6 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Furpay, Aug. 1—6 P. M. ‘There is aothing new in the stock market. There was # fair amount of busineas in Erie, Central and Reading, but prices were not sustained, and the Beneral tendency was downward. At the first board New York Central Railroad fell off j per cent; Erie, Michigan Central, j. Ilinois bonds advanced } per cent; Chicago and Rock Island, j. Galena and Chicago closed firm at yesterday's prices. At the Becond board Erie declined } per cent, and closed heavy. These small fluctuations in the stock market fom day to day do not suit either party in the street. In the absence of any activity the bears have the advantage, but there is very little disposition to sell short at current prices. There are parties waiting ‘anxiously to sell, but they want the market to go up iret. There is at present a very poor prospect for either buyers or sellers. The Assistant Treasurer reports to day as follows: ae #113,902 08 Paid on disbursing Checks ‘The warrante entered at the Treasury Department, Washington, on the 29th of July, were as fol- tows: — 4 or redemption of Texas debt. 9. 135 61 28,853 la ‘The Marine Bank has declared a semi-annual divi- @end of four per cent; the St. Nicholas, three and a half per cent; the Lenox Fire Insurance Company five per cent; the Irving Fire Insurance Company, Beven per cent. The steamship Ericsson, from this port for Liver- pool to morrow (Saturday), will not take out any Bpecie. There has not been a large busicesa in ex- change for this packet, but the rates remain un- The following is a statement of the business at the Mint of the United States, Philadelphia, for the month of July:— Unsrrep States Mort, Puraperrima, Jerr, 1856. = $100,000 $260,000 355 259 89 275,000 00 909 15 ‘Total.. It is to weigh 72 grains, just two-thirds of the present cent, which is 108 grains. The annexed statement exhibits the quantity and value of foreign dry goods entered at this port for consumption, for warehouse, and also the withdraw- als from warehouse, during the week ending and in- cluding Thursday, July 31, 1856:— MovemzyT wv Formos Dey Goone, oo Quantuy. A good many merchants from Gistant States of the South and Southwest are making purchases for their fall trade. The importa- tious for the month of July, which ended yesterday, were larger than ever before made at this port for the same period. The duties, by the returns of the Assistant Treasurer, Mr. Cisco, for July, on account Of customs, amounted to $5,510,393 66, a large pro- portion of which was derived from the tariff on dry goods. Notwithstanding the heavy introduction of foreign goods prices are well supported, and some styles of etaple goods have an apward tendency, Owing in part to accounts of advanced views of manafacturers in Engiand and France, demanded by the high range of prices at which the raw mate rivls of cotton and wool have for some time ruled, and in part to the prospects of another year of good crops in this country, and the probability that there will continue a good demand for them in Europe at remunerative prices.’ ‘The corn crop may,and probably has been injured in certain localities by drought, but in the main, taking the whole country, with the recent general rains, and scarcely @ doubt exists, bat that we shall have an aversge crop. The wheat of the United Btates was probably never larger, of a better quality, or saved in a better condition. The new samples exhibited at the Corn Exchange are uniformly good; the berries large, sound and heavy. This year the great balk of the flour will be of good to extra qna- ity, and reduce the margin in prices between the higher and lower grades to one or two dollars per Whereas, during the past season, owing to quantity rated over the extra brands, cases ae much as $6 per barrel tween choice extra brands and low grades of com- mon State. This year the crops will do much to e@qvalize prices, and to give the people much better bread at fairer prices. The reports of the cotton crop—one of the moa Amportant staples in our exports, and always looked bo with interest by thove largely engaged in the dry the growing crop, it is expected to be fully equal the crop of the past year. The exports of cotton piece goods have been quite moderate. For the week ending the 26th July they embraced in value about $16,209. Of this sum Aus- tralia took over half, or $9,112. The remainder was divided between Brazil, Granada and Hayti. Brown sheetings have been sold for export, at 8c. for heavy, and at 7c. for light. The close was firm. Bleached goods were in better demand—advanced jc. a jc. for heavy qualities, while fine goods were dull- Drills were firm, and well sold up to stock for ex- port, at Sic. for bleachedjand 9{c. for blue, and holders were asking higher rates. Osnabargs were firm, with more