The whole is'and sems to be involved ina general ‘whirlwind of speculstion and financial expansion, which ‘contains abundant germs of a disastrous commercia; erisis ‘atmo iuture day. At present, however, every- thing seems to be going on with the most wonderful Prosperity. The career of speculation meets with no check, and banks and associations of all kinds for specu lattve purposes are brought forward with a rapidity that can only be looked upon as a padlic mania. Branch banks are proposed in Matanzas, Cardenas, ‘Ville Clara, 3t. Jago and many ether places. Asan evi dence of the tone of the public mind we find that lists ‘Were opened at Havana and Matanzas for subsoriptioas to a bank in the latter place, with a capital of $600,000. ‘The lists remained open but a short time, and wheo closed the subsoripiions at Havana amounted to $470,000, and in Matanzas to $845,600. Gas companies are proposed also to light half a dozen small towns in the country, and railroads are to be oon structed im all direotions. This furor will no doubt reach ‘a hit, and sball have to chronicle a great revulsion of all this flctitious prosperity. Among the schemes is one for @ grand credit mobilier, with a capital of four millions of dollars. It was found that the Captain General deemed his powers incufficient to grant the charter, and {t was to be asked from the Queen at Madrid. The Diario announces that the cern crop bas failed throughout the greater part of the island, and urges the gvernment to suspend for a time the duties on Indian corn and meal, It states that these articles aro not only necessary in large quantities for the cattle, but thet they form an important ftem of food to all of the laboring and poorer claeses. The amount of corn imported tn 1854, whee Cuba made a fuli crop, was 354,000 arrobas, (of 25 pounds,) and the demand this year upon the United States must be immensely larger. [Cuba rates two creps of corn annually, amounting ta the aggregate to seven millions of bushels. The amount of the winter crop, which is said to have suffered largely, msy be estimated at three millions of bushels.—Eps Besa } A violent bail and rain storm bad been experienced tm the tobacco district, which bad done mach damage to the tobacco plants, and it was feared would produce a serious effect upon the crop. The plant corn had also suffered greatly. In the sugar district, in the vicinity of Bourba, great destruction had been caused to the standing cane by a fire which first broke out in the woods, and spread to the cane ficlds. Eighty-seven fields are said to have beeo burnt, but from some of them the oane had already Deen cut. A party of four of the imported Chinamen had com mitted suicide, at Guanabacoa, near Havana, by taking » Jarge quantity of Jacdanom, mixed with poison. When found, two of them lay apon their wooden beds already dead, and the other two expired shortly after. ‘A project is on foot to build another large thestre, to rival the Tacon, to be called the Concha theatre. The snbecription was very nearly filled up, and the Prensa says that it was certain that Havana would have an- other gran tratro. The same paper states, that Don Joaquin Rangel had arrived in that city from Vera Cruz, on his way to the United States. It is said that the mission of Senor Ran- gel is to arrange the pian for s protectorate of the United States, over the republic of Mexico. He would remain a sbort time in Havana pefore embarking or New York, The Prensa adds, that if this plan is carried out, {t would be the poisonous sade that will sooa finish that unbappy repubitc.
