Que of the very best two mile trote in harness that bas taken place for years camo off on Wednesday last over the Tnion Course, for a purse and stake of $2,500. The raee was between Lady Moscow, Rocket, and Lantern— the former winning ina short rubber, in the very capi- tal Gime of 6:08 %{—5:11. Probably three Lorses never came together iu better eendition for two mile work than the three above men- ‘woned, and three horses never performed their task more satisfactorily to all parties. Lady Moscow has im- ‘proved very much this season; and, in fact, appears to Bare entirely recovered her speed, and seemed just as eapabie of rotting in 5:04 now as she did on the day she eontended with Jack Rossiter. Addisdonal evidence has been adduced inthe case, which has followed with the arrest of Heury H. Barry, a brother-in-law of the pri soner, asa witness {n the case. Tacespay, Oot. 16—6 P.M. ‘The stock market took a turn upwards this morning ‘The principal buyers were the shorts, and they bonght with a great dealof spirit. Upwards of seven thousand sbares of Erie, aud more than ten thowand shareg of Reading were sold at the first board. Of Reading, nearly seven thousand sharea solid for cash, New York Con- tral was put out freely. Michigan Central was a litte more active than uaull. Cleveland and Toledo was rather quiet, only two small lots were sold. At the first board Minos Central Bonds aiyanced + per cent; Michigan Sonthern Railroad, 1; Chicago and Rock ‘sland, Gaiena and Chicago, \; New York Contral 2 Resdivg Ratlroad, 5;; Michigan and Toledo, 1; and Clere- land nod The upward movement to- day wes caused principally by the reports received by the last steamer from England, of the probabil: suspen sion of specie pay ments on the part of the Bank of France. ‘The anticipation of such an event has put up prices ta this market for railrosd stocks { « 1 percent. There is so moch sbeurdity about this fact, and so much ignorauce and bind stupidity exhibited in its operation, that we can hardly give it a moment's serious consideration. It is so preposterous on the face of i that no senaible maa can be deluded by any such excitement. Men of capital aro too shrowd and too well posted relative to the effect of certain causes in the Qnancial world to be driven into any such movements, and afew days will open the eyes, and wo fear lighten the pockets of those who have, without ® moment's thought, involved them- selven largely a pufchasers of stocks, at a time, above all others, when the true policy was tosell. A suspension of specie payments by the Rank of France ean overt we should look upon with fear and trembling. Every specie paying country would be so- riously injured by such a movement. The Bank of Eag- land and all tbe great specie paying banking institutions of the Continent would be compelled to contract their ope- rations to @ very narrow limit, to prevent an alrming drain of gold and allver. They would be compolied toact upon self defence, otberwisc specie would be drawa from them, without the power of drawing it back by the usual operations of trade, It would not follow that the Bank of France, under @ suspension of specie payments, would ceare buying spect, but on the contrary would bo more likely to become a greater buyer, and keep all it got. Now, the bank buys largely and pays out largely. It cannot retain suificient supplies under the present system, and it \s therefore arguod that a sus- pension is inevitable. Th® may be so, A suspension would not only stop the drain, but would enable the bank to accumulate, and there is the danger. ‘We aco by our last Puropean advice that the Rank of Vienna, & non-epecic paying institution, had accamulated forty millions of dollars of specie, avout one half of which was drawn from the Bank of France, If thie enor. mous accumulation haa been going oa in the Rank of \ienaa ‘with a view to a resumption of specie payments, {t will be frustrated by © suspension of the Bank of France. The Bank of Vienna will not dare resume with the Bank of France under suspension, for it would soon jose ite bal- Hon, and most of it would go back Into the vaults of the Dank of France, where \t came from. Under o suspension, the Bank of France would do just what the Dank of Vienna has done under similar circumstances. The Bank of Franee would draw bullion from every specie paying bank in Korope, and a great deal from this country, and Jock it up im ite strong boxes. It would be of no mors use to the financial and commercia! worid thaa if sun) ia tho depth of the ocean, The Bank of Franco bas not, in its epecte operations, been the cause of the financial preseare now co intense throughout Europe. That metitution had, at the date of the last accounts, leas specie in its vaulls than at any time witbin the provious #ix months, and the drain waa gradually going oo. Sucha course is cor- tainly not caloulated to create « pressure, ft mat- tered little how much gold the bank boaght, if it was pold out again immediately, i cortainiy bas not boarded any; and yot speculators in stocks on thie ide of the Atlantic fancy tha! ths suspen sion of euch am institution would afford instant relief, A very different opinion prevails jn the financial cirolen of London, and when the subject (s better under stood here the effect will be very different from that now anticipated. The political effect of a suspension of specie payments by the Bank of France appears not to havo beon at all considered Lowis Napolean has had too much experience in revolutions not to look at the whole matter in ite wort light before taking ony stop. but even then he may make a fatal mistake. The people of France are too deeply stooped !n all the forms of epecu- lation to be indifferent to the financial movements of the government.
