NEW YORE HERALD. SATURDAY, JULY 19, 1856. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Fewar, July 16—¢ P. M. ‘The stock market is depressed to some extent. ‘The het weather has without doubt some influence in diluting prices. It is melting down almost every- thing else, amd we' do not see why stocks should escape. There are other and more permasent causes vitgjat the decline, and more sellers than we have -@ long time. Erie and Reading were sold in large lots, both for cash and on time. The sales of Michigan Southern were somewhat larger than usual. The burning of the steamboat Northern Indi anayen Lake Erie is undoubtedly the canse of the largé sales of stock and a portion of the decline. Illinois Railroad bonds are lower to-day, but the salee-were not large. About two hundred shares of ‘the stock eold at the first board, at a decline. We notice the sale of fifty shares Milwaukie and La Crosse Railroad stock, at the first board to-day, at 70 per cent, buyer thirty days. This isthe first public sale of this stock in this market. During the past month there have been a good many private specula- tions, and sales have frequently been made at 70 per cent, cash. The earnings of this company have been greater, on the same length ¢f road, than any other company ever realized in the Western States in the same length of time. The road was opened in January, 1856. In that month the earnings were of course very small, but every month since has shown an increase, so that the total receipts for the first six months, on only abut fifty-one miles of the road, were upwaras of one hundred and eighty thou- sand dollars. In July—the present month—the earnings are likely to be larger than in June, and it is estimated that the total receipts for the year end- ing ‘December 31, 1856, will range between five and six hundred thousand dollars. This, on a cost of only about one and a half million of dollars, is most extraordinary. Calculating one-half of the earnings for operating expenses and we have say $250,000 to pay interest on $500,000 of debt and dividends on $1,000,000 of stock. This would be equal to tweaty per cent the first year, on a short and unfinished road. Such a stock should sell for more than seventy per cent. At the second board the market was better. Erie advanced } per cent; New York Central, }; Reading, ¢. After the board prices advanced another frac- tion, bat the improvement was partially lost before the close. There was a decided upward movement in Resding, with large sales. Up to the close of business today the engage- ments of specie for shipment by the steamship Bal- tic, from this port for Liverpool to-morrow, (Satar- day), amounted to $500,000, of which $100,000 was silver. The above aggregate will probably be in- creased. The Mlinois Central Railroad Company are about issuing certificates or scrip for $900,000, in sums of $500 and $1,000, bearing interest at the rate of 7 per cent per annum, the principal redeemabie on the 1éth of January, 1858. These certificates are issued in anticipation of the amount to be received for 30,000 shares of stock, which are now represented ‘gen, ond which have, from exposure, lost much of that of Chanquinola. The official information re ceived is very condensed and brief, but establishes certain points which show beyond question that the company possesses goal workable coal mines. ‘The locality at which the works will be fixed is of course not yet determined, as many more beds have yet to be examined; bat Professor ‘Manroas inclines more to the Ubanquinola coal than the other, and will probably recommend that point as the best, unless he should find other beds, of equally good quality, in # location which should suit him better. Thies Chanquinola coal ia the first which was discovered by Mr. Morel, some years since, and it has always been the favorite point with the projectors of this enterprise for establishing the works, The Chanquinola is double the size, nearly, of the Chagres river, and this bed of coal iv about three-quarters of a mile from the river, and as far as examined shows about fifteen feet of thick ness, thirteen feet of which is pare coal. Coal could be brought down to the shippiag point in « few hours, as soon as the arrangements of the com als from warehouse, during the week ending and in- cluding Thureday, July 17, 1856:— Movaamrt wv Foxman Ver Goons. Consumpoon, $310,914 ‘Value put on the market during the week... $3,723, 986 The inactivity usual at this season of the year, noticed in our last, still continues. The importations +till continue large, and the stocks now held by .Obbers are large and very complete in the variety of assortments. The hotels contain a large number of country merchants, but owing to the excessive heat of the weather many of them pass on to cooler retreats to the North and Eastward, deferring to make purchases until their return from the watering places. The wholesale clothing houses have been the most employed in getting in stocks and in mak- ing more or less sales to dealers from the distant trade of the West and South. Accounts from Wis- consin and other grain growing Western States represent times to be hard and money scarce. In many of the towns discounts on loans ranged from 2ha3 per centa month. The consequences are that a good many failures have been reported in that direction. The country at large, however, is pros- perous, and the crops of grain, cotton, &c., with some exceptions, are quite promising. The charac- ter of the wheat, as a general thing, will prove of a superior quality. In Virginia and other Southern States the crop has been gathered, and is selling in this market at $1 67 for red, and $1 70 for fair white, The harvest is in rapid progress in the middle States, and the berries are ripening fast in the Genessee Valley, and promise this year to be saved in good condition. It is probable that this season we shall have more good flour, and less inferior or commen, than we had last year, and less specula- tion; and the dry goods trade with tne West pro- mises to be more healthy for the future, if not so large. Reports from Manchester, by the Niagara, represent an improved trade at firmer prices. There is a prospect that staple goods may rule higher during the fall trade. Be this as it may, no one anticipates that they are to be any lower. The jobbers chiefly engaged in the Southern trade are in the expectation of a heavy business from that direction. The supply of cotton from the last crop was the largest in the history of the country, and realized good prices. The effect has been to make money plentier at the South, but it has also en- hanced the prices of improved lands and labor to such an extent as to render the profits from newly established plantations much less. The capacity or ability of the people to consume goods, however, bas been greatly advanced. This trade is becoming more divided in this direction. It is more the cus- tom for New York jobbing houses to establish branches in Charleston, Savannah and New Or 22,413 packages against 14,526 for the same time the past year. Strawber- ries und cherries have run cut, but their place is supplied by other fruit. Grapes promise to be abundant but not very good. Apples and pears also are very poor and dear; they should not be eaten for a month at least. ‘There are no peaches in market yet, and dealers say there will be very lew this season. ‘Vegetables are tolerably cheap.
