How Public Money ts Expended and Public Werk Done—An Investigation. ‘The Commitee of Repairs end Supplies of he Board of Aldermen met in Mr. Valentine’s office, City Hall, at 334 @, M. yesterday—Alderman Wm. The Louisville Journal bas discovered a mare's nest. It cays that democrats in Obio, hopeless of that State, are j coloutzing Kentucky with Jacobin voters, for the purpose { of securing the Buchanan electoral ticket in November. { Some travelling gentleman has given the Journal the fol lowing information:—Tbis gentieman informed us that { throughout the whole week le bad, during bis fifteen or upoo an , avernge, at least teu persors travelling out, all with axes upon their shoulders, ani al! carrying little black carpet facks, exactly alike in appearance. Though he bad’ been accustomed to travelling upon the road for years, he had never seen anything of the kind before, and his curiosity and his suspicions were strongly excited. He made in quiries of persons Hving a considerable distance out upof the road, and learned from tuem that the stream of im- migrants, with axes and little biack carpet bags, daily cortinued. Statements agreeing exactly with that of this gentleman have been made to us by various other re- spectable persons living upon the Bardstown road. The immigrants, moat of whom are said to have had the ap- pearance of American citizens, looked, of course, like men seeking employment, yet, when various gentlemen applied to dozens of them successively, offering them work a8 axemen at even twenty per cent highor wages than was ever paid anywhere in Kentucky, every man of them declined. They could not be hired upon apy terms, but all kept on for some unknown destination, and the eccomplisbment of some vuexplained purpose. We are informed, too, that precisely the same thing was occurring st the game time upon the Taylorsville road. Hon. J. D.
