The stock market hangs heavy at points current at the close yeaterday, There was a little more cash stock than usual offering today, and the operations om time were more limited. At the first board Michigan Ceatral ad. yanoed \{ per cent, Michigam Southern, }¢; Cleveland and Toledo, j. Erie foll off 4 percent. There is evi- dently a «trong movement in Michigan Southern Railroad stock, The transactions to-day were unusually large, at Cleveland aad Toledo was quite as the sales amounting to nearly four Yew York Central Mailroad is about the sickest stock on the het just now; ocoasionaliy « good deal of stock changes bande, but prives are gradually set- ting down and must permanently rest at much lower points, Reading bas received a blow from the re cent reports relative to its productiveness, from which it Will not recover for a long time. It will be many months with continued prosperity in ite business before thie stock wil agsin reach prices which bare recently raled. Public confidence in it has been #6. riousiy shaken, and it probably will be for atime a more speculative stock than ever. Almost every day a ‘small lot of Galena and Chicago Railroad stock is sold at the board, for cash. This stock, we understand, comes from the Weet, and ie pickell up here by the shorts to fulfil contracts. Panama Ratiroad has receded (0 abou; the lowest point previously touched, and there are sellere on time at the current price. There has beeaa great change in the public mind in relation to raroad invest mente within the paet teatee months There ie By" £0 rbsee aty of thé leaupg railroad pocurns oF Blocks ai current prices, and £0 far ag outsiders are con- cerned, there is. nothing doing. The brokers find it ub} erly smpoeeible to attract new purchasers, At any tage of the market ouleidere do not come in as buyers. They bave, se a genera) thing, bad enough of railroad stoeke, and either avoid them altogether or operate as teller for lower prices. The developemente which are contpually being made in relation to railroad property are enough to deter men of even an ordinary quantity of cominon sense, from touching the stock at any price. In ail parts of the world this species of property appears to be particularly eubject to depreciation and bad manage- mnt, Defaications and all sorts of rascalities appear to be practized with greater impunity in railroad affairs ‘than ip our banking institutions, and parties interested as ebarehoiders are in continua) danger. The stock bas to bear the brunt of all disasters. Overissues, defalca- ons, damages from collisions and other causes, depre- ciation, decay, &c., a!) fall upon the stockholders, and no one holding a share of these great speculative companies knows whether it is worth anything or not. There is therefore great danger in holding the stock, ether for an investment or upon speculation for # rise. Any day or apy bour may bring forth developemenis ofa character {bat would run down prices ten, twenty or thirty per cent ima very short time. As a bondholder, a man is comparatively safle, but asa stockholder he is continu ally in imminent danger of some sort of a coliapse. There are at thie moment undiscovered rascalities in the financia) afaire of our largest railroad companieg, any of which are likely to be brought any moment to light, that would place the company immediately concerned in a covdition no better than the New Haven Railroad. It is well enough to consider theee things in time to guard egairet them, if possible. After the adjournment of the board the following sales of stocke and bonde were made at auction by A. H. Erie fell off 1); per cent; New York Central 2; Cleveland and Toledo 34; Michigan Southern %{; Chicago and Rock Island 'j, The Erie clique were taken all aback by the breakdown in prices at the second board.
