There was, f anything, a little more activity in some stocks, at little lower prices, The movement to-day in Reading was greater than uaual, and it is now the kading speculative stock inthe market. Since the payment of the dividend it bas fallen about four per cent, and there are free sellers at current prices. Now York Central aad Erie were sold in Jarge lots to dsy. The tendency of prices was down: ward from the opening to the close, Missour! 6's fell off 1% per cent; California , 1; Panama, %; Ilinois Central Ratiroad, 34; Galena and Chicago, };; La Crosse and Milwaukie, 1. The transactions in Missouri State 6’s continue large, but prices have not been suatained, Tho advance was in anticipation of an active demand for banking purposes under a general law about being introduced into the State of Missour!, The supply has proved to be much greater than the immediate de- mand, an! prices are now about two per cent below the point from which they started. New York Central Rail- road bas been steady for sometime past, but the high price has brought a geod deal of stock Into the street, and induced operators to sell short to some extent. Weasball, without donbt, bave ii announocd after tho arrival of every uropean steamer, that large orders bave been received from Tondon for this stock, and we bave no doubt it will be quoted in all the fancy London circulars. ‘There {s s oless of stock brokers in London, partics sent out by our /arge railroad companies, who issue cir- culars especially for this market. They are intended solely for effect on our Stock Exchange, and are got up for no other object. Ié is therefore their business to make good quotations for certain railroad stocks, and such remarks as may be necessary to help along Wall street speculators. Tbe New York Central Railroad stock has juat been put into the bands of these brokers in London, and {tis now regularly quoted. A good many holders bore would like to get prices for their stock thatare quoted in these circulars—but London and New York are two very different markets. A railroad stook, likes prophet, is not appreciated in its owm country. At the seccnd board the market was quiet. In some instances higher prices ruled, Reading advanced 3 per cent; Cleveland and Toledo, };. There were small sales of Nicaragua Transit at both boards at 47; a 5 per cent. ‘This stock goes up and dowa as the news from Nicaragua about Walker is good or bad. In the event of Walker being defeated an effort will be made to revive the old ‘Transit Company. Its boats are now in bad way, and aro fast going to decay. We have no idea that the defeat of Walker would put an end to filibustering in Nicaragua. ‘There are 80 many directly and indirectly engaged in the present movement that if it should fail now it will not be abandoned, and any company which has beoome identi- fled with the aliies would be tn continual danger of having its transit property seized and destroyed. ‘The Assistant Treasurer reports to dey as follows :— Total reeeipts..... $427,541 45 Total pay meu 66 281,397 ‘Total balance, 12 778,863 47 The warrants entered at the Treasury Depariment, Washington, on the 27th instant, wore as follows:— For the redemption of stoc! + $2,329 28 For the Treasury Department. 114,126 28 For the Interior Department For Customs., :136,070 41 : 2,699 00 24 95 Repay ment on account of the Navy. ‘The coupcns for interest, due Febroary 1, 2957, upon the bonds of the Sacketts Harbor and Saratoga Railroad Company, will be paid upon presentation on Monday, Feb. 2, at the Park Bank, A bill bas been roported favorably in the Assembly of thir State, to allow the Sackett’s Harbor Railroad Com- rary to build canals to connect the navigable waters with their ‘oad and the uppor waters of the Hudson. ‘The interest warrants of the bonds of the Bar ington and Missouri Railroad Compavy falling due on tue first dey of Febroary will be paid at the Broodway Rank.
