These worthies, tt appeared, ia Anderson, (\lso colored,) proprietress of » boarding establishment situated at No. 18 Baxter street, and, as one might naturally suppose, were not on the best terms. What made the matter most exciting was the inability of Victoria to make a choice. George bad a lovely voice, and could play the banjo exquisitely, while om the other hand, Mr. Davis’ noble figure, chivalroas spirit and tery temper jo a deep impression upon the heart of the sable damsel. Atlact a plan was to effect a choice, and it was this:—The riva's were to meet at ‘Vic. \oria’s mansion and there enter Into a deadiy encounter; was to be rewarded with the coveted prize of te young Iady’s hand, while the defeated party waa to hat his forever ‘afier. 0- cording to arracgemeums, the rivals appeared at the abode oe beloved Victoria, cach ooutideat of suo- cous an Eager for the fray. ‘The ordimary rules 0: duviling wore enti igeored; even, seconds were not allowed tho felictty of jotaing ia the affair of Donor, In a crowded room, of rather limved dim nalcns, the two colered gentle nen proposed to settic pistol shots, Tne auel- their positions ard were about to biase at one wren @ frieud of the belligerents named Jacob tered the b: cas¥of Si not Capgerous wound. that be bad wounded Stewart, ne took to his heels ia the ly mani ‘without biddiog Miss Victo ria adieu, he scam down Baxter street, and was noon lost to view. Whether Jefferson Davis, im bir chivalrous tone of spiri', will return to Gotham and cffer his objectors to the performance of the bridal ceremony, or whotner he will tacitly suomit to his de- feat, and weep in secret over the loss of bis most ardent love, yet remains to be seen. Arson Case in Front Street, ABRES? OF THE SUSPECTED INCENDIARY. Tt will be recollected thaton Sunday laste daring at- tempt was made to burn the premises Nos, 272 and 274 Front street, occupied by Mr. William F, Boars, whole- sale wine aad liquor dealer. Three piaces im the bulld- tog were fired, another prepared with two large sugar casks, the hoops cut asunder—one placed on the top of the other, forming a kind of chimney to extend the flames to the upper floor, and im the under cesk a lot of cooper’s shavings were deposited. The Fire Marshal and Captain Ditebets have been diligently proseouting inquiries since the fire, in order to ferret out the offender. There was a very active movement in Erie Ratieoad stock to-day, It opened at 66% and closed at 66)¢ per cent, The operations of certain leading houses in this stock are watched with = grést deal of interest. The falling off in receipts during the present fiscal year have been s0 large that it is feared some important changes will be necessary in the financial programme. In other prominent railroad stocks there was nothing new. New ‘York Central Railroad advanced 3 per cent; Roading, 3; Miohigan Southern, X ; Cleveland and Toledo, < ; Chica go and Rook Island, %*; Oumberiaad, %¢ ; Virginia 6's declined 1; per cent. ; [Uinols Central Railroad, 114 ; Cleve- lend and Pittebarg, <; Milwaunie an‘ Mississippt, 1. Ga Jena and Chicago was boavy without reslizing an sotual devine. Michigan Southern and Cleveland and Toledo were comparatively quiet this morsing. It will be some time before either of these stocks bold again a very prom!- vent position im this market. New things—young, fresh, ‘vigorous, ani not tainted with the odlum of fancy finan- cieripg—will attract public attention, to the exclusion of the old used-up corporations. The new Western Raliroad stocks, besed upon the Congressional land grants, have more attraction for capitalists, and we have no doubt large sums will be drawn out of the most in/iated class of securities and placed in the most tmportant lines about being developed im Wisconsin and lows. There is a feol- tug of safety and security in this cless of investments, which does not exist in the old lines, where the cost has already been enormous, and nothing to show for tt but a worn out track and decayed equipment. The land grant railroads in Wisconsia and lowa commence under the most favorable auspices, They begin with all the pre- sent experience of the established lines. They begin where the others have left off, and can therefore iake ad ‘vantage of ail the improvements for constructing cheap and desirable tracks, bridges, depots, &c. At the second board there was a very unsettied mar- ket. The genera) tev¢ency of prices was apward, but there wore some exceptions. Chicago and Rock Island, advanoed 1 \ per cent, and very little stock offered atthe advance. The April dividend of this company, will be ‘at leant 6 per cent cash. Six per cent has boen talked of, but it will probably be five, La Crosse and Milwaukio advanced } per cemt. The report of this com pany, just feaued, sbows It to be one of the most productive lines in the Western stater. Erie was \ better this afternoon; Cleveland and Toledo, 34. Milwaukie and Missiesipp! lvail- roed fell off 1% per cent; Michigan Southern, }/; Reading 4g. There were report in the street to-day that Mr. Mo- Callum, the general superintendent of the Eric i:aliroad, bad resigned. If there is cay truth in the rumor, the directors of that company may wake up their minds 0 open the Cometruction account at once. Under a less careful, leas economical mazagemont the roed will not earn tbe contributions to the sinking fund, and we de not believe that will be done this year ander the most fa- vorable circumstances from this Ume out The resigna- om of Mr. MoCsitum will at ones ebandon the road to the tender mercies of « set of cormorants, who have op- posed Bim from the startin bis reforms. We trust, for the interest ef the stookhoidera, thet there is no founde- tion for the report. ‘We learn from Washington thet the "resident has signed the new coinage Dill, and that t ic new a iaw. By this aot the eficers of the Mint are to reosive the fractions arta of the Spanish dolar, quarters, cightns and six teenth, at par for two years, in exchange for the now cent, which the Mint will cotm as rapidly as possible.
