NEW YORK HERALD, SATURDAY, JULY 12, 1856. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Frupay, July M6 P. M. ‘The stock market was a little more active at the opeaing his morning, All the leading railroad stocks were in demaad, but prices were unsettled, and closed with a downward tendency. State stocks and railroad bonds ‘were quite buoyant. Illinols Centra! bonds were firm at ‘94 percent. Northern Indiana Goshen bouds sold at 894, which is ap advance of 13¢ per cent since the previous eale. Michigan Southorn Sinking Fund bonds were held at 68 per cent. All classes of Erie bonds are steadily ad- vancing. First class first mortgage railroad bonds are destined to touch much higher points. The abundance of money in the principal markets of Europe will affect the ‘value of these securities more favorably and more rapidly than any others on this side of the Atlantic, The inquiry for American stocks in London is on the increase, and Orders have been received for the first mortgage bonds of ell our leading Western railroad companies, the fulfilment Of which has already put up prices several per cent. At the first board to-day Illinois Central bonds advanced 3; per cent; Northern Indiana tirst mortgage Goshen bonds, 134; Erie bonds, 1871, 34. Canton Company went up 4 per cent; Iinois Central Railroad, {. New York Geutral Bailroad declined X per cent; Chicagoand Rock Island, 34, and Reading, 4{. The movement in Erie was to some extent, without change in prices. It opened and closed @t 64% per cent. There was one sale of 1,000 shares at 4% per cent, buyer four months. The large receipts of the road, the demand from Europe, and the large purchases on domestic account, are considered by hheiders reasons enough why higher prices should rule; (but they lose sight of the fact that every advance in mar- et value gives early purchasers a greater profit, and therefore the greater probability of their realizing. New ‘buyers would mot be so abundant at higher points and m the absence of dividends. The interest account is unning against the stock. Waare among those who think that at no very remote period Erie Railroad stock ‘will be worth much more than it is now selling for; but fim the meantime movements inthe money market may depress the current value of that and every other stock om the list. The sudden and serious fluctuations in value Ihave learned operators te realize good profits when they ould, and turns are frequently made, particularly by speculators, for a rise. At the second board the market was decidedly better. Erie Railroad advanced 9, per cent; New York Central, 36; Canton Company, 3;; Reading, 3;; Michigan Central, 3; Wiinois Central bonds, 3;; Llinois Central etock, %; ‘Cleveland and Teledo, i. After the board higher prices ruled, and an active demand existed for stocks. ‘The steamship Hermann, from this port for Southamp. ton and Bremen, on Saturday, will take out about $350,- 060 in gold. ‘The Assistant Treasurer reports (0-day as follows:— nate 6,557,066 29 14,078 65 ‘The receipts include $60,000 from Chicago, and $50,000 from the bint. By reference to a table in the late report of the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad Company, it will be seen that, for the year ending May 1, 1852, that company had sixty- ‘two miles of road in operation, and their earnings for the year were $177,928, and they made a dividend of fifteen percent. The LaCrosse and Milwaukie Railroad Com- paay have bad in operation, from 1st January to 23d April ‘Ghty-one miles, and from 23d April .to Ist July sixty-one miles of road, and their earnings for six months only amounted to $180,! ‘The Republic Fire Insurance Company have declared a semi-annual dividend of three and a balf percent. The Beekman Insurance Company, a semi-annual dividend of ‘eight per cent. The Ohio Life and Trust Company, a Semi annual dividend of four per cent. The Indianapolis and Cincinnati Railroad, a semi-annual dividend of four per cont, payable to the Eastern stockholders on the 25th (nstant, at the cffice of the Ohio Life and Trust Company. ‘The Norwich aud Worcester Railroad, a semi-annual divi- dend of two per cent, payable in ¢crip on the 21st inst. ‘The Brooklyn City Railroad Company, a semi-annual! diyi- dend of four per cent. The Bank for Savings, Bleecker ‘street, has declared the usual interest dividend, at the rate of Give per cent per annum, on all sums under $600, and at the rate of four per cent on larger sums. ‘The steamship Africa, at this port from Liverpool, ‘brings four days later intelligence. In a financial an commercial point of view, it is highly favorable and satis- factory. The Bank of England has reduced the rate of (uterest ane balf per cent, and it is expected that a fur- ber reduction of one-half will soon follow. The Bank's ‘bullion shows an increase of £350,173 in one week. Con- eols show an improvement of \ to per cent, And an easier money marketis reported. The cetton market was active and firm at full prices. In the better qualities a slight advance bad been realized. A much healthier tone was apparent in the mapulacturing districts. Bread- stuffs were in active demand, at an improvement in prices. Flour was from one to two shillings better. Ba- ’ Circular says there was an active demand for American Securities, without change ip prices. A meeting of the stockholders of the Accessory Tran- et Company is called for the 15th inst., at 1 o'clock, at the office of S F Tracy, 263, Broadway. A full attend. ‘ance ia desirable, as very important matters will be pre- eevted for consideration. A letter, dated at Toledo, yesterday, reports the busi cas of the Wabash Valley road as fast increasing. At (present 202 miles of the road are open from Toledo to Latayette, The letter says: —‘A very handsome train of twenty one loaded cars came in this morning, and thirty- three care yesterday morning.'’ This road will be an im. (portant feeder to the Cleveland and Tolodo. both for pas- eengers and freighting business. ‘The receipts of the Stosington Railroad Company in June were — Pr mh 1866, - $12,976 OF sine 1866, 12,085 77 8021 63 Increase... --+ $920 27 = Dec.. $196 76 The receipts of gold at this port from California ia each @0nth of the past two years, according to the steamers’ Aaaifests, are as annexed — Recenrs oF Cauirorsis Goww at tue Port oF Key Tost 2. 