The prosecution immedi- ately took steps to sift the matter to the bottom, The letters he had deposited in the Post Office were suflered to go off, but others were written to their addresses— mostly commission houses in Mobile and New Orleans— advising them of the suspicious circumstances under which they left this office. It may be proper to state that in the examination referred to, the accused filed an affi- davit to the effect that his name was not “Thomas V. Williams,”’ but Robert H. Brown. Matters remained in this situation till Tuesday, the 26th inst., when Jobn A. Bondurant, Postmaster at Clay Hill, Marepgo county, Alabama, arrived bere. in pursuit of a man who had forged an order on B. Vaughan, of Mobile, in favor of one T. A. Jordan, a well known ter in the vicinity of Clay Hill. The letter containing the order was ‘written in Mr. Bondurant’s office, and bis suspicions hav- ing been aroused, instead of placing it in the mail, he carried it on his peraon to Mobile and delivered it to its address. The money was requested to be sent to 7. A Jordan, Milton, Fierida. Mr. B. immediately repaired to that point, and thence to Peusacola, where he learne what had been done at this piace, where he repaired and recognized the party in jail to be the same he was in pur- svitof.
