At the close yesterday the stock market was much de- pressed, All the life and activity of the few previous day3 had disappeared and given way for a dull, heavy feeling. At the time the upward movement com menced, we showed that it conld not be continued; that it had no basis, and that those who were driven into the purchase of stocks would be serious sufferers. The re- sult shows the correctness of our ‘views. The bears solzed upon that opportunity to put out large contracts, and gome of the largest holders were induced to increase their line, Overloaded as they were with stocks, any increase must prove burdensome and tax their carrying capacity to the utmost. The next news from Europe is not likely to help money matters much omthis side, We hardly antictpate another advance in the rate of interest by the Bank of England by the next arrival, but we do expect to hear of an active demand for money in London at the rate last established by the bank. The first effect of that increate inthe market value of money was to arrest the demand, but we have no idea that that would continue more than afew days, when the inquiry for money would become as active amever. The probability is that the Bank of France will maye a further advance, 4N OPERA CORR, | and the Bext steamer may bring advices to that Total... 6s effect. This would force the Bank of Eagland iato « simi- Jar movi meas as No distant day, and the elfect of such ia- fiuences upon the market can be easily imagiced, Ths Bank of France is uot geing \0 suspend epecie paymouts unt ol) other expedients fal. Such a desperate alver- native will nx be resorted to ontil, after 4 hard gr: {s forced upon the management. In time of pea: large resources, it would not do to give up without a struggle; and we have an idea that the struggle must be ® severe cre before the bank would succumb. It would be disgraceful to act otuerwise. Pn veers $80,657,730 29 Since Saturday, 11th inst., inclusive, the shipments of specie from tbis port have been upwards of two millions of dollarg. In the game time the receipts have been about sixteen hundred thousand dollars. The Sub Treasury gaiued last week $276,000. In the face of these movements of the precious metals {t strikes us that the bank state- ment on Monday must show a trifling reduction in the specie reserve, The shipment by the Arago on Saturday will not come out of the last week's eupply of specie, but will affect the aggregate for noxt week. The Daily Wisconsin, of the 4th inst., thus speake of the Milwaukie and Horicon Railroad extension: — The recent extension of this road to Brandon, eight miles beyond Waupun, is an important step to the com- pany as well as to the community at large. Iu addition io the iperease of travelling facilities & also ly be- vefitaa numerous clase of farmers, who’ brought nearer to market than her It is empected that double the former amount o/ freig@t will be trans- ported over the road after this date, until a further exten- sion to Ripop, seven miles beyond—which will take place ‘jp ive or six weeks—and that then there will bea very heavy increase, There are now two passenger and two treight waing daily each way. Last Saturday’s train >rovght in about 10,000 bushels of grain there is probably now & daily average of about 8,000 bushels. The Chinere sugar cane seed, distributed by the Patent cfice last spring, promises to be a complete success at the North. A package of seed wis planted in Bucks county, Pa., latituie 40}, degrees north, and has arrive! at maturity, The maximum height of the atalk was ten feet, and the prodoct im grain much greater than any cereal under cultivation. The stalk is perfectly green after the seed bag reached maturity, and the saccharine principle is then fully developed. The juice, which is mort abundant, is very eaccharine, quite as much s0 as the variety of cane culiivated at the South. Whether the juice contains the game amount of crystallizable sugar remaing to be tested. Should it be found equal to ordi- ary cane in tbat reapect, a new era in the agriculture of ‘be North will be inaugurated, and an immense breadth of land be devoted to its culture as soon as the necossary sced can be obtained, which will require another 5 car at least. Thereed, having been distributed late in the epring, which was cold and backward, there is good reason to believe that much pian'ed did not reach maturity. Should the plant fail, so far as the manufacture of sugar is con- cerned, yet its value as a forage crop cannot be over esti- mated at the North. Cattle, horses and hogs eat the entire stalk with avidity, and no doubt would fa'ten rapidly on it. The seed, which is ema'l, has a thin black bull which can be taken off, leaving a fine white four as the residue. We have no means at present of estimatior the value of this flour as an article of food, but no do: tte merits will be fully investigated. The culture require Jor the plant is similar to that adopted for Indian o @ when planted in rows, and the seed should be put iaw the ground shout the same time. As it isa quick and strong growing plant, it should be well manured. ‘The value of genera) merchandise imported into this port during the week ending Friday, October 1 4 Total importation...
