M. ‘The stook market opened this morning with a down- ward tendency. A very small amount of business was iransacted, and nothing but the efforts of large hclders kept prices from touching lower points. At th. frst board Canton Company declined 3¢ per cert; Michigan Southern, 36; Galena and Chicago, >;. Cieveland aud Toledo advaco- ed 34 per cout; La Crosse and Milweukie, 13. Tae princl- pal operations in Michigan Southern to day were ev! dently by parties realizing. The sales on time at buyer's option were without doubt for speculation, or mede by the company’s brokers to sustain the market. The bull organs are perfectly horrified at our temerity in ex posing the stock issues of the Michigan Socthern Rallroad Oom- pany. Such an outrage deserves the severest censure, according to the ideas of the Times speculators. The pres have no right, according to their code, to make such things public, as they are calculated to depress the market value of the stock and alarm outside stockholders 11 is urged ‘bat any railroad company detected im such an act is deeply wronged by exposure, and that the sole objes! is to depreas the current price of the stock for the benefit of afew short speculators. These organs can see no other motive for giving the public important facts re- qurding great public interests, Their vision is confined emtirely to the limits of Wall street, and anything said in favor of or against any stock security cannot, by any pos- sibiiity, be for any other than a private purpose. Such je their polley and suck their practice, We shail not ake any effort to convince them to the contrary, or be ‘nm the least influenced in our course by any construction put upon our motives. The community at large are with us, and have already realized the correcimess of our lows. In every instance where it hasbeen made manifest hats sytem of management has bees pursued caicu- lated to iojure the stockholders’ interests, we have bees ‘he firstto maze it public, and caution all concerned, Amidst the maay incorporated companies which have ocme upon this market, !t has been at times difficult to select the good from the bed. A little chaff has got in among the wheat, in spite of all the efforts to separate them, and much injury has been produced. The mining mania which swepi over this continent in 1852 and 1863, wea probably for the time equal to anything of the kind ever known. Im 1843 and 1844 Lake Superior was the scene of great excitement in copper mining, aad the whole commanity was more or lens sSected. Im 1847 end 1648 the Califor nia gold fever raged intensely, and the whole world wad seized with It. The Late Superior copper mining mania resulted im a collapse, Only about two or three of the many companies started survived, and they struggles siong for years before proving productive. The Oallfor- nin gtd movement was more of « reality. The great gold product of these mines inflamed the public mind to auch an extent that those who could not depart for the Fl Dorado of the day, turned their attention to the mine- ral resources of their tmmediate locality. The services of geologists, aseayista, surveyors and mining ongineers were put im requisition, and their reports created the most intense exctiement. Some of the mow aietinguish- ed cbewsists and scientific men of the day found fall em. ployment in examining mineral lande. Specimens of gold, silver, copper, lend, coal and other ores were cx: ffbited, and the eyes of capitalists feasted with the gitt- tering evidences of untold wealth. Ii wae shows that at oar very doors we had mines equal in richness and valve to any ever beard of ia any oiber part of int world. Many of our most shrewd, cool Beaded, cavtiour and eal- culating capitalists were attracted by the realities present. 04, and entered with ihe greatest entbusiagm into the most prominent and promising projects of the day. Capital was freely invested, afier the most thorongh im vestigation. All the senecs were brought to bear D tenting the evidences exhibied, and sil were equally eeteled. The collapse of the mining bubble turned the attention of capitalists ‘and speculators more teraiiroads, and since 1868 tnere has been nothing else of any magaitade upon the warket ‘Within the past three or four years the railroad interost of the United states has much more than doubled, 1t bas been pushed forward as wildly and as biincly as any mining project of 1853, and about upon as poor » basis 1s is, however, #0 much more identified with tho other great interests of the country that a more gradual decay ‘will be realized. Oar railroads are necessary for the de- velopement of our internal resources, and will always bo more or leas sustained by tae active individual industry of the different seotioos, but not under the present systems of management oan = they Decome or continue productive. Tne leading railroad companies of the Western States are now passing through the same phases that led the raiiroais of the Fastern States into insolvency and bankruptcy. What ‘was a gradual movement in New England will be more rapid tn Obio and Indiana. The New Evgiand railroad companies never pursued such a reckless course of finan: clering as those of the Western States. They mever wero detected in private issues of new stock at the rate of fivo thousaad shares at atime, and they negotiated loans at less ruinous rates; notwithstanding which most of them ere at this momers unproductive, and are likely to cou- tinue so. The poor stockholders and tho lower class of bondholders in ali these railroad companies are the vio tims. The managers contrive to take care of themselves. ‘The first class bondholders are partially secured, and finally get porsession of the road when ft {s all worm ou, and rum down by bad management. ft is sur prising thet the stockholders do uot realize the dangers of their position at an earlier day. It is the most difficull thing im the world to peat into their beads the fac} that sooner or later the creditors of the different railroads will absorb the catire property. After driving at this point for the past five years or more, we baye at Jast aroused the community to s sense of danger, and they are now making every sacrifice to get clear of railroad stecks. If any one wants to hold this class of securities at present prices let the brokers and speculators of Wall street take them. They have done as muchas any other classto depreciate them, aad there let them rest. If the outside public want them five years hence, taey will find them floating about Wall street at prices ranging at about one half or ome.quarter current rates, The mining bubbies bed their day and collapsed The railroad bubbies wil! soon follow suit. ‘The Parker Vein paid part of tts debt by new issues of stock, and the Michigan Southern Ratiroad Company are doing the same thing, What was right aad proper in the Parker Vein must be the same im the Michigan Southern Ratlroad. Cleveland and Toledo closed at 725 per cent cash, but most of the sales were at seller's option. This firmness can be attribute’, we suppose, to the pros. pect of & cash dividend some time this mouth. This divi- dend will without doubt be made, and, as we bave bofore remarked, will be made from the proceeds of stock recently sola at the board, to the extent of four thousand shares, as it will take \bat quantity of pew stook to provide the required sum, say $140,000. By this operation 4,000 abares will be added to the captial stock. How muoh botter would be, if such anew issue of stock must be made, to apply the proceeds to the payment of a portion of the floating debt, which has for some time past been very unwieldy and troublesome, snd carried at acost oftwe and three per cent a month. Dividends must, how. ever, be paid, we suppose, at amy snorifice; for so long as they are yaid, the imeide managers imagine—and geno rally we are sorry to say too traly—that the stockholders are éelnded into s belie’ of the pretended merit of the securities they bold. ‘The stook traneactions of the Times consers in Wall street, to-day, were as follows — ‘Bought. 200 Michigan Southern RR. 73);—buyer 60 days. ‘The great efforts made by the Times this morning 10 cover up the stock issues of the Michigan Seuthera Oo, wore in accordance with the interests of that concern is the street.