82 ‘vipa each year shows a regularity in remittances hardly equalled in any other article of commerce, The first @emi-monthiy remittance in the new yoar is nearly due ‘at this port, and we have no doubt it will be considerably larger tian that received about the eame time last year. Io Jaly, 1856, the semi monthly receipts averaged only @eventeen bundred thoueand dollars. We shall without doubt, make a better beginaing than that this year ‘The receipts at tide-water of the principal articles of ‘The Secretary of State of Wisconsin reporte on the Ist of July the actual amount in the State —— + $20,440 00 151 21 ’ 56 98 22,416 00 19 = tyvided ansong the several fms ae follows = Racapereramon oF Batascm, Jone 90, 1886. Coneral es 926, 8 ‘The cars are now runaing oa the Detroit and Milwaukie raiiroad to Corunna, 78 miles from Detroit, or nearly one-half of the dustance toGrand Havea. The road is well built, and is doing a large local trade. It will be opened to Grand Haven in the course ofanother year. The com pany has secured all the funds it requires, and its pro. gress is now merely dependent upon the weather, This road will place Milwaukie on the air line route to New York. The distance from Detrolt to Grand Haven can be made in seven hours, as the distance is only 197 miles. ‘The annoxed statement exhibits the quantity and value of foreign dry goods entered at this port for consump tion, for warehouse, and also the withdrawals from ware- house, during the week ending and including Thursday, July 10, 1856:— Movements iv Forman Day Goovs. Entered for Consumption. Manufactures of woot cotton Houses engaged ia the dry goods trade are preparing ‘and looking forward to the commencement of an active falltrade. Already, some merchants from the distant South and Southwest are here looking about with a view to making ultimate purchases and shipments. The stock and assortments were never more inviting, and are cal- culated to meet the taste and views of the most fastidious buyers. Prices of staple goods, however, are likely to rule at full prices, and approximate more nearly to the enhanced value’of raw materials. The difficulty of mak- ing full collections at the northwest still continues, and some houses here whose trade has hitherto laid chiefly in that direction, have found difficulty in getting on with- out them. The religio-political paper of this city, which attends to failures with as much assiduity as Meriam does the weather, and with about equal accuracy, has an- nounced the failure of a dry goods jobbing house of this city, but gives no particulars. We do not expect much revival in the dry goods trade till about the first of August. ‘The reports from all parts of the country, with few ex- ceptions, speak fuvorably of the growing crops, though as regards cotton and Indian corn, they are more back- ward than usual. The clothing houses are very busy getting in stocks suitable for the fall and winter, which are usually pur- chased by the distant trade in the latter part of July, and through the montk of August and early part of Sep- tember. Large quantities of goods are now distributed over rail- roads and by express pretty much throughout the year, and especially light and fancy descriptions, so that not so much business is crowded into a single period as former- ly, im proportion to population. The rapid growth of the country is evinced by the enormous exports and imports for the past year, which were greater than ever before known in the history ofthe country. The exports for the fixcal year from June 30, 1855, to June 20, 1856, official and estimated, amounted to the large sum of about $200,000,000, and the importy to about $206,000,000 for the same period. New York is every year on the increase in the impor- tation of foreign goods, calling into existence a greater number of firms to transact it. The excess of importations at this port for the last fiscal year over that preceding , amounted to abeut $21,000,000. Among the exports American manufactured cotton goods formed a cousiderable item. Since the Ist of January to Ist of July, 1856, we Lave exported from this port uo less than 22,467 packages, against 18,299 for the same period last year; and 21 629 packages were exported from Boston for the same period, against 14,484 last year. Last year The domesticfconsumption of raw cotton reached about 600,000 bales. This year, it is supposed that we shall require not less than 700,000 bales, which, at $45 per bale, will amount to $91,500,000, With the continuance of peace over the world, the time is not far distant when the United States will require 1,000,000 bales of cotton, and England 2,000,000 bales to meet the consumption, bo:h domestic and foreign. The export trade for the past week has been steady, but not active. Brown sheetings and shirtings were in good supply and quiet at 80. for heavy and 7c. for light. Bleached do. were unchang- ed. Drills were without change, with light sales. Thore was some better enquiry for cloths, and also for satinets, tweeds and jeans. Lindseys were dull and medium quali- ties lower. Flannels and blankets were firm. Foreign dry goods Lave undergove no change suficient to require any notice a detail. RETAIL PRICE OF PRODUCE IN WASHINGTON MARKET. We are weary of complaining of the high price of meat, ‘and all we can do is to advise our readers to avoid it, and eat vegetables instead. To make matters worse, fish has taken a start, and is scarce and high. Thesupply of poultry is very scant, and prices are high, as will be seen by the quotations. It is a relief to speak of the vegetable market, where lower prices rule, and all the products of the farm and garden are most abundant. Potatoes bave fallen greatly in price. Last week they were quoted at a high figure, but the abundant supplies of new potatoes from Norfolk and§Long Island have run the market down, to the discomfiture of sellers and the profit of buyers. Bermudas are still high. Green corn has made its appearance in small quantities, and of course at dear rates. This summer has been almost too wet for afullcrop. Onions, leaks, squarshes and all young sum- mer vegetables are coming in finely, Tomatoes are cheapening, ditto green peas. Fruit is plentiful, berries especially so. There area few peaches in market, but as yet theyare hardly quota. ble, This will be a poor peach year, according to all ac- counts. Butter is reasonably low, but eggs are high.
