M. ‘The stock market docs not present a very favorable as- pect for holders of the fancy railroad securities. There was quite # stampede this morning among holders of pag Southern and Cleveland ani Toledo Railroad stock, The former fell off 3} per cent and the latter 2 Ter cent. The rapidity with which these two prominent railroad stocks have ’ran down should {put holders of other bigh priced railroad stocks on thelr guard, Uniti) within the past few weeks the stock of the Michigan Southern Railroad company was pretty well maintained. It ranged from 86 to 90 per cent, and the clique having it tm charge put forth threugh its orgen all sorts of state ments in tte favor. Fortunately, for some time past the public have not been disposed to touch it. The stock bas been in bad odor with all operators outside of the et que referred to, and they were #0 involved with its financial affaire that tt became absolutely necessary to sustain prices at apy sacrifice, It is well known in Wal! strect who have been the prime movers in keeping this ‘tock alive so long; but tt is not so well known who are the sufferers by the rapid depreciation in market value. The different cliques engaged in bolstering the different prominent railroad stocks are so intimately connested with the finances of each company that they manage to saddle the losses upon the stockholders, when losser cocur, and pocket the profits themselves whenever profits appear. "The leaders in these cliques of spoou tators consider themselves entitled to the profits if there are any, for sustaining the , stand- ‘pg of the company in the market, and they also consider it no more than right that the company should shoulder the loss if there in any, for tt was in the service of the company thas tt was incurred. This is a very beac tifal game for the parties tmmediately concerned, but sure death to the stockholders. These railroad compa ates should open an account in their books headed ‘Oost d expense of sustsining the market price of the com: oapy’s stock.” Asextraordinary as this statement may ‘appear to the public, fi is strictly true, The mission of the Vice President of the New York Central Rallroac Company to Europe is a part and parcel of this system of fipanciering. If the stook is suoh a wonderful invest mont, there was no necessity for incurring such an expense tm putting it upon the London Stock Exchange. There ir already = want of good investments at home, without making such efforts to get rid of them, The agout of the New York Central Company sent to London to sim ply cpen transfer books in thet capital, is to receive a sala ry of $8,000 and a large outfit, The fact is that the Qpanciers of the New York CentraljCompany have antic! pated the decline of that stock in this market, and have endeavored to bolster it by this foreign movement. They know very well that the New York Contral road has seep ite best days. and that people on this side cannct be de cetved much longer, and that some outlet must be provi ded for the stock, if possible, as tt comes upon the market Ayear or two since, Michigan Southern was a much better stock than New York Ocntral ever was, and look at the price for it today.
