B. SQUIRE COTREL, U. S. Commercial Agent. STATEMENT OF MAJOR M. E. BRADLEY. ‘We have been favored with the following statement by Mojor M E. Bradley, late of Walker’s army:— Benningsen was relieved by Col. Waters, with four companies of battalion rangers. The twe commands then anton went down to St George, on board the steam er Virgin; there the artillery and men were ianded ‘The next day Rivas was evacuated by the enemy and Gen, Walker took posscesion of it. It is his head quarters at present; be bas received large supplies of provisions ‘and clothing from California and the Atlantic States, so his army is well supplied with thom, as well as with amma nition, He has a thousand of the bost men he has ever bad under bis command, nine pieces of artillery, two now!tzers and five mortars; he is abie to bold his own for at least five months, against any force that can be brought against him. He has full possession of the Transit route from Virgin Bay to San Juan de} Sar. ‘The steamer Slerra Nevada arrived from San Francisco at San Juan dei Sur about hali past one o’clock P. M., on the 34 of January, with about 370 passengers; they pro- oceded by and to Virgin Bay, and there embarked on board the steamer Sen Carlos for Greytown. On arriving ‘at FortSan Carlos Lieut. Tyler and Dr. Hardcastle were sent ashore; the rest of the company continued down the river. When we had gone about a mile we mo} the river steamer Ogden, who hailed us, and said that the river had been taken possession of for Vanderbuilt by one thousand men, but that the passengers and everything on board our boat could nevertheless proceed down the river without being molested. We did so, and 1 thus saved two boxes of treasure belonging to Walker’s govern- ment, which were under my charge. We arrived safely at Greytow: while landing the passepgors aud bag gage there, the steamer Texas bove in sight; this was oa the 6tb of January. Immediately aficr the river steamer Routh, on which we oame down the river to Greytown, was uploaded, she started back again up the river. Te Texas tok ont 260 men for Waiker, all well armed snd cquipped. Tere is a rivor boat at Punta Arenas which they were repairing when we left that place on the 14th instant. They expected it to be ready im forty-eght hours, They bave two six pounders and plenty of ammunition. The mon ail went there armed with Mississippi rifles, ‘They aro under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Lockridge. Jast as eoonas they get tbe steamer ready they intend to make an elfort to clear ‘We river and get possession of the boats that have beea captured, Thetr greatest fear in relation to them is that tbe enemy will burn them. ‘The Costa Ricans got possession of the boats by float ‘wg down the river gSerspiqui on rafws, @ force of 106 men. They made their rendezvous « short distance above Greytown. When they got into Greytown, ft has been currently reported that the commander oi the kag lish fees there told them#if they needed any assis tance 10 take possession of the boats and place it should be iurnisbed them, The Costa Ricans easily took pos seraion of the four river steamers, after which they im mediately got up stoam and proceeded up the river to Castilio rapids, They were tbere the last I beard of them. Capiain Thompsoe, with a command of forty one men, stationed at ite mouih of the Sorapiqui river, was sur- prised by the Costa Ricans in their descent down that river, and lost thirty one men; himself and tae remain- ‘mg ten men were taken prisoners; he was badly wound- ed, and Lieutenant Anderson was killed. Captain Krager sad about forty men were also taken prisoners at San Carlos; also the crews of the sveamers. They were all sent down the mver to Greytown, and discharged upon parole, After the enemy evacuated Rivas the Costa Rican por. Uon of the army retreated across the Transit route beck wo Costa Rica, while the Nicaraguan portion of !t, under Geperal Martinex, retreated towards Granada. At s place two miles this side of Mandini they met a detach. ment of Leonese, when a sanguinary engagement took place. On the 27th of December the captain of a detach. ment of rangers from Walker’s army captured the oom. mistary of the enemy, ani learned from him aboat the batt) ween the Loonese and Nicaraguans. ‘Chi for General Walker. OUR LIMA OOBRBSPOPDEROB, Laaa, Des. 10, 1866, Important Intelligence—Attacks of the Perwoian *Preasupon the American People—Desertion of Another Vessel of War—Return of the Saleedo —An Intended Outbreak in the Oapital—Arrets and Breaking of the Constitution, The Lima Comercio, published on the day of the date of my last communication, was fall of bitter attacks upon the American people, who the Peru- vians call Yankees and filibusters. This ovtrage ‘arcse from the fact that Admiral Salcedo, whow Vs abont being despatched with the steamers ef 4, Ucayali and Tumbes to endeavor to Teta » the expect success, give me Peruvians, for *” Ps set of cowards and traitore; I want 4 moricaig” ‘And that Castilla, when surreunde“, by @ nunber of foreigners in Callao, said, “ ~ give each «f you three ounces as bounty money, and I ed Apurimac and Loa, said to Castilla, “Do ne’ posit in the hands of & foreign firm $90, 000, to be distributed amon, you if you bring tack wy two vessels of war. Ga, therefore, and teach the revolutionary rascals (belitres) a lesson which if they live they will ‘sot forget. Butcher them tea man.” It is but ratiqnal to suppose that words of this kind, coming from persons holding so high positions as Castilla and Salcedo, and delivered to's gang of men whose appearance alone would make any na- tion endeavor to shake off relationship with them, should create angry sentiments; but there was no just cause for using offensive expressions to us as a people, because out of the hundred and seventy-nine men shipped to accompany the expedition there could not have been more than twenty Americans; and I have my doubts of there being more than ten- True, they were collected and shipped by an Ameri- can, and it appears with the sanction of the United States Conéul at Callao; but sach were not sufficient reasons for the attack. Here are some extracts from an article headed “Pilibusteros.” After alluding to the fact that Castilla in the late revolution against Echenique employed the services cf eome Americans, the writer goes on to say:— Jn the foremost ranks of Castilla’s army, figured as an upconquerable vapguerd, and as the destructors of a thovsand precious lives,’ horde of Yankee filibasters, ought