a Mxploration of the Isthmus of Darten, OUB NAVAL COBBEHPONDENCE. Onarep rare Sarr Decatur, PanaMa, May 16, 1667 Doctor Valdweil's Journey— Why he se out—Previous Ad- wontures— Latest Pip from Panama—Entervng the Wil- derness— The Hiver Koute—Scenes on the Way—Approach fo ihe Ataniio— Return of the Doctor—Llis Hopes of Fu fnere Success, Wo my previous communicatéon brief allusion was made to the success of Dr Caldwell in his expedition w discover the practicability of an inter-cecanic canal across the Isth- mes of Darieo. In this letter I propose w give in doiall the facts copuected with the oxpediti rs. ‘¥be Doctor for some time had been collecting facts from Qatives and foreigners resident bere, which had led him to the conviction that the opinion of she impranticability of such @ route had been arrived at too hastily, To Mr, An drew Hogach, a Scetohman by birth, residing at Chepiga Pa, @ village in the Gulf of San Miguel, the Dostor express ed himself under the highest obiigations for auch informa- tton as fically induced him to set on foot the expedition Mr. Hossch has resided a number of years at Uhepigana, and bas witnossod the consecutive expeditions of Cul en, Prevost, Lieut. Strain and others without at all losing bis eontdence in the feasibility of the plan, despite the ili suo ewe of previous explorers. Quillen, he says, aw nothing beyond the Guif of San Miguel, not having penetrated & tile beyond rhe coast; all the statements #bith he pub thew being received from the natives, though Cullen pre umes to furcish a faithful detail of his own journeyings eerese the Isthmus. Near the end of March last, Dr. Caldwell having obtain- e¢ of Commodore Mervin leeave of absence for three weeds, avd # seaman named Parker as his aid, proceedod from Panama to Chepigana. This is @ small piace mtuated eo the Ubvcunaque river, and has a@ latitade of near 80 deg. 10 min. north, long. 78 deg 18min. weet. Into the of San Miguel flow a number of small streams, among the principal of which may bw mentioned the Savauna and (hecunuque, which unite ina larger river ee Darien) viour 10 their discharging into the Gulf. riversara Eye only 80 far as they are swelled by the periodical in tex of the Pacific tides. Torough the agency of Mr. Hoeach the Doctor procured from Senor Juan Refolio, the Rejidor, with the oo opera- ‘Bon of Sr. Borbua, Alcalde of tue distrigt, a negro and two Inaiaus to act as guides and ipierpreters, With these aid« the Foctor started from Chepigana on the 6th ot Avril, and eoeind to Fuerte del Principe, an old avandoned for ess on the ‘eft bank of the Savanna rivet Gp ibe 7th he etarted from the opposite bank, accompa, Sted by bix guider, boldly pusbing bis way into the wil ‘hich had proved so disastrous to the partiea of id Lieut. Strain; but bis piaa was ailferent trom the jatter’s. Inthe first place, he rtarted witn amuc) som are to have seri usiy interfered with its movements, because it soon became involved in a wavt of provisions, eo evil which was irremediable in a wilderness country, Agaiu, Lieut. Strain committed a great error ix following the course of the rivers which he met, supposing they ¥rald copdyet him to the opporite side of the Ixthmus. Tee Chucupaque river along which he wandered for a @reat distance pursues a long meandering course, far to tho southward of a direct line from Caledonia Bay, the point of deparvure on the Auantic side, to San Miguel Guif, the og) of bis destination on the Pacific. This lawer difficulty Doctor avoided by uring the someene as his guide, ‘eeripg bis route northerly and easteriy. afer leaving the Savanna river at a point opposite Fuerte del Principe, the Doctor wae compelled to cat his pathway, mop by ste, throvga the path!ess mazes of the forest, by the aid of tae machete, a sort of Spaniso band axe. Ow the fires day after leaving ‘Principe he found an cle- vation of the country. which be reckoned to be some 170 or 180 fect high, apd this was tho highest laud which he met with upon the route. after the first day he met no river of running water, though he crossed numerous rocky guiches aud ravines, which probavly had been filled with water during the rainy season. The region which he tra versed appeared to be @ prolonged plain, in which, for the ‘Ant four daye, they now and then met marshes or pools of tmauddy water; but on the fifth the rame plain contioued, Aboo; ith the greatest difficulty the party couid Gnd eno. gh water to quench their thirst ‘On this day numerous shots of froarms were heard in the woods aronod them, though they raw no human being whutover; vut his guides became greatly alarmed, feariug they would be cutoff by an enemy, and also, suMfering woeh for the want of water, deserted bim But the Doc- for, with that genuine American resolution whish no ordi Bary dung: rs and obstacles can deter from its purpose, was still determined not to abandon his undertaking until be had accomplished its object They thea climped a tree tome eiguty or one Lundred feet in height, from which, through an opeting in the coast range. the Atlantic was seen bearing about forty (40) degrees ewt of north. This