Our Macon (urrespendence. Macon, Ga, Dec 23, 1866. Peeling of the South on the Question of Disso ion— Revival of the African Slave Trade— rguments Against and in Favor of the Move t, Ses, Bree post of your correspondent, near the centre the South, locally, and within the borders of her pire State, is calculated to give him sme advan- ke of information on Southern topics; and while pb HERALD desires to keep the people well informed every portion of the map of busy lile, it is, per- ps, no less important that a local correspondence puld be true in point of sentiment as io point of formation; and under this conviction some gene- remarke ase made in this letter on the sentiment present political condition of the South, to the sion of news proper, to which, in fact, such an on is the natural preface. It seems to be a diffieult problem— in fact, almost psradox—to the Northern mind, that, notwith- |anding the Presidential victory, the manifest des- y of Kansas, and the flattering prospect of our ve territory in Central America, Mexico and the est Indies, the South fhould remain dissatis- dand cross. The agitation of the Presidentia’ n bas not subsided—the potitical canldron ny The conviction of the Charleston Mer tpat the election of Mr. Buchanan has ba; ep out another lease of the Union, is that of minds of the south. This dissatisfaction with e Union is, however, owing tw no special caures, x does it threaten ay immediate disester. It is erely the growth of a conviction. The South is be- miug More acd more convinced that it can dis- mse with the Union; and many only wait some ecial prover , some particular excuse, to ow themselves disunionists, and to forswear the ceka snd cheese of their Yankee bretbren. On le other band, there are numbers who betieve that wonld be madness and sheer cowardice for the onth to withdraw from the lists and to give up the natitutional victory at a moment most ream ber, and when everything nage" well, Ac- 1ding to this opicion—which is that of conserva- ye and reflectiog men generally tbe South should land or fall by the constitution, Troe courage buld dictate this conrse, even it the hoce of ulti- late victory inthe South, bolding the balance of hiitical power, cid not coamend it. Under these bevictions, the bard fought field of constitu- mal contest ‘should not be forsaken le South’ for shelter beneath a divi gz, but the battle should be continued th the same weapons, while new exertions ould be put forth to conquer" by tie form of the mstitution. This is about the present state fait bs in this portion of the country. The party tnat 1m favor of keeping the ficld under the banner of e constitu sees the necessity of following ap h_ viel and of devising new measures for puthern advantage and developemen!. Indeed, the 1e-opening of the ve trade may be safely argued as 2 moral ques- on, op which ground the Savannah Convention left at the paiticular instance of the Virginia legation, on the motion of Mr. Andrew Han- ,and where, as was remarked, the men the measure properly commences. ceed ex of the the slave trade, studiously accumulated louse of Commons, and magnified by the eloquence rte testimony, collected by a commitice Wilberforce acd Mackintosh, may no longer exist reality, if only proper means of transport are 0 d, and @ passe Jaw enforced ia the trade. ‘Thns-siaves might be om Africa in health aud without discomfsrt, and hus be avoided those scenes of roy ae Byes ship- bard which alone have given to .be trade the hor- ble aspect portrayed by ecators of the British Par- ment.
