Weovepar, May 20—6 P. MM. ‘There was quite an exciting time at the stock exchange ‘this morning. The movement in Michigan Southern and Cleveland and Toledo was the feature of tho day among speculators. This being the day for closing the book for subseription to tho ten per cent guarantied stock of the Michigan Southern Railroad Company, there was consider- able activity in the old stock and large lots called in, The three million subscription is more than filled. It is re Ported that subscripLons amounting to newly six millions of dollara have been made, and that it will take some little time to make the proper distribution of new stock. Erio ‘was not operated in very largely to-day, bat prices at the board were pretty well sustained. Cleveland and Teledo sold down to 65 per cent cash, but closed quite steady. In Reading there was an active businoss, without much change tn prices. Tlitnols Central was a little better for cash but sales on time, selier’s option, show a great difference in prices. It sold as low as 137; per cent, seller 60 days, At tho board the changes in market value, compared with yes- terday, were as follows:—Cloveland and Toledo fell off 1X per cent; Erie, 24; Reading, 14; Michigan Southern, 2 New York Central advanced ‘ per cent. Michigan Soath- ern opened this morning at 65}¢, cash, and sold down to 6434 per cont. Tho sales to.lay carried the privilege, and ‘at gave a great impetus to tho market. At the second board there was a very blue market Michigan Southern sold, privilege off, at 67 per ceat cash, ‘and it looks as though a good deal of old stock out of the street was coming in mt that price. Cleveland and Toledo closed weak at 63 a G3}g. The recent attempt at a corner was an utter failure, and the parties engaged must bave sold out at a serious sacritice. The cash salon of tbls stock this aflernvon were quite large, and we have ‘a suspicion that the most of it was on account of partis not very remotely connected with the management. Such, ‘at all events, was the general impression im the street, Erie looked very blue this afternoon. It sold down to ST per cent cash, Now York Central foll of with the rest, and closed heavy. Tho Michigan Southera movement bar fairly culminated. The guarantied of proferred stook has been taken, ‘The company has #0 far carried out its new programme, and we new propose to show its fatare pro- grees and ultimate result. The books closed onthe sub- scription this afternoon, and the ball i# now open for the entertainment of tho old stockholders. It will close amidst gloom, darkness and despair. ‘The ten per cent guarantied preferred stock of the Michi- gan Southern Railrosd Compauy was offered at the close this afternoon at 88 percent, Sales were made at 8854 0 £9 per cent, This stock will be on the market in e few days, when its real morite will bo more generally dis- cursed, The company have now its policy fulty defined, and the pablic can arrive at results much more clearly ‘and conchuwively than when the secret systom of dnaa- cioring was pursued. It will not be our fault if the subject is vot thoroughly analyzed so that all classes of ptookbold. | ers will know jest where they stand, It is our impression | that holders of the old stock will be jast nowhere. Thove who have leavened their old with a litte of the guarantiod may do better if they realive at an early day, but at the Dest it strikes ws that this is the last kick of the galvanized | corpee. The opinion 1s gaining ground daily that the old Nicara- gua Trait route is soon to be re-established by Commo- dore Vanderbilt, bo being determined to redeem bis Pleriges to the rtockholders of that company and to the pub- Ite, On the occasion of the late election for directors of the company for the ensuing year, some 00,000 shares of ftock were voted epon for the ticket prepared by Mr. | the | Vanderbili—a high compliment from the ciockhoiders to | the man who bas labored so industriovsly to preserve this | property in the midst of so many dillicnities, Afver the | election was over some of the new directors had an inter- viow with Mr. Vanderbilt, and recetved from hima con- | firmation of bis published declarations, He aswured them Of his design to re-cetablish tho company and save the | property of the stockholders, Hie expressed a confident belief that everything would work ont in the most satis- fhetory way, and advised that noone abould part with a | abare of stock. It is now understood that the government ‘will pond @ minister «peedily to Contral Amorica with full instructions to obtain for the ownors of the existing or say | future Transit route all that is necessary for perfect seca. | rity, The Nicaragua Transit Company will thus be soarded agninst tho possibility of any ropotition of its late troubles. ‘The Assistant Treasurer reports to-day ae follows — Brokers’ Board to-day aa follows — Bought—100 Erie Railroad Hold —209 Michigan Southcen Waitrond 65 q—reg. 100 Chicago and Rock ree.