at a cost of their own weight in gold to cesolate our towns and form rivers of blood along tho road which Castilla travelled to the supreme magist-acy of the republic, This column of Yankees was named, as & scoff at us, the ‘Sacred Column. It was tho guard in which Castilla, not wishing to trust bis own countrymen, put ell bie comidence. To this day Castiila remembers them, snd so will history, but av an everlasting degrada- ton to our covntry. This column of Yankee riflers was, im fact, the vanguard of (ke filibusters who have attacked other American republics; and who, it things do no change, wil finally relieve us of the responsibiitty of governing ourselves. It isa fact that some Americans were in the corps alluded to, but certainly their number did net exceed ten; and in lace of their services being purchased for their “own weight in gold,” actually hired at sixty dollarsa month each. Lad- mit that they done great service to the starving army of the Liberator; for, they would ride into Echenique’s very ranks, and drive out his catdle, to victual revolutionary army. I, myself, saw them in Lima, day after day, running after Castilla to re- cover arrears of pay: and though the Liberator proiised them in the event of his getting tne Pre- sidency, a proper recompense for their services, he merely Jaughed at ther captain (Johnston) when they petitioned for it. ie writer probably forgot to mention that nine of these same ten men sought a home on the banks of the river Amazon, but were massacred by the suldiers stationed at the fort of Zambatinga, the Pierce administration while holding out ises of protection to its citi- zens residing in all parts of the world, allowed this shameful butchery to pass over as if so many American hogs had been slaughtered. Poor men, they deserved a better fate and a more attentive go- vernbment. The writer goes on to say:— This man (Castilla) who bad entored Lima amidst fire and blood, with Bolivian lances and North American rifies, sent off the same arms to combat agaios! Areyuipe and Moquegua. We yesterdty raw him traversing the streets co: Callao, at the head of w bandit of Yankee Mii Dusters bought to assassinate Peruvians. Csstilir bimeseif conducted them on board, thereby degrading hia insignis of cifloe, copivucding himself with peopie who kill tor money, frateruizing with the dregs of American society, and exchanging worcs an4 promises @ith a horde of Gilbuatera, He deposited in a foreign house two hun dred thousand dollars of tbe public money, t» be given to these Yankees {t they succeed in taking our vessels; be offered them graces, horors and money as a recom pense for spilling our fellow citizens bicod; anally, be delivered to them the mode of attack, which was to board the vessels uncer the protection of a flig of trace, and when on deck to knife every one they could find oo I make these lengthy extracts to how we are, as &@ people, misrepresented here; I mayada that, —— such are the opinions advanced by bat one individual, they are, nevertheless, the sentiments of the people at large towards us. As I mentioned to you in my last, the two veasels of war remaii at command of the government were sent off on the 26th ultimo, toendeavor to retake the Apurimac and Loa. On the 28th the Ucayali returned alone to Callao. The news soon leaked out that the Tumbes had runaway from her, and that on the Ucayali’s arrival at the Chincha Islands the commander of that station informed Salcedo that the captain of the Tumbes landed there that morning under the protection of the vessel's quns, sixty-three reons, alnong whom were fifty foreigners, and that he vessel had proceeded on to wg eg e- the other revolutionary ships. From what was learned from those put on shore, it appeared that the captain of the Tumbes declared the veasel under the orders ot Vivanco, on the same night that he left Callao, first putting under arrest all the officers and men who were supposed to be favorable to the government, and, that on the vessels arrival at the Chinchas they were put on shore. The arrival of the Ucayali with this alarming news, caused the greatest sitement throughout the city. Rumors were flying about of an intended outbreak in the capital in the evening, and Castilla learned that an attempt would be made to seize the Ucayali. Strong patrols were to be seen parading through the city at night fall, and a number of arrests were made. About nine o'clock the expected moment seemed abont to commence, for at that hour the slathing to and bolting of every door in the city resembled a powerful shock of earthquake. The military immediately assembled, and were stationed in different parts of the city; however, no attack was made, and the utmort tranquility prevailed in the capital during the night. From what suove- qvently transpired it appears that an attempt, both military and civilian, was to be made that night to reinsta*e Gen. Echenique in office; bat, that at an advanced hour, one of the conspirators exposed the pa oY the party to Castilla, an the same time him a list of the names of the leaders. The President lost no: a moment in arresting the latter, whom he immediately secured in the Case of Cal lao, «nd thas prevented the movement from bein, attempted. nty-three petitions were prose: to the convention on the following day oy some of the most respectable citizens, to nave their relatives released upon the ide that they were arrested contrary to the article of the constimtion, and in defiance of all justice and right aa free citi- zens. The convention, however, has not yet taken any in the matter, and the men remain in pri son without having even their depositions taken by the authorities. ~ Lima, Deo. 12, 1856. By the arrival of the southern and northern steam- ers on the 10th inat., we are placed in possessson of important news from the revolutionary party. On the 4th he issned his firet manifesto or preclamation which, as an expression ef his principles, was re- ceived with the greatest satisfaction by the people- The document contains no vain promises, nor is it filled with jpous declarations, such as ia asnall the case. It is merely a straightforward statement, and one would suppose that its anthor was worthy of his intry. When tie mail left Arequipa General Vivanco was bosy forming @ ministry and atteading to other official business, and itis generally undere'ood that he will immediately commence operations against the few government tr ope who still hold possession of some important positions in the South.