doing. The changes in prices of other descriptions of domestic goods have not been of sufficient magnitude to require any detailed notice. The assortments of shawls are generally opened and very complete. Foreign goods are well sustained, particularly woollen fabrics. French staple goods are in steady demand, but without change of im. portance in prices. It is said that our market for oreign goods is lower than that of Europe, and that some articles could be returned to that country and old at a profit. This, if true, proves that they have been crowded upon us faster than the demand thus far has justified. Should the imports ever hold up it is likely they would, after a little time, more nearly approximate foreign prices. The London Bankers’ Circular, of July 12, con- tains.the following remarks relative to the money market and the movements of bullion:— The movements of bullion have again interrupted that repose which so many anticipated had would result from the ftermination of war and the arrivals of gold from Aus- tralia, We cautioned our readersas: ‘1 time since against placing to» much confidence in the were arrivals of the Precious metals into this country, from the fact that they we sent here as the centre of distribution to various . 1s of the continent of Europe, into countries where, a3 a Egiand, gold was not @ natural production, and where e possession of it can only be secured by the commer- be and fnaacial operations betweea one country and ap- otner. These operations have now become so rapid in their influence, Srongh tolegraphic despatches and steam communication, that the foreign exchanges do not accurately indicate the movement of the pre- cious metals, and those who piace implicit re- ljiance upon them will frequently find themselves deceived. it bas several times occurred during the last twelve months, that while the exchanges between this —, ae France have tat pv Fre - E France een importing ¢ quantities of gol Unis side of the water: and it sometimes happens that this on in junction with an unfavorable es. returns of the Bank of France up to Thursday last show that considerable pur- chases of the precieus metals have been made during the mouth by that establishment, though not to the extent of the previous month, and yet there is a diminution of £2,172,373 im the amount of specie in reserve, of which £1,116,133 decrease is in the central establishment in Paris.” This fact, in all probability, became known » the Directors of the Bank of England at their sitti Thursday, and if so, i was suificient to caution t ie against apy reduction in the rate of discount. Another fact also has contributed to the same result, that the lar; ree a of gold from the United States, while exch: 8 with, this country admit only of a very small profit, has been gent bither for the purchase of silver and French Rentes. Such circumstances a3 these will — continue to cause frequent fluctuations in tae London money market, and prevent that great fali in its value which some have anticipated: and as our credit and monctary system: are immediately ailected by these fluctuations, they wil! be felt much more acutely than ia those countries where credit is based upou a more ex tended foundation. We have before stated our opinion that we can retain only a portion of the precious metals which arrive in this country, and that that portiou will be constantly fluctuating according to hod financial and commercial transactions with other nation: The returns of the Bank of England tothe 5th instant, fully prove the truth of these remarks, by a decrease of £462,816 in the amount of spec: nd as an active de- mand for export lias continued since the date of this re- turn, the probability is that the next return of the bank will show a further diminution. From these results it venre that neither during an abundance nor a searcity gold, does our present monetary system secure us ags inst sudden and constant fi ictuations. Potatoes look very fine, notwithstanding the late drought, and are selling for from $2 25 to $2.75 per barrel. Green corn is beginnmg to be baundant, though it is not so good as it should be in consequenee of the want of rain. Moreover, the late showers have hardly touched some portions of New Jersey and Long Island, much to the detri- ment of the crops. Tomatoes come in slowly, and are dear for the season. The fruit in market is very nice; currents and gooseberries are pretty nearly finished, and all the berries will soon be among the things that were; musk and water me- Inns are good. but dear. Retail dealers complain that there are not enough of berries coming to this market to supply the demand. Jerseymen make their fortune off this city, We do not put peaches in our list as they are hardly quotable yet. This will be a very poor peach year. Butter is rising in price, and so areeggs.
