eee. eae sree —— ————eo aoe EEn ni 0 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Saruppay, July 26—6 P. M. ‘Tee'dtock market was very much depressed atthe opening this morning, and continued so to the close. "Phere were large sales, at gradually receding prices. ‘All the leading stocks were freely offered. At the firat board Missouri 6’s declined 4 per cent; Illinois Central Bonds, }; Cumberland, j; Nicaragua Tran- sit, 3; New York Central Railroad, }; Erie, §; Michigan Central, }; Reading, 3; Ulinois Central Railroad, ]; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 4; Cleveland and Toledo, 3; Panama, 3; Chicago and Rock Island, }, Michigan Southern, 3. It appears by this that the decline was general. Railroad bonds were well sustained, but the transactions were limited. New York Central, Erie, Reading, and Cleveland and Toledo, were the most operated in at the board, and they all closed with a downward tendency, The steamship Fulton, from this port for South- ampton and Havre, to-day, carried out $687,257, principally ingold coin. This makes the total spe- cie shipment for the week about two millions of dollars. The steamship Illinois is on her way to this port from Aspinwall, with $1,650,000, being the first semi-monthly shipments from California in July. The next bank returns will, it is estimated, show a decrease in the specie reserve of about one anda half million of dollars The shipments and payments into the sab treasury, over disbursements, during the present week amount to more than two and a half millions of dol- lars. The art of typography bas aided many an ase to display bis innate qualities. ‘our paper of Wednesday, for in stance, has enabled the Treasury authorities to exbibi their natural failings, in the shape of a statement of popu lation and wewth. ‘In that table you find the compara tive population and weaith in New York and Pennsylva nia stated to be:— Popndation. Wealth. New York... 3,470,059 $1,364,154,625 Pennsy ivania, + 2,642,960 1081,731,808 —which figures give to New York.$%96, and to Penn sylvania $405, for each inbabitant. From this we jearn, for the first time in our experience that Penasyiva nia, an agricultural and mining State, is richer, per capita, = the great agricultural, commercial and manulactur State of New York. this or is itiiction? A few figures will show; and henc quote the census retarns of 1860. In that year the figures stood thus:— ‘Population. Wealth 3,097,394 2811784 New York... Pennsylvania 500, which ga’ New York $231, and to Pennsylvania relatively. Thus it appears that individuals (n New York—and that within five years—have increased their ‘wealth from $231 to $396; and in Pennsylvania, from $216 to $405. But who believes all this, either positively or relatively? Nor have we to go fur to controvert the state ment, since the latest State documents give it emphati cally’ & negative, The actual position of these Stator, according to the documents for 1555, is, positively Now York, $1,402,450,064; and Pennsylvania, $651, and, Felatively, Now York $404, Pennsylvania 8 0. ‘6 much for the peop pig My etween New York and Pennsylvania. Hut we do not believe that Penusylvania bas within 200,000 of the population given in the freasury table; and in such care the per capita would be greater ‘She table, however, contains other biuaders, which will be seem by the following comparisons; — fecording to veaaury Return 1304; According to State Aer nts California. Georgia... « Khoae Island, . ‘Tevpessee Vermont. This table alro gives to Minnesota a population of 65.0» ‘aod wealth to the amount of $20,000 009, or $307 to ew % wnhabitant; while to Utah, with 39,000, it gives oniy H.250,! 000, or $109 to each inhabitant. Truly matters most be ata discount with the Saints. To New Mexico, with 63,500, Te Fo gives $7,250,000, but to Uregon, with 26,000," $7,77: to Washington, with ' only 6,300, it gives $1, 0 0 How these calculations have been elaborated | '« beyond oar comprehension. There must be, sacerding. to these figures, some essential dif. ference in the circumstances of our citizens in the various Territories; and hence wewould ask of the Treasury Department an explanation, which would be highly int» resting, not only to ourselves, but to all seeking bomes in the wilderness, If the prototype of this table, compiled by the present writer, and publismed in the Hexain some weeks ag», bad been more closely copied, the results would have been more in consopance with the real state of matters.
