Latterly, however, the number of Chinese in New York have very much increased, in consequence of the com mercial intercourse that exists between this port and the ports of China, They may be seen in Broadway and Chatham street, and around the Park fence, selling se gars, candies and other small wares, the only merit o ‘which is their cht apness, for the cegars bave ® most vil Jainous appearance, and are only bought by urchins and fel ‘imited, A year Fe een nl xia subjected them to so much aun that they genera'ly doffed it, except the'r long tail, and now appear in garments ingeniously Up £0 as not to fit jem af all, Ran ae mics fet end look ax uncomfort- able as le. Another discipio of Confucius gave us his name, which began with a Tob, the potpciel the intermeciate one sneeze, but is wholly indescribable with Engiien letters. ‘Ibis philosopber was young, and though be knew nothing of the war bis countrymen were engaged in, he was re- markably intelligent for a New York Chinaman, who appear eancae | to be what John Van Buren calls ‘Know fothings on national principies ’’ From bim we learn that there is about two hundred Cb'pamen in New York, who make their living by selling cheap segars made by themscives, and doing small trad ing im the by strecte, None of them wish to return to China, nor do any of them ever hear from their country- men by letier or otberwise. The stock market during the past week bas been unu- sualty sctive, The sales Rave been as large im the same {ime as in any previous period for years; but with ene or two exceptions prices closed witheut much change from those current af the close of the previous week. The cn- to the several cliques of speculators, and their operations are for the inflation of the partioular stock i which they are interested. New York Central has a clique of specu: lators from Albany and some of the western cities of this State, who ooadine their operations exclusively to that stock, Another clique regulates Erie, and the Michigan Southern, and the Cleveland and Boledo, and the Reading, 80 on through the list. All the individual capital, all the loans, all the money that can be raked together, fm apy way, or at ary expense, by each of the cliques concerned, is used for the inflation of these atooks. It 1 a.stock jobbing combination throughout. The only interes: outsiders take in the operations of these speculators is the iflation of prices to such points as may enable them to realize without loss, There can be no new purchasers for investment at current rates. The /acts which Ravo recently been brought before the pubiio mind by the aa val reporta of the New York Central, the Erie, the Read. ing and other companies, have go shaken confidence in this class of securities that the number of investers i daily decreasing, and the stocks are accumulating in largo blocks In the hands of speculators. The progress of this feeling of distrust bas been thus far very slow, for people were slow to believe that such corruption and such swind- ling eximed, They were slow to believe that men who in their private afairs acquired a character for honesty and integrity, would in a public capacity make use of the facilities and advantages thus epjoyed to enrich them- felves at the expense and ruin of the interests entrusted to them. It was natural that the public mind should he. sitate about giving credence to such things, and refuse for a time to believe them true; but the facts have been so overwhelming, and the truth of the most serious charges has become ao palpable to the most ordinary comprehension that it can be no longer doubted, and the effect is daily seen in Wall street, in the efforts of the various cliques to sustain prices by absorbing al] the stock tbat comes upon the market for salo. ‘The business of the week at the Stock Exchange bas been ma:kea by some changes werthy of remark, The tendency bas been towards @ decline, and the heavy holders of atock have appeared uncomfortably conscious of this fact. The usual means havo, therefore, been re- sorted to to maintain prices and to give a new impetus to tbe market, The severity of the winter is known lo have bad oat injurious effect upon the railway interest. ‘The stock und bond dividend businces bas been driven {nto the ground, and people are begiauing to nee the bad ‘effects of s0 wretohed a policy. The receipts of all the leading roads are known to be falling off; and hence tae late tendenoy to low prices. To counteract all theac fufluences the means above referred to have been used. They bave chiefly consisted in large transactions mado at the Steck Exchange, to give the appearance of great ac tivity. Parties heavily interested have filled the Ex change with orders to buy and sell particular stocks to fn almost unlimited extent This has made it appear that a heavy business has been executed, when ja re- allty the trangactions bave been all manifestly for tho seme parties. Such are the opinions of tbe beet informed men on the Excbango.