event gave a fresh impuise to the Dootor in his undertak- fog, and though in apparently @ hostile countay, and suiter. tog greatly from the scarcity of water, his provisions being almest exbansted, with no one but the seaman Parker, sill be determined to proceed onward, and like Bal doa, renowned for bis discovery of the “ Great South Sea,’ wake vo halt uni he had arrived at the Ultima Thule of bis expedition, avd, like the old warrior, batho hia ebield tw the Atiantic: So he travelled one day more, when the 1 In which his course had led was seen extending un- ruptedty towards the gap in the coast range, through which the Atiaptic bad been seen the day previousiy. On whis day numerous reports of frearms were heard in the ricinity, though no person was geen. But on this day Whey found po water whatever, and their stock of vi tions was reduced to almost nothinz—a pound and a half of sologpa +aurage and a few bits of biscuit. So much to be regretted, although in my opinion, in powise detracti from the success of the expeditic n, the Doctor was compe! ed w retrace his steps, when seeming!y within Ove miles of the Atlantic. He found vo large forests on the route, no human hat tations of any kind afer leaving Principe, Dor # single ba- man being, though frequently b of wild beasts during the night; yet thoy never attacked him. ie saw nothing remarkabie in the geological forma- ‘ton of the region through which be parsed, pone of the seorta, evidence of volcanic influence briny A meton the fethmos, no large baealtic ledges #o common further north. The gulches an: wines were irregalar in their direction, seeming to pour out their waters ja the rainy sea’on noon the plain which he traversed. The Doctor is entirely con- ident after bis observations that the route is a practicable @me for the contruction of an iater oceanic canal. ‘On the 10th , he returned to the nt on the Pacific de, whence be dey ». where he meta most cor- dial from his friend, Mr. Hosach. He thinks the advance een the two oveanr, by the route which he parseed will not exceed thirty miles. ‘The foctor {# quite a tion at Panama since his return Bome of the iment cldzens proposed raising $5,000, ‘and to put a b at with several men at his dispusal to pro- seed down to Chepigana, for the purpose of completing Bis explorations. it he declived ali such is; has made out a report of the expedition, which he will p oba- bly forward by the preseot mail to the Secretary of the Navy, allowing him to make such disposition of it as ho think proper, to the Doctor to any that the expedition was eon. solely at bia own expen ts duetod News from Venezuela, OUR CARACAS COR 4£SPONDENCE. Won, from the fact that here the firat sad honora were paid to the remains of the illustrioas dead. The ship was pamed on the day of the funeral celebration in Philadel, phia, and ber first voyage is made W visit the people who extended their hospitality 1@ the moble and gifted son of tbat city. Jewert, the master of the bark, speaks in high terms of commendation of his vessel, and wita the prestige of a good pame her path upon the waters must be preh the sb-ea of good fortune. Another coincidence by casnalty, the vessel comes consigned tothe house in wich is aseociated the marshal of that day most remarkable in Cuba, which ratlied a brotherhood of mourners round the bier of the American—S aniards and “strangers of the North” mingling their sorrows over the world’s lost. ‘A lot of negroes seized on the sonth sido, sixty ia num- ber, arrived at Batabanao last evening. They were taken (pn the vicinity of Sancti Spiritus by order ef General Oon- cha, under + xamination of an oidor of the royal audieacia. ‘Th+y will be here this evening or to-morrow. Havana, May 29, 1857, Gen. Walker at Havana—G@en. Sania Anna and Marico— The Yéllow Fever, do. We have been vastly amused at ihe statement made by one of our daily papers here respecting Walker, After dercribing bia personal appearance with tolerable accu- racy, this print goes on to say that he left Nicaragna to eave his neck, and adds that be was on shere in this city and bap gly Peri the Moro Castle, the Cabanas and Punta fort. is is not the truth. Gen. Walker was pot on shore here, but simply passed from the Granada to the Empire City to proceed to New Orleans, Yhere is in thie city a letter from the ex-Dictator of Mexico, Santa Anna, in which he expresses his belief that be will be recalled to Mexico, and that he will return to that country to again assume the supreme power. Ono of santa ADna’s adherents, now here, infermed me the other day thet, to his knowledge, twenty thousand stand of arms ha been very recently shipped to Mexico by the frienda of the ex-Dictator, from the United States, St. Thomas and from this island. Three of the crow of the British bark Mary, which vos- se] you will remember arrived from St. Thomas havit yellow fever among her crow, have died in the hospi'a of ubat dread disease. Captain Nickles, of the bark David Nickles, of Searsport, bas also had an attack of it, but is now, 1 have pleasure in stating, considered convalescent. There has also been another