{NANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. tenner MONEY MARKET. Furvay, Sept. 5—6 P. M. ‘The stock market was quite buoyant at the opening this 0 and quite active up tothe close, There were of many cash transactions At the first board Vir- tnia 6's advanced 34 per cent; Illinois Central bonds, 34; (New Work Central Railroad, 3; Panama, }¢; Erie, };; Reading, %(; Michigan Central, 3; Cleveland and Pitts- fourg, 24; Michigan Southern, 1; Illinois Central, %; Ga- na and Chicago, };; Cleveland and Toledo, 134; Milwau- ise and Mississippi, };; Chicago and Rock Island, %. The operations in Brie, Cleveland and Toledo and Reading were o some extent, almost entirely on time. Illinois Ceatral jonds and stock were active, and sold in larger quantities ban usual. The bears have without doubt sold thom- elves @ little short, but not to an extent sufficient to an active demand for stock. Tne sales to-day by no means show that cash purchasers are plenty. The enoney market has cased up @ little; and call loans are more easily negotiated. This has been seized upon by large holders of stocks as a good opportunity sor realicing, and made the most of, The only jay to make i most available is to put out stock om time, buyer’s option, holding the stock for delivery. The market would be immediately crushed by a pressure of cash stock, Old holders may, by gelling on ime, buyer’s option, bring in from among the brokers a jnew ciass of purchasers, end ia this way put the saddle on anotner horse, Tho stocks do not, under the opera- jon of all the speculations going on, elther for a rise or leave the street. The brokers are piled up with them, and nothing but a very easy money market can give the means for carrying such loads. There is no re- jef from the outside for this dead weight. No one outside binks of buying the most inflated class of railroad stocks or investment. Thoy go from one brdker’s hands to another, at current rates, without any regard to value, and che profits or losses are confined to the Stock Exchange. here can be no permanent improvement in the market ‘alue of any stock until there is an outside demand, whieh distributes it among smal! holders, where it reats os a permanent investment. So long as twenty, thirty and forty thousand shares of any leading railroad stock lnre piled up in Wall street in large blocks, high prices cannot be sustained for any leogth of time. Spe- culation may produce an inflation, and the re puted transactions may sppear extensive, but the whole movement is artificial and of a temporary character. he daily operations of cliques of brokers do not give py real value to any stock security. The reported value imaginary, as it depends solely upon the ability of cer- in parties to keep certain stocks from pressing upon he market. Where these securities aro held in such large lots, the danger of the supply exceeding the demand is very great, and any day may in the midst of an active ive moment bringa sudden collapse. Holders of this class of stocks are in momentary danger. They now not what an hour may bring forth. The operation of any speculative railroad stock on the list during the jpast twelve months is enough to satisfy outsiders that it @ losing business of the most serious character. Take [New York Centra! Bailroad stock as an illustration. In he first week of September last year, this stock sold at 00 per cent. Sinee that time the company have paid 8 cent in dividends, To carry the stock that time ‘ould cost 7 per cent, leaving the cost at the same date bis year, to the holder 99 per cent. It now sells at 86 per cent, showiug a losson each share of the stock of 18 percent inthe year. Every man holding a share pf this stock for inveetment could have made, or rather wed, 13 per cent in the past year, Nearly all railroad are rapidly approaching the same general fate. bout three years since New York Central sold at 125 per ent. The dividends in that line have not paid for carry- ng, at that price, aud the difference in market value o-day 1s 29 per cent. It is utter folly to talk about prices being sustained for this class of railroad stocks. Decay has taken such hold upon them that they must gradually le down to points long since reached by the most prominent aud productive New England roads. We see Pvery few months an increase of capital in some way. This cannot go on for all time, particularly when the cost hnd capita! bave already reached figures far beyond the z iy of the road to make producti active peculation mey, for a time, inflate or sustain , but ue natural tendency is downward, and sooner or later grand bubble will collapse. At the second board the market was active, and con- iderable stock was pressing for sale. Panana Railrosa dvanced 3; per cent; Michigan Central Railroad, 3; shicago and Rock Island, 3g. Cleveland and Toledo 2ailroad fell off %¢ per cent; Erie Railroad, 1; Reading oad, 3j. Afier the board stocks generally were lower. Cleveland and Toledo closed at 753_ per con! ‘ew York Contral, 86%; Erie, 50%, and Reading 85° ose who have realized during this expaasion have nace a wise and sensible move. It has beena grand bpportunity to put out time contracts, aad the reported tions show that the bears have availed themselves Df it to the fullest extent. ‘The suit against C. K. Garrison, late agent of the Nicara- 19 Transit Company, brought by the present board of ma- , has. created considerable excitement in Wall If these charges are sustained, {t will account for the expenditures made by the company, and explain why stockholders remained so lorg without dividends. It ill be recollected that a few months since we did all in bur power toexpose the extravagance, toray the least, of his compery in the management of {ts foancial affairs, 4 it met withno response from the board of directors. \ that time the party now implicated and the manage. Hnent were on good terms, and were striving to adjust #0 as to re-open the line. Since they have quar. |, and are now at sword’s point. This accounts tor he proceedings just commenced. If this suit could be Followed up, we should feel that justice, though late, was , and that at last the facts were likely to meet the public eye; but we have no idea that it will como to hing, Itwill probably bo privately adjusted in so y, as others have been before, and we shall lose some developements.
