Seventy thousand dollars worth of property was des- troyed by fire in the village of West Troy this morning. The fire broke out about 2 o’clock in the morning, wm the piles of lumber immediately adjoining Lamby’s carriage ectablighment, on Canal street, between Roches- ter etreet and tbe Erie Canal. From thence it spread wih Meconceivable rapidity to the buildings in the immediate vicinity. The following is a liet of the principal property destroyed :— Lamby’s carriage extabliehment and residence, owned by E. & P, Wiswell; Jobn Perrigo’s dwelling, Patrick Kelly’s very etable, the dwelling houses of Wm. Clements, Wm. Crowner, J. D. Lobdell and Mr. Condee, All the lumber ‘on the east side of the canal from Canal street to the ro- widence of Abraham Dyer, was destroyed. It was owned by Smith & Craig and Lee & Hall. Loss of the former fe about $75,000, and cf the latter $30,000, The lumber on the opposite eide’of the canal caught fire, but not more than $1,000 worth, belonging to Hall & Ogden, was deatroy- ed. The origin of the fire is unknown, but is supposed to ave been the work of an incendiary. The property is generally insured. Destructive Fire at Paterson, N. J. Parenson, N. J., August 2, 1856. The Condition of the Streets. reporter yesterday took a survey of the in the lower part of the city, from Chambers to the Battery. He found them, as a general , in & very fair condition, so far as noxious and unwholesome effluvias are concerned, though not by amy means clean. On the contrary, they sadly need sweeping, and cart loads of dirt might be from the streets on almost every block in the First, Second and Third wards. But dirt of iteelf, in this dry weather, is not absolutely un- healthy, provided it is unmiaed with vegetable or animal matter, and as there are but few dwellings im this part of the city, and comparatively little garbage and slops thrown into the streets, this may be set down at present as the most healthy portion of the city. There are, however, some prominent exceptions, which show that the general cleanli- pees is not owing to any diligence on the part of the Street Inspector, or Health Warden, or police, but arises from the scarcity of dwellings. Where there are any houses whose inmates are able to make the street filthy in front of their doors, there you will find it. Washington street, from Cortlandt street to the Battery, contains filth enough to infect 1 whole district. The Dutch dwellers in the lower par of that street seem to vie with each other to see which shall get up the nastiest prospect in front of their doors. Our reporter, after taking an impartial survey ofeach block, and viewing the whole line in all ita va rious aspects, utterly unable to say which Ha: had the best est’ prospect. "gach house had thrown all the refuse matter, elo; had into the street; and if one ty beat another, it was only because its letor was able to give dinner rs on both med with oa! eavtmact of of vegetables, in which cabbage leaves predominate, and corn husks, potato Reelings, ering be beans and egg shells form a subor- , and the whole id mass “ py —— nd stinks and fioata,’”’ in as nasty a pool of slimy liquid as can be uae this ‘ide of i merdsm, oF Rotterdam, or or 4 Dutch eettlement, with or without a dam. tn front of 51 Washington strest are two or three cart loads of various kinds of garbage, mixed with shavings and stra In none’ of No. 64 are three large heaps of filth, in the shape of decayed vegetables and mud. ‘The wide Pownce - iendin, to the rear of No, 73 isin @ most foul condition, and it is impossible to see how the Health Warden of that distce if he basa nose on his face, conld pass there without having his attention arrested by the nuisance. Front street, between Coentis slip and States treet, mene 1B 8 vy bad condition. Soalso is Water street, (rom Broad street to Whitehall. Pearl atreat, between Whitehall and State street, is etill worse. Even Cortlandt street, altho it emits no very unpleasant odors, yet is al bly dirty. There are heaps ot dirt lying in the gutter in frout of Nog. 25, 28 and id 30, and we we were in formed that no dirt had carted off the street for over two Bo There sve many other streets inasimilar condition to this, but ag was stated in the beginning, the most of the streets in the lower end of the city are Peni Fa with the exception at Wanhington street See PES e tt Henne eet id be af tended to at es the ordinances relative to throwing offal and slops in the streets should be strictly enforced, for it is from this source that nearly all the pestilential odors and noxious effluvias arise. Marine Court. Before Hon. Judge Maynard. LANDLORD AND TENANT CASE—WHAT'S IN A NUM- BER. Ava. 2—Browning vs. Lewis—The plaintiff claimed that the defendant was his tenant of certain premises, known as No. 50, 'n Hamersley street, and as such tenant, was indebted to him for two quarters’ rent, #225. Defendant denied being tenant, as set forth; and also denied the indebtedness for rent. The defence was, that the number of the premises was in reality 52, and not 50. The evidence was that the the premises were known as No. 50; that No. 60 had been over the door until within a short time; that the defendant had taken a lease of them as No, 50 three years since, and that he had since then called it No. 50 in his letters to the plaintiff The ‘ound for ear Judgment accordingly. i v8. —The etn isa Tee and as such a beer” to defendant.
