Ge The Hon. Jobn C. Breckinridge, of Kentucky, tho ‘democratic candidate for Vice President of the Usited States, arrtved in this city on Friday last on his return from Pennsylvania. Perhaps it will be wel! for me to @ive youasketch of the progress of Mr. Breckinridge through the Northern States, Ii was certainly a despe Fate expedient to call him out, and his tour after the Vice Presidency will be nearly as famous in history a3 was ‘Gen, Scott’s hunt for a site for # military hospital. Mr. Breekinridge left Kentucky under rather peculiar circumstances. A squad of his Kentucky friends gath- ered at the railroad depo: where he was expocted, and gave bim a reception, and he made a sinall speech, ex- cusing bimscif from doing much, on the very tenable ground of physical incapicity, A small procession fol- Jowed him to the river, aud as he embarked on the ferry oat, ho and bis escort were assailed by @ voiley of stones, thrown by a band of “high toued”’ Kentucky Know Nothings of the Louisville mob kind, Several of the transparencies and two men were struck by the siones, and Mr. Breckiaridge came near having bia handsome face spoiled by a flying brick. On the Obi» side of the river Mr. B. was well received nd was the guest of the Mayor of the city, Hon. J. J. Farap, an old free solier—now an awful demoorat—and ‘was recetved by a large crowd, to whom he made a neat speech, but was evidently sulfering severaly from pby: cal exhaustion. fis speech amofrted to nothing more than « re bash of the ten thousand times repeated and despised nonsense about saving the Union. For one, he weid, be was sick of hearing that the Union was in danger. A false alarm bad often bren given; but this time the Union wae in imminent danger sure enough. Even his Buchanier audience laughed at this. fouy of it were so palpable as to be funny. ‘The next speech be wade was at Hamilton, a few miles worth of this where he * addressed the multitude "’ from gstend in fiont cf Hon. So when itcame his turn to make speech, a few days afterwards, he said that he would be glad to meet Mr. Breck rid ze on the etump or on the teid, at home or at the Clifton Houre, face to face, or at ten paces. Now, if this was not wariiie, Lshoald jike to know what would be.
