comparison with other routes. After a careful examination of the reports of the several roads forming the line, via New York Central, we find the _ Coat of the two routes, as follows:— ‘From New York to Cincinnati, via New York Central, 885 miles, costing. weeeen ees, 964,109,222 ‘Brom New York to Cinei oat, via Pennsyiva- nia Central, 714 miles, « + 42,057,797 Total...... senescence ee + 22,051,425 —thowing to the New York Central route a fearful | difference in favor of the rente made complete by ‘the Allentown road. Arrangements for a close con- nection of the different roa is forming this line have recently been completed, extending from Cincin- ‘nati to Harrisburg, which only await the making of the Allentown link to extend the srrangement through to this city. We want the Allentewn road, and must have it; and from what we hear of the progress of the subscription list we have reason to be- lieve the road will be under contract within 60 days. This route cannot be superseded by any other short- er line, and if we may judge of its probable returns on the investment from its advantages in distance “and cost over any other route to the West, we cannot see how it can be otherwise than very profitable. The Pennsylvania Central is one of the best and most pros perons roads in the United States, paying at this time regular 8 per cent dividends annually. A just estimate of the business of the Pennsylvania Central , road may be obtained by the following comparison of its cost and revenue with that of the Erie road:— nnsyivenia cost ++ $18,483,489 Hoboarnings 18 h few York and Frie road coat. 00 aS ict carnings of 1886..,..... 2,627,318 The stock of the Pennsylvania road is at par, and ita, bonds are quoted at last dates in London at 10 per cent higher rate than those of the New York ‘Central. From the want of this Allentown link of ‘road an immense amount of travel is diverted from Cincinnati on the road to Cleveland, and thence to New York, either by the New York and Erie or the New York Central route. The great saving in dis- tance, together with the less cost, which will justi- fy a lower fare from Cincinnati to New York, must command a trafic that will ensure a profitable result to the stockholders of the Allentown road. These few facts, thus hastily thrown togethor, are sufficient to establish the importance of this great staple pro- duct of the country to all classes at home, and its value in our foreizn relations. The annexed statement exhibits the quantity and value of foreign dry goods entered at this port for consumption, for warehouse, and alao the withdraw- als from warehouse, during the week ending and in- cluding Thursdsy, August 14, 1866:— in the dry goods trade; and had not grossly exag- gerated reports been circulated in the country re- the presence of yellow fever in and about New York, there is no doubt but the business trans- acted would have been on some larger scale. We wish here to state, what is known to all physicians and tothe public within the city, that New York was never more healthy and free from disease than it is at present, there being no yellow fever whatever. Many merchants who have come on bave lingered at the watering places in the country. The season is advancing, and must soon become very active. The Western States, as well as the Southwest are well represented by merchants. The jobbers in ready made ciothing are doinga good business, sales for the extreme West and South being large. The crops in all directions, as regards corn, is said to have been improved by late rains, which baye been pretty general, and the yield, with few exceptions, will be larger than was expected. Wheat has been “a success’”almost over the entire country, and saved in excellent condition, and is of excellent quality ; while accounts received so far, regarding the growing cotton crop are favorable. Domestic goods have not become so active as was anticipated, owing to the past large imports of foreign goods with which the country has been pretty well crowded. Two large auction sales of foreign goods have been reported the present week, although that noticed last week, in French goods, prived quite satisfactory, but hardly up to the advance claimed to exist for similar goods in France, after adding costs and charges. ‘There has been more doing in the export trade of cotton piece goods, and chiefly to China. For the week ending the ®th of August inst., there were ex- ported 3,616 packages, of the value of $190,647, and of which $176,140 were for China. Heavy brown shirtings were very firm at 8c., with light supplies. Bleached goods of narrow and heavy grades were quite scarce and firm, and held at jc a jc. advance. Medium qualities ranged from 7c a%e. Fine goods were heavy. Drills were firm, but with limited stock; the market was not active. Browns sold at 8c., bleached at Sic. and blues at 9c. Osnaburgs were in good demand at full prices Corset jeans were in moderate request and prices unchanged. Canton flannel was duil and sales mo- derate. Denims were ee ae prices. Different makes ranged from 9j¢. to Stripes and ticks were firm, with moderate Printing cloths were steady, at full prices. delaines bave been in fair demand, at prices; flannels and blankets were in good at full prices, and good qualities of the latter an fast as produced. The market for foreign gcoda continues healthy, and the trade tolerably active. The reports from Man- chester, Leeds, &c., in England, and from the manufacturing districts of France, representing firm markets, tend to sustain prices here. The failures in the interior are trifling in number and amount, while the South pays up remarkably well, and collections at the West have also materially im- proved. Upon the whole, the state of trade looks quite favorable, and the autamn business promises to be large and satisfactory. When will meat get cheaper? For months we have been anxious to record a fallin the extraordi- nary price of beef and mutton, but we have begun almost to despair of ever seeing it down toa gea- sonable price. There was a very slight decline no- ticeable yesterday, but not enough to justify a poor man in indulging in such luxuries as butchers re- tail. Fish is also high, and but few varieties in. There is nothing that can be called cheap but the ever- lasting cod and halibut, that maintain about the same prices the year through. Those who like soft crabs can indulge in that luxury abundantly just now. Poultry and game is hardly quotable, there ia so little in market. The dealers have gotinto other employments, or are biding their time for the fall trade. Butter ischeaper. The abundant raina we have had recently have vastly improved the grasa crop, and hay will be most abundant this fall and winter. Orange cdunty is selling for 25c. and State for 20c. Eggs a:e six and seven for a shilling, with but little doing. It isa pleasure to turn tothe vegetable depart- ment, where produce is reasonable, at least. Cora is cheapening—so are tomatoes and potatoes, and 60 are @ number of other articles contained in our list. Look at it, and see how your teeth will water. The berries are nearly all running out, and peaches come in very slowly, and are very poor. It is diamal to think that this delicious fruit is to be scarce.
