‘The Brorsen Comet. i Us rethor olaguiar, considering the pumber of Observa- ‘Cories Weare in this country, that so little atention has ‘Deen paid by any of them to the subject of the comets of ‘whort period which have recently visited us; and of the ‘onc particularly of long period, yet looked for, with ‘inety degrees of tail. This last, whether it strikes the Garth’or not, would create a desolating hurricane even if only passed near us. Tho wind of @ cannon ball bas deen known to kill aman. What would be the effect of a ale biowirg at the rate of 1,300,000 miles an hour, or @ighty times faster than # telegraph message {s transmit- ted, (for that was the speed of the comet of 1843,) we ‘Feave to be determined by that class of calculators who ‘Pave furnished the French and American prees with pro- ‘found eetimates of the airy nothingness of these wander- ‘tng orbs. It is certainly remarkable that in all the speca- ‘tations which have been published as yet, with but two ‘exceptions—one a leating journal in Paris and another tn ‘Wow York—the fact that wind in motion is a destructive @gent, has been wholly left out of viow. It is proved that @ comet is witaout sensible density. So is air in its ordi. ‘mary form and in its daily action upon us when not in mo- Gon, But it is avery daugerous article when it sweeps @long at the rate of one hundred miles an hour, and when it acts upon a vacuum it is with a power strong enough to ‘Uf mountains. The comet of which we are now speaking is rapidly de- Parting from our system, which it visits once in five anda ‘balf years, and it can yet be seen through an ordinary tow power telescope, as we shall presently explain. It waa discovered by # Dasish astronomer of the name of Brorsen, at Kiel, in 1646. It bad a roundish nebulosity ‘without any indipation of either nucleus or tail. It was discovered in the constellation Pisces on the 26th of Febru- ‘ary of that year. The observations were not as numerous -aa desirable, but from such calculations as could be made ‘fey the ablost astronomers at the time. Its noxt arrival at peribolion was fixed as probable in September or Novem- ‘er 1851. But though anxiously nought for it was not then found. This circumstance induced the bollef that its period “Bad been incorrectly calculated. Tho elements of the elliptic curve were then substituted for those of the para- *bola, and they were ascortained to agree with the path in Qhe heavens which this comet bad described. Its period ‘was then corrected to ten years, and the astronomers who looked for it accordingly, detec‘ed it in its right place or » Dearly eo on the 18th of March last in or near Aries. It ‘was also seen at the Harvard Observatory. There was ~ Great anxiety felt to determine the remarkable form of this ‘Comét’s orbit, which was affected by a near approach to Jupiter, and it is now gratified. Its dimensions are well ~@scertained. Its aphelion is, according to C. W. Tuttle, of ‘Newburyport, beyond the orbit of Jupiter more than 36,000,000 miles. At ite perihelion is was just within the orbit of Venus. Its geocentric motion is mostly in right ascension, (its distance on the celestial equator in an ~ @asterly direction from the meridian passing through the ‘vernal equinox), being about fifteen minutes daily from ‘Weat to cast. Oa the 8th inst. it was nearest the earth, or twenty mi!- Hons of miles distant, though invisible to the naked eye, and Fapidly receding. But these persons who have a telescope— - one of a low power willdo very well—may be able to Bee it before it disappears. It is now in tho constellation OC the Great Bear, (Ursa Major.) It was about twelve days since seen midway between Omicron and Pi, two of the eighty-seven stars belonging to this constellation, and which, with other stars, as our readors well know, take their names from the Greek alphabet. When their num- Der exceeds that of the letters of this alphabet theu the Roman alphabet is used, and when this is exhausted aum- « bers are resorted to, Finally, our readers, by keeping a sharp look out this (Saturday) evening, and directing their glasses towards tho star Bots, in the Great Bear, or to the lowest of the two Pointers, will find the Brorsen comet within the field ofan Ordinary sized object glass and easily observable.