case of yellow fever on board vome other vessel in this harbor, @ carly attacks are rarely of @ very revere type, and from the advanced stato of the season we indulge hope that the disease will not prevail to as great an extentas it did last year. ‘The American shipmasters bere subscribed together and purchased twenty four quarter tickets and eight half tick- eta—all different numbers—in the drawing of the lottery on the 27th inst. The “fickle goddess” did not, however, favor them; their tickets all proved blanks. |The tcket 17,684 drew the $100,000 prize, and was sold in this city. Those rensitive things, “the stocks,” have been thrown ito a terrible “flutter” by the iast intelligence received from in. Various stocks fell very considerably tna brief period, and I believe have scarcely as yet recovered their previous position. ¢ French brig of war Duquedie sailed on the 26th inet., apd the English cruiser Arab, for England, on the 25th. On the 28th the English war screw corvette Cossack, of twen- ty guns and 250 horse power, commanded by James H. Cockburn, came into this harbor from Jamaica. When tbe saluted, the Spaniards rushed down to the wharf in numbers, winking it was the fieet from Spain that had ar- rived with the troops. The impression appears still to prevail that the six thoueand soldiers, including a regiment of Lancers, will go hence to Mexico. ‘The “licenciados’’—retired soldiers, who had received licenges to return to Spain—about one thousand in number, bave bad their licenses taken away from them, and they have been compelled to again enter the army. { heard on Sunday last that some of them had even embarked for Spain, but were compelled to come on shore again. Is it reasonable to suppose that men thus compelled to serve a second time io the army, contrary to their previous ex- pectations and against their will, will prove either |»yal or efticient soldiers, should the hour of danger arrive? A Frenchman lost bia barn, and fences have heen destroyed. ‘The wind on Monday was very violent, filling the air with dust, and rendering 1t exceedingly unpleasant 10 be out, Atuightfall the wind subsided, and the air wa: full of smoke, indic ting the presence of large fires in that fi lime dae doubt, io the woods, and on failow jand. Since writing the above we hear of further and serions ravages by fire, in various parts of our country and else- where in our vicinity Ou the pire pla’ns, at the'north, the house of the French- man, whose barn was destroyed, was cousilerably in- ed by the fire. Several cords of wood have been burned up, and the fire hax completely swept over a torrt be of some three or four miles in length, and varying in width from afew rods to two miles; burning everything combustiblé in in its couree and doing great damage, par- ticularly te the fences Tn Bellmont we hear ofa house and barn burned, but we have pot the name of the owner. The fire was run- ning in the woods, destroying much standing timber and the fences. In Burke the fences and forests have been pretty badly burned, but we do not hear of the destruction of any buil ings, except one barn f Chateaugay the fire hae also done much damage to forests and texces, John Roberts joses a large quautity of wood, and bad a fine sugar bush destroyed, aad much other standing timber, together with cousiderable fencing Others have ulso suffered in the same way. At the Summit, in Clinton county, the fire was raging in the woods, and s0 pear the railroad track as to vet the Lex on fire, and the passuge of the trains on the rosd was in terrupted aficr the early morning trains, so that none parsed until near maidnighs on Monday. Tn Wertville the fire has been severe. The large barns and ehecs of Darius Hardy have been destroyed, and he has enifered other injuries 'n the jozs of fences. Marshall Hoadley and J. P. Hoadley lost their dwellings, outhuild- ings and farm fences. The fire was so intense that they were actually obliged to bury their c'othing in the sand to gave it. We hear of other losses in the neighborhood, but have not the uames. In Moria we hear of the destruction of a house and barn, but have not learned the name of the owner. In Brandon t.e fires bad been raging, and we heard a rumor that a honge and barn bad been destroyed, which lacks covfirmstion At Bra-her Iron Works, in St. Lawrence county, we learn that the extensive iron works of Alexander Skinner were entirely destroyed, as were also many houses ani other buildings in the neighborhood, In the destruction which has thus euddenly swept over large portions of the country, much serioas damage has Deen sustained, mostly by our farmers, Large quantities of grain of all Kinde, potatoes and other provisions, have been destroyed, aud many upoo whom the logs falls are ily able to bear it. Last year one of the worst ant most fearful tornatocs ever knowr ip this region left a track of desolation through nearly one-half the width of our county. Thie ear the fire has taken a wider range, and urged by abigh incessant wind its ravages have been without control by human agency, and the destruction of property must be very great.
