6 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. TavrspaY, July 31-6 P. M. ‘The stock market continues dull, but not so much depressed. Occasionally a little lite is visible in some leading stock, but it is only a temporary mat- ter, and it soon relapses again. Erie Riilroad stock has within the past day or two revived a little, and shows signs of renewed activity, but it appears to be wanting in strength. All the other railroad stocks have, once in a while, a spasmodic touch, and look for the moment as though there was goipg to be at last a strong natural movement, but after two or three efforts all is over, and prices fall back again to the starting point. At the first board to day Erie Railroad advanced } per cent; Galena and Chi- ago, i}; Cleveland and Toledo, }. Michigan South- ern Railroad declined 4 per cent; Cumberland, $; Reading and New York Central opened and closed without change, but with moderate sales. There is a strong bull party in Erie, and that appears to be the only stock on the list in which there is a party for either an inflation or depression. Large lots of Erie are held by certain brokers for a rise, and the probability is that they will get up another. move- ment. The tendency of prices to-day was upwards, and as there are more buyers than sellers, and some very heavy buyers waiting for a good opportunity to come in, the chances are decidedly in favor of higher prices at a not distant day. It is, however, possible, that in the meantime lower rates may rule. In the present state of finances it may not be con- sidered advisable to come in at prices now current, ‘and buyers may wait for a decline. After the adjournment of the Board the following sales of stocks and bonds were made at auction, by A. HL Nicolay:— srgge mam Oat che hat 260" ns. Y. and New Haven R. jo, Sixth Avenue R. R x do. do, U. do. do. int. added 82 do. 69 Hanover Fire lusurance Co. do. New Amsterdam Insurance do. Equitable Fire lusurance Co ‘The long Island Bank has declared a semi-annual dividend of five per cent. The Manhattan Company @ semi-annual dividend of five per cent. At the second board the amount of business trans- acted waa unusually limited. Michigan Southern advanced j per cent. New York Central R. R. sold at 884 per cent, dividend off. After the board, stocks generally were a little lower, but there was no stock pressing for sale. ‘The Southern Michigan Railroad Company earned about $14,000 more in the first two weeks of July this year than in the same weeks last year. The earnings of the Great Western (Canada) Railroad for the week ending July 25, were $40,688 34, against $29,887 31 for the same week last year. The total receipts from February 1, this year, were $1,375,004 81, against $973,961 44 for the same time last year. The Milwaukie American, of the 28th inst., gives the following comparative movement of wheat at that port:— 1855. 1856. Received for the week. 4,052 12,043 Shippec forjtwo weeks 11,598 151,220 Shipped for the season +. 804,127 855,543 ‘Thus, it willbe seen ‘that although one month ‘ago we were over 200,000 bushels behind last year in shipment, we still are at the present date nearly ap to last year’s figures, and shall pass them before the first of September. We have glorious news from all parts of Wisconsin regarding the great abun- dance and extraordinary excellence of the ingather- ing crops. There are no exceptions and no condi- dions—the thing is settled. The winter wheat, now nearly all secured in good condition, without a drop of rain, is both heavy and excellent. The berry is clean, clear, plump and flinty. We have never known it exceeded. Within the next two weeks the first of it will come to market, though the bulk will not begin to go forward until the first of September. The expenses of operating the road have not been diminished the past year, though the price of fuel has been materially lessened and a great saving made in oil. The pay roll has been increased $4,- 888 42, from the necessity of additional labor and the demand for increased wages. This, with the dis- bursements of an extraordinary character, including new ircn, has increased the expenditures $13,166 31 over that of the previous year. There have been added to the equipments during the same period new cars, the cost of which is $10,- 234 06, and motive power $7,000, and the extraor- dinary repairs of the road have amounted to $12,- 704 90. The debt of the company is...... Actual value of assets that may properly b deducted from the indebtedness... Balance of actual debt... s+ eee ee B648,969 85 The company has a further liability in bonds issued to the Norwich and New London Steamboat Company of $50,000, for which that company has given ample security, payable one half in 1857, and the balance in 1858, with semi-annual interest. The company is further liable for a debt of Wel- come Farnum for $62,000, and for which it holds an equal amount of the stock of the Providence and Worcester Railroad Company. The company has prepared, but not issued, $150,000 of seven per cent bonds, which the Board had hoped before this time to sell, and from the pro- ceeds of the same restore the earnings heretofore used in the redemption of debt and construction, and pay the scrip issued in July last for the dividend then declared; but the state of the money market has not been such as to enable them to do so. The increase of business the past year on the through trains running in connection with the steamboats between New York and Boston, and the advance in the fares and prices of freight generally, gives good hope that the company will soon m- pidly advance its net receipts to a point which will enable them to resume cash dividends on the stock. These roads, inc’ the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, wore first n a through the country they traverse, were built, always bave beep firtt in business and tpcome, will bold that porition as long as commerce and emigra tion pursue present course between the Fest an! Of the roads whove earnings per mile per month are given above, cach bas a prosperous future, and the ehare and bondholders may confidently look forwar! to the time when the earnings of each, per mile per month will approach the best prevent annual average of the Ga Jena and Chicago Union Railroad. In our advertising columns will be found the programme of the Allentown Railroad—a road which is proposed to fill the only interval now existing in an air line commanication from New York to the West. It is believed to be to New York the most important forty miles of road yet unbuilt on the map of the United States. Forty miles taken out of the Erie canal would make a hardly more impor. tant gap in our Northwestern communication than the absence of the road now projected makes in our transit to the cities of Cincinnati, St. Louis, Cleve- land, Chicago, and all their connections and depen- dencies. The Allentown Railroad built, and we shall be 128 miles*nearer to Cincinnati; 183 miles nearer to St. Louis; 72 miles nearer to Cleveland, and 72 miles nearer to Chicago than by the nearest of the routes now travelled. We shall have the means of sending a locked car, loaded with goods, direct from Jersey City to at least two points on the Missouri river, in the State of Iowa, (on the roads now in process of construction,) and to all intermediate points of importance. ‘We shail be able to send a loaded car from Jersey City direct to Baltimore without transhipment or delay. It is a road, however, that will be available atall seasona of the year, and give New York in mid winter a accessible ap avenue for her Western ‘and Sonthern trade as is now possessed by Balti- more ot Philadelphia. The enterprise is in the hands of men who will push it toa successful ter- mination at an early day, if the merchants and me- chanics of this great centre of trade will respond to NEW YORK HERALD, FRIDAY, AUGUST 1, 1856. the extent of their individual interests towards the construction of this important road. We would, therefore, call their especial attention to the details of cost and probable revenue, which will be found in another column of this morning's impression.
