NEW YORK HERALD, MONDAI, AUGUST 25, 1858. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Sunpar, Aug. 24—6 P. M. ‘tbe stock market closed yesterday with a down- ward tendency. A’! the leading railroad stocks were freely Offered at the close at lower prices. The slight improvement realized on Friday could not be @ustained. It brought out s0 much stock and so Many cellers that the market gave way, aad closed heavy. Noone at all acquainted with the position of most of the stocks in the street can for a moment believe in any’ permanent rise. It 1s utterly out of the qaestioa. The season and everything else is against such amovement. There are no outside buyers; the brokers have the game all to themselves, and the dears have all the chances in their favor. The next news from Europe is likely to be favorable for the street interest. With a tight money mar ket in London, we cannot expect a different state of things on this side. With consols falling off at the rate of a half to three-quarters per cent a week, it would be folly to expect an improvment in Our market. Our last advices from London reported money worth five per cent on the Stock Exchange. ‘There is more probability of this increasing than @ecreasing, from the activity of speculation. Our own banks dare not, in the face of a growing strin- gency in fimancial affairs abroad, keep ap their present Hine of discounts. This alone, independent of local caases, would bring about a contraction. We are anxiously looking for the next European steamer. The Niagara will be due at Halifax about Tuesday, with seven days later news. From the tone of the last London papers we should judge that her financial advices would be of a gloomy character. A. H. Nicolay’s regular semi-weekly auction aale ‘of stocks and bonds will take place on Monday next, 26th instant, at 12} o'clock at the Merchants’ HL The exportation of specie from this port during the past week, was as follows:— ‘Su~wasts of Spacek FROM THE PoRT OF NEW York. The discount liae now is about eleven millions above that figure. It will be full another week before a California remittance will be due. The banks have another week’s expor- tation and payment into the Custom House to pro- vide for, before receiving supplies ‘rom California. ‘The city Comptroller is advertising for proposals for two hundred and fifty thousand dollars assess- ‘ment bonds, in gums of not less than one thousand dotlars. They will draw interest at the rate of six per cent, payable semi-annually, and will mature in five years. Proposals will be received until Satar- day next, the 30th instant, at 1 o'clock P.M. The anthracite coal trade is gradually improving. The Scauylkili Navigation brought down for the week ending om Thursday last, 28,825 tons, and for the season, 640,324 tons, against 651,039 tons to the same time (ast year. The Reading Railroad brought down, for the week ending on the same day, 45,345 tons, and for the current year to that day, 1,373,589 tons, against 1 528,521 tons to corresponding time ast year. By this exhibit, the supply of coal from the Schuylkill region is 160,147 toms behind the ton mage to the same time last year. From the Lehigh region we have a report of 4,004 tons of coal carried over the Lehigh Valley Railroad, for the week ending on the 16th inst.; and for the season, or rather from the opening of the road, about the lst of May, 82,742 tons. This road, with its pre sent limited equipments, is doing a very satisfactory basineas—much more than was done by the Read- dng the first year of its existence. Shipments of coal were, by canal, for the week ending with Sa- turday last, the 16th, 43,785 tons; and for the year, 664,143 tons, against 729,055 to same time last year. Adding the tonnage of the Lehigh Valley Road to that of the canal, we bave 746,143 tons as the ton- year, of 142,417 tons. A better supply of vessels during the past week has given considerable anima- tion to shipments. The retail trade remains with- out much change; bat there is evidently an im- proving demand, as yet, however, without any ad- ance in prices. The season is now far advanced, leaving hardly time enongh to make up the deficien- cy in the production, with no provision for an in- Creasing consumption.
