Hie nyy—"It ix useless to speculate with refo- rence t tb» probable consequences of a collision, which there is scarcely one chance in millions can ever’ occur. Science hae as yet discovered no guarantee for any planct against the prodable shock of a comet; but an examination of the adjustments of our system and those of Jupiter and Saturn would seem to indicate (0 us, that in all past time no dorangement has over occurred from such a cause.” We ‘Will distuiss this subject by giving Professor Argo's di- Vision of comets. Ho divides dhem inte three clases with reference io their physical constitullon. He thinks they ‘oceasionally appear round and with weil defined planctary discs, showing them to be solid opaque bodies, in all respecis “resembling planets, and only differing from thom in the great coceutircity of their orbit. A feoond Class of comets comy ds those in which there is A nuclous, but devoid of opacity, permitting the light to Wate through even that portion which may probably 0 solid. third class, and Uast by far the most ou- inerous, comprehends those comets destitute entirely of ‘any solid nucieus, consisting of matter so allenuated as to compare with nothing of which we bave any know- edge on the Farth’s surface. The comots named Kncke aad Boila appear 0 belong to Uais class, and even Halley’s: | comet, according to the opinion of Sir Job Herschel at its dnst roturn, wppeared to beioug to this class also. (From the Liverpool Journal, April 4. We have been favored by the Committee of the Turkish Missions with some extracts from & letter just received from their correspondent at Constantinople, deveribi several ogses Of religions perveoution whtolt hve occurred in the Sultan's dominions. We are not responsible for the accuracy of these statements :— A troop of government soldiers, sent to collect taxes on the berders of Kurdistan, under the Pacha ef Mosul, had fallen upon a Protestant village, polluted the church, broken open and robbed the houses, and ravished the women, one of whom was killed. After much compisint to the authorities, a commission of inquiry was appointed, by order of the imperial government. It consisted of four persons, who investigated the case and reported; but the Pacha had substituted a report of his own, with false signatures; and so the man who led the troop of soldiors hus been appointed governor of the district in which the outrage occurred, and the poor villagers are expecting his vengeance. Another case of persecution haa occurred at Sivas large town in Asia Minor, where an American missionary, pened & shop for the sale of medicine attending himself to prescribe to the sick. On # late occasion, while a feast of the Armenian church was beivg held, inapy persons of all classed re- sorted to this shop, when, in the inidst of the discusion between the native Protestants and some Mnssulmans who wished to know whether the Scriptures authorized idol worship, & non-commissioned officer entered the shop, and with curses and swearing ordered the native Prowstants to leave the shop and Wo cease talking. This they refused to doat his bidding, and he then seized one of them, thrust him into the street, and beat him cruelly, The injured man laid his complaint before the commanding officer of the military, who treated him with insult. He then went to the civil authorities and appealed to them for redress, ‘Dut was told that they had no jurisdiction over the milita- ry. However, they at last agreed to investigate the case; oa reflection, he did net think he was hkely to obtain from such a tribunal, as his own witnesses were all and those of his opponenta Muswulmans, and he oe bo cavt into privon on» false charge of blaspheaning Another case of oppression has taken place at Rodesto, about eighty miles from Constant The Protestants here Met ina room fitted up as a chapel, and had used a bar of steel struck by a hammer to give notice of the time of assembling. A mob of women assaulted the chapel one Sabbath, with clubs and axew, and the authori. ties bad sided with them, the vartabed declaring that at ull hazards be would not leave a Protestant in the place. There was s Protestant who bad married an ‘l with the consent of her mother, betrothed for a month before lance and most to assist the Turkish government to carry out religious to- leration, The central government is very weak, and un. able to enforce its commands in the provinces. ‘The difficulty is to obtain evidence upon which the gov- ernment can act, since it general that the local authorities are more or lest involved in these outrages, and therefore one sided reporty are sent w the central government. When we heard of the great preparations that were Deing made for deliber ‘on the poiut of the covoeption at Rome in December, 1854, we found, and with good rea- ‘fon, that these preparations would all be found to have been litte more than an outward form; but we nevertheles} hoped that the prayers of many good mea, so earnestly solicited by the Holy Father, for te light of the Holy Spirit, would be so beard a4 to tn turning the counsels of Ahitophel into foolishness. The unsearchable judgments of Divine Providence have other- wise ordered. Pius, alas’ the weak Pius, baving once thrown himself into the arms of the Jesuits, has now again lent his name and bis intiuence to accomplish a deed deeply grieving ail good men, and causing new scandal in the church. The ency al letter of the Sth of December, 1854, threatens the wrath of Almighty God, &e., to all who should dare to speak aginst, or even not to accept, the decision therein announced ‘respecting the conception of the Virgin How arent soever may be our respect for his Holiness as head of the che ond the ntve of Catholic unity, we should dread still mo easure of the Almighty if we blindly accepted each decision. St. Paul did not threaten the people of Berea with the displeasure of Almighty God when Uwy searched the the things which were brought before and St. Luke even confers upon them “| ‘These were tore noble than those of Thesealonica,”’ becanse they did so scarch. If this doe- trine of the immaculate conception can be so thoroughly proved to be a doctrine of the Catholic Church as in suc apostolic letter itis declared to be, there need no fowr arise from such search; yea, rather ought an appenl o go forth inviting «uch a search, that tt may be patent to the whole world (hat we are indebted to the care aud geal of Pins IX. for this discovery.
