MMOCHING CALAMITY IN BLEECKER STREET. Ms. and Mrs. Besch Burned to Death and send Dellars Worth ef Property Destrey- od—Soenes and Incitemts at the Fire—The Lesece and Insurance, dic. Mertiy ater one o'clock yesterday morning, ® fire ‘wroke out in the sixth story of the cabinet furniture ma- wuhetering cetablishment of Bernard Bosoh, situated in the rear of No. 91 Bleecker street, corner of Mercer street. ‘Me flames spread repidly throughout the building, aad in ‘very short time each siory was enveloped in flames. ‘She five mory building, fronting on Bleecker street, was yetmeipally used for the furniture warerooms and the @welliag of Mr, Soveh and family, consisting of his wife ead stx children, five of whom slept in the premises on thet night; also Margaret Hines, Mrs. Bosoh’s sister, and ‘am intimate friend named Mary Barker. All these parties eecupied bedrooms on the fourth floor, fronting on Bleeok- er street, the third floor being eccupied for their parior ‘and dining rooms, It was the smoke forcing itself into the upper part of the building that awoke Miss Barker, fe alarmed Mr. and Mrs, Bosch, and also the children. Mav. Bosch dressed himself, and Mre. Bosch pet em ® par of her clothing. Mr. Bosch, tm order to eacertain the whereabouts of the fire, took a lantern md a toucket of water, supposing he could extin- gush H. From tbe frent building be proceeded (@veugm the thick smoke, until be reached the fitth fheor of the rear building, and Mrs. Bosch fellowed close Wer ‘him; and Mary Barker followed not far distant. & ring was heard at the street door bell, and Mary turned te go down, when the smoke extinguished her light. fhe then heard Mrs. Bosch calling out te her husband by the familiar term of ‘Daddy! oh daddy! where are you?” Ber voice then sounded like one half suffocating. ‘A faint reply was beard from Mr. Bosch, in a similar eendition. Mary Barker ran down stairs in a haif stifled tate, opened the street door and let in firemen and @thors to assist. She told them Mr. and Mrs. Bosch ‘were up stairs, and they burried up in search; but by that time the smoke became so dense that to exist on tho upper floers was impossibie. All the rect of the fam!- ay and occupants managed to escape, bet, terrible to re. nse, nothing has been seen of Mr. aad Mrs. Bosob, and they have undoubtedly perished. Among the first at the house after the alarm was Mr. Jebn Bireb, of engine company Ne. 4. Being well ac- quainted with the family he made his way up to their veome, where he met Miss Barker. She told him that Mr. ‘Beseb had gone up to the fifth floor with a pail of water te try to extinguish the fire, and that Mrs. Bosch had fol lowed him to endeaver to persuade him to leave the Deflding. Mr. Biron heard Mrs. Bosch calling her hus- ‘and, and started up stairs to rescue kim Lf possible. Altbough this was but twenty minutes after the alarm, the smoke was, to use his expression, as ‘‘biack as coal.”’ Be however made his way to the fifth Goer, being obliged private oe these are (wo tin boxes, supposed to con tain Mr. SDlpeonlpareiny ot gs pe @ne of Mr. Bosch’s sons states that ehiid, fan infant, was taken out of the building b; . This year Ne advent is hailed with more uban common sest, om aceount ef the long and se. vere barricade to which communication has been §1D- ‘Ihe loo King extended his dominion over the waters of the Chesapeake, and cheoked recetpte frem Baltimore, Norfolk, Pittsburg, Frederickaburg amd Georgetown, from which sources considerable eupplies of produce are ‘wsually drawn at al) seasons of the year. The Baltimore and Obio Railroad western freight is te a large extent re- forwarded to New York fora market, being conveyed Bither by light oraft of sailing vessels and e regular ¢ri- ‘weekly line of steam propellers, four of which have re" mained ready loaded for New York for some time, ios- bound near Baltimore. Ali this has been out off by 100, and the freight left to accumulate tn Baltimore. ‘Those shippimg goods to the interior, and especially to the South and West, have been mach perplered how to forward them through. We have direct raiiroad com munication with St. Louis and the upper Mississippi ; and yet every vessel up for Now Orieams has loaded rapidly this winter, and at good rates of freights, with packages of goods consigned for St. Louis and all the tewns on the upper Mississippi as bigh as Galena in Lilinots, 8. Louis bas, next to New Orleans, become one of the largest dis tributing points for goods to eur growing States of the ‘West to be found in the valley of the Mississippi. Obiea g0 being next to #, and may surpass {t in the mild months of jake navigation. Secing the severe embargo eo long tmposed on business, the advent of the spring trade must be viewed with do. Nght by al) classes, February has reached us, and we have bad « first aud second thaw, with the prospect of speedy communication by jand and water in every di- rection. ‘The spring trade must epen with unusual apimation. Io tbe cotton trade, abating some fluctuations, we expecta continuance of high prices to the end of the season. ‘Owing to the probability of a short crop, which {t is be- Heved will not exoced about 3,000,000 bales—which, at ‘the present high rates, averaging about sixty dollars por ‘vale, will bring more mosey tmto the country than the jarge supply of 3,600,000 bales did last year—at vixty dollars per bale, the present crop would be worth, ina round sum, $180,000,0C0. But the average of ify five doliare per bale, which the prices of the whole season will probably sustain, will give $165,000,000. Last vear the average prices did not exceed from forty io forty five dollars per bale; hence it will be seen that this year’s supply, though likely to be 600,000 bales joss than leat year, will exceed & in value. The spring trade in dry goods is expected to bo large, ‘and im staple goods, both domestic and foreign, no ms terial abatement in prices is anticipated. The large pad. ic gales are not yet anncuaced. A smal! saie took place yesterday. In the wholsale grocery trade the business ts ex pected to be active, as the stocks in the interior are supposed to be much reduced. The trade in breadstuffs ie expected to be active; but whether prices are to advance or recede will depend very Upoa the receipts and the Furopean demand, which !t is supposed will be more or less maintained until the next harvest. Owing to the reduced stooks in the Atlantic ports, and the reporied reduction in the amount cured at the West compared with the previous year, tt ia likely that provisions will, abating some ‘fluctuations, im the main rule high. Tobaoco, also, is expected in a measure to maintain remunerative prices. Rice, tt is Mkety, if not active, will not recede much below present Prices. On the whole the prospects of a large and active spring business im nearly all branches cf trade are quite enocuraging. Misdirected Letters. PREPARED BY W. B. DICK, OF PHILADELPHIA.
