6 NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY, JULY 31, 1856. Se gpI ory mere eS “eae UE AR RINTHE e NRS PS Ty CT a Ca ~M\ eRni cemRAR ES OT pee yrererT Ey ae: SALES AT A CTION. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKED Wepnespay, July 30—6 P. M. The intolerable hot weather hus scattered stock speculators. The operations at the board of bro- kers, therefore, continue limited. In two or three stocks operators continue to make a very respecta- ole show of business, and contrive to keep prices pretty steady. At the first board to-day Mlinois Central bonds advanced } per cent; Wisconsin Lake Shore, 1; Reading, 3; Iinois Central Railroad, }. La Crosse and Milwaukie Railroad sold this morning at 714 per cent, buyer 60 days. Galena and Chicago Sold to-day at 1074 per cent, ex-dividend. In Read- ing there was a little more activity, at the improve- ment in prices. Cleveland and Toledo closed at a slight advance on the opening. Railroad bonds were not operated in to any extent. Only a few small lots of certain classes changed hands, All the first mortgage issues are in strong hands, and nothing short of prices considerably above those now ruling will bring them out. State stocks are neglected. Bank stocks are occasionally sold in small lots, but money is so abundant that first class securities are not pressing for sale. The accumula- tion of capital makes such investments more desira- ble, and as the supply of those securities decreases from the demand for permanent investment, their market value must increase. Occasionally a new issue of railroad bonds, to a small amount, appears on the market, but not to an extent corresponding at all with the absorption. Capitalists on both sides of the Atlantic are seeking our first class first mortgage railroad bonds, and without large supplies the de- mand cannot be satisfied. Compared with the means for holding, the actual total quantity in existence is @ mere bagatelle. We do not see why there should not be a steady improvement in the market value of all our best issues of railroad bonds. Railroad stocks must always fluctuate more or less. So long as they are the football of speculators, so long will the best of them run up and down, as the bulls and the bears get the ascendancy. Speculators who are independent of cliques have but one course to pursue, and by pursuing that perseveringly they cannot very well help making money. The true plan is to sell the poor stocks and bay the good ones. To sell New York Central and bny Erie, and so on through the list. By being short of one class and long of auother, time will bring about most satisfactory results. The low priced Western railroad stocks have a wide margin for im- provement, and most any of them are, beyond a doubt, good purchases at present prices. Western railroad stocks generally are highly prodactive aud have a good future, but not so with the old in- fisted railroad stocks of the East; and while one should attract investment, the other sheuld at least be avoid- ed. The tormer earn much larger dividends than they pay, while the latter pay much larger dividends than they earn. ‘The semi-annual interest on the second mortgage bonds, tue Dover Extension bonds and the bonds of 1861 of the New York and Harlem Railroad Company, will be paid on the Ist of August, at the office of the Treasurer, 33 Pine street, rear building. The Assistant Treasurer reports today a3 fol ows: — Paid om Treasury account. Nicolay's regular semi-weekly auction sale of stocks and bonds will take place to-morrow, (Thursday,) at balf-past 12 o'clock, at the Mer- chants’ Exchange. At the second board the market opened and closed heavy. Erie fell off 4 per cont; New York Central, }; Cleveland and Toledo,j Reading ad- vanced j per cent, with pretty large sales. Erie was offered at 61) per ceat after the board. The steamship Niagara, from Boston for Liver pool, today, (Wednesday,) carried out $371,332 in specie. This was leas than expected. The steam- ship Ertesson, from this port for Liverpool, on Satur- day, will not take out any specie. The next ship- ment of any consequence will be from this port, on Wednesday next, by the Persia. We learn by a private despatch from Portland, that the York and Cumberiand Railroad was sold to-day for the sum of $120,000to s party represented by F. 0. J. Smith, Esq. The injunction against the sale of this road was dissolved by the coart on the ground that there was no foundation for an in- junction. The Bank of the Republic has declared a semi- annual dividend of five percent. The Brooklyn and Jamaica Railroad Company, semi-annual dividead of four per cent. The Ocean Bank, a semi-annual dividend of three and a half per cent.
