FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Fray, Nov. 7—6 P. M. The stock market opened this morning with a strong upward tendency, and before the close an advance ranging from one-quarter to one and three- quarter per cent was realized. [Illinois Central bonds went up 1 per cent; Pennsylvania Coal, j; Cumberland, {; New York Central Railroad, |; Erie 4; Harlem, j; Reading, 1); Cleveland, Columbas and Cincinnati, { ; Michigan Southern, j; Iinois Central Railroad, }; Cleveland and Toledo, 1); Chi- cago and Rock Island, j; La Crosse and Milwaukie, 1. Michigan Central Railroad fell off | per cent. The market closed firm, with an active demand for stocks. Railroad bonds advanced to-day, with large sales, Tilinois Central bonds sold tothe extent of $60,000, opening at 90} and closing at 91{ per cent. New York Central Railroad was freely offered, and was notso firm as others. Erie sold largely for cash, and was higher at the clore. Reading was one of the most buoyant stocks oa the list. Near- ly eight thousand shares were sold, notwithstand- ing which higher prices ruled at the close than at ‘the opening. The shorts are evidently of tho opinion that the bulls will hold control of the market for a time longer, and that higher prices must rule. The holders of stocks are mush more excited on the rise than the bears were on the fall. and are very likely to be led into some extravagant operations. Within the present week New York Central Railroad has advanced 3) per cent; Erie, 5 per cent; Reading, 7; 3} that might well satisfy any one; but the public mind appears to be much beyond these points. The rise exhibited in today’s prices cannot be looked upon in the same light asan advance to the same extent upon a quiet, steady market. It cannot be con- sidered an undoe inflation, for the rise has been upon a market undaly depremed. Prices have not yet advanced to their former level. They are still considerably below the average of the six mooths previous to the great decline; and until they get above that point the movement may not be con- sidered of a highly speculative characte. The great pressure upon the stock market having been removed, prices have merely retarned to their former level. If they go as much above the points now ruling as they have already above the lowest dip of the market, then it may be time enongh to look out for a reaction and for sudden finctuations. Within the past few days several important changes have ocourred in the position of financial affairs. In the first place wo have advices from London that the bullion in the Bank of England had inctessed in one week one million six hundred and forty-one thousand pounds, In the next place, the Cunerd steamer from Boston, va Wednesday, took out much less specie than expected, aud the steamer from thie port to-morrow—Saturd.y— vill take out comparatively a small amount. The Sub- Treasury of this city last week paid out about four hundred thousand dollars more than it received, and the payments this week are likely to be full as large. We have advices from Washington of the paymea’ of eight hundred and forty-two thousand do! Jars of Oaliforma bonds. We shall have another California remittance along by the middle of next week, and the Cunard steamer from this port for Liverpool on Wednesday next, will not take a very large amount of specie. All these things must have their effect; but whether it will be temporary or not time only can determine. After such @ period of depression, such favorable events are likely to have more than the usual influence upon prices, At present the movement is upward, and the rise has been rapid. Buyers are plenty, and orders from the country are daily received by the principal commission houses of the street, in large nombere. If this feeling lasts or spreads among all classes more generally, there may be a speculative excitement of some importance. The return tide of deposits has set in from the interior, and in a few weeks the volume is likely to be sufficient to arrest the drain upon the banks. The receipts of specie from the country have been of great service in keep- ing up the banks’ reserve. At the second board the market fell off a frac tion, notwithstanding the large transactions. New York Centra! Railroad declined } per cent; Erie, 4; Cleveland and Toledo, 1; Reading, 3; Michigan Southern, }; Chicago and Rock Island, }. after the board prices slightly improved, and at the close the tendency was decidedly upward. La Crosse and Milwaukie closed firm at 81? a 82 percent. The steamehip Atlantic, from this port for Liver- poo! to-morrow, (Saturday,) will take out between four and five hundred thousand dollars in specie. A telegraphic despatch from Philadelphia seys that the difficulty with the coal operators is increas ing. They have employed counsel to enforce their claims for dumpage, and the impreasion is that they will cease skipping coal from above to a great ex- tent. The tonnage last week was comparatively small. The new President has got his hands full from the start. The fall season being pretty much over, combined with the excitement growing ont of the election on the 4th instant, have caused almost a complete pause in the trade, the chief transactions having been confined to the districts nearest to us and to the city retail trade. No public notice has yet heen given of the period at which the canals are to be officially closed, yet the period for sending goods to the interior by them for distant points, via Baffalo, Oewego, &c., is pretty well over. Mach will depend upon the weather whether we are to have an early shut down to canal navigation—it is rare that It occurs before the 25th inst ; Lut in some instances it has occurred earlier, or hes been prolonged by unasually mild weather. itis believed that the foreign importations for the spring trade will not be on so large a scale comparatively as they have been during the past ‘nmmer and autumn. At least our importers, it is suppored, will not send ont as large orders, be cause the market is alrealy pretty well stocked, and jobbers have large stooks left over. If there should be a large inctease in importations it must come from the other side, induced by highness of money and oversupply of goods for the demand. Ry jhe Canada we learn that the trade in Man- Lamb Presh pork ‘sho sid | ¥ R ! tendency ingaw cotton, they will realize. ihe export trade in cotton piece goods week has been on a Hmited scale, the high prices for raw cotton having tended to check the production of heavy piece goods, suitable for the export trade. For the week ending November there were only 162 packages shipped from this port, valued at $10,704, waking a total for this year, from first of January last, of $32,863,863. at Boston last week 878 packages were shipped. The changes in the price of staple goods since our last report have been unimpertant. Standard heavy brown sheetings and shirtings continued firm at 84c. for browns, and at 7c. for standard light do. The market for bleached was steady, with sales more light. Dri'ls were in moderate request, at about Sjc. for brown, 9c. for bleached, and 10jc for blue. The demand for omnabergs for bagging continued to maintain prices, and the demand was hardly equal to the production. Corset jeans were quiet, at steady prices. Canton flanuels were in ex cess of demand, and only desirable and well known wakes could be sold at full prices. Denims con tinued firm, and the best established makes were at 0c. & 10jc. Stripes and ticka were Jess active, though steady, and sold close up to production. Cotton duck continued firm, without further ad- vance in prices. The business, however, was on a decreased scale compared with that of the preceding week. Prints were in good stock and dull. Ging- hame were sold close up and prices unchanged. ‘The season is about over for muslin de jaines, and prices were unchanged. The trade is almost over for cloths and cassimeres, while we have no change of moment to notice in prices. Tweeds and jeans were quiet. Flamnels and biankets continued firm, and with fair sales of the latter at full prices, while the stock was reduced and light supplies remain ing over. The prices of shawls were well sustain ed, witha good city demand, while the jobbing trade was tight. In foreign dry goods the trade with jobbers was very light, and the importers are holding over and looking forward to the opening of the spring trade. Prices in the absenve of free seles are maintained at previous current rates, which, however, may be considered more or less no minal. Opinions differ regarding the stocks left over in jobbers’ hands. Some consider them larger than usual, which we think is correct; while others represent them as less than at the same season last year. Stock Exchange.
