6 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONLY MARKET. Sunpay, Aug. 17~—6 P. BM. ‘The past werk bas been a very active one in the etock market. The transactions in all the leading railroaé securities have been unusually large, bat prices current at the close yesterday do not show any improvement on those ruling at the close of the mek revine ‘The money market has not been at all favorable for speculation in stocks for a rise. The demand for money has been active, and the liberal, but the indications of a severe strin- geney are daily becoming stronger, and we have no doubt at no distant day all the horrors of a tight money market will be upon us. The month of Au- gust is usually an easy time in financial matters. ‘The pank expansion generally reaches its maximum about the second or third week in the month, and the demand for the fall business hardly commences until well into September. We may, therefore, look tor @ more active demand, with comparatively a more I'mited supply about the first week in the next month. At that time the bank contraction will, without doubt, commence, and the specie reserve show @ smaller aggregate than we have yet seen re- ported tlis year. The steady expansion in bank diseonnts durwg the past three months has cre- ated ap impression in the public mind, or rather in a portion of it, that it is Likely to continue, that it has become permanent, that there can be no re- trograde step, that the presect movement can easily be gustained, and that the most that can be ap- prebended is a panse in the inflation. All those who entertain such anticipations are doomed to serious disappointment. The banks cannot, by any possibility, avuid or prevent a con- traction in discounts. A decrease in deposits and in specie ia inevitable, and with a reduction in these departments 2 contraction of loans must follow. The banks have no control over these movements. It is not optional with them to expand or contract. They fare governed by movements in the financial world, like everybody else, and are merely machines gov- erned by certaon principles. As the deposits increase the loans expand, and as they decrease the loans movement in this city in August and October in each of the past three years, illustrates the correctness of our views. It will be seen that in each year there has been, from August to October, an important con- tzaction in discounts aud deposits. Daring the sam- mer months the deposits in oar banks increase, and during the fall months they decrease. The cause of this is clear enongh to any one of ordinary compre- hension. About the month of Jane the business for the year is about over. Nearly all the crops have been marketed, and the mouey which was required, even after harvest,to purchase produce, has per- formed ite mission, and iu the regular course of trade bas found its way back into the banks from which it was drawn, ready for another operation of the eame kind at the proper time. Money concen- trates in this market, being the great fiaancial centre of the country, during the dull -eason, and from this point spreads all over the country during the active season. The banking movement of this city, daring each period, is exhibited in the tollowing table:— cry of New Yorx. 14.8 62,7 $5,141,220 974,850 889 P2637 . 122,192,322 13,270,403 ‘We have left a blenk tine in the table for this year, to be filled up in October. At present we leave the aggregates for the time to the investigasion of those | interested. With the fact before us, that in the ‘three first ycars the expansion of loaus reached the highest point in August, and the lowest point in October, it would be folly to suppose fur a mo uent NEW YORK HERALD, MONDAX AUGUST 18, Stocks Mushonge. Smith; 1,186 Aspia that we should e-cape a similar movemeat at th same time the present year. There is every reason to believe that a greater contraction will take place this year, between August and October, than last. ‘The expansion is now larger than ever before known, and the decrease in deposits iv likely to be larger during the early fall mouths. The crops in all parts of the country are reported to be unusually aband- ant, At the West the surplus grain crop of last year, added to the growth of the present year will give an immense volume ot produce to be moved. ‘The advancing prices at the clove of last year, in- duced many to hold, and they held too long. They were obliged to holdover, by the turn in the market; and the surplus of last year's crop in first bande is probably larger than ever before. This, with the enormous yield the present season, makes it parti cularly necesrary for the farmers to realize. Tue possibility of apy advance in prices of consequence is put to rest hy the great snpply, and the probabi. lity, therefore, is that the movements of grain at the Weet doring the approaching fall will be particu. lnly active, That prices will be remonerative, we have no doubt; ana that the anxiety to realize will be universal, is beyond a question. This must give greut activity to money, aud no lack for a rapid reduction in our bank deposits from this canse alone. ‘Lhe exportation of epecie from this port lest week | was comparetively limited, as will be ecea by the | aunexed tab.c: Farcers oF Brees rrom me Pout Steamer Fmeu, Havre, goid anu si.ver Steamer Atiantic, Liverpool, gol oo do w New Yor. $41,009 00 | ¢ do Schr H.
