Vol. 3. ’ 38 was Mr. Irving's original intention to confine hie Life of Washington to three volumes, As was to he expected, both from the character of the sub- ject and of the biographer, he now finds that this Jabor of love will take 2 wider expansion. We are aejoiced that Mr. Irving did not hold himself bound fo the plan of the publishers, and it is creditable to these gentlemen that they did not insist oa their w original limitation. However a departure from it may interfere, with the more general circulation of the work, it will nuquestionably give it a higher historical value. This biography is not only the follest and most satisfactory that has as yet been “published of “the Father of his country,” but it is also the most complete and faithful picture that has been presented to us of the Revolution and of Heleadmg actors. The third volume comprises the -. perivl embraced between the years 1777 and 1779, and includes some of the most stirring and impor tant events in Washington’s career. From the short space of time which it covers, it will be seen that Mr. Irving’s task promises to extend indefinite- dy, and that he himself cannot asyet tell to what a Point it may carry him. So long as this copious- mess of detail does not affect the clearness and vigor ef the narative, we are far from being disposed to feult vy b it. Continued in the same conscien- tious and pains taking epirit, the work cannot fail to prove a most important contribution to the bio- grephical literature and political history of our ‘country. tax Apvextones or Geranp rae Lion Kronor. Derby & Jackson. This is a translation and welding together of Ge "a two well known works on African sports and adventure. No romance, however highly colored neé’work of fiction, however exciting, can exceed in wildne?s.of adventure and in thrilling interest, the merratiyes of the French Niwrod. Gordon Cum- ming, with all his egotism, self conceit and pro- pensity to the marvellous, is not half so fertile of in- vention and amusing as our Algerian Spahi. He not only kills, but cooks his lion,in the most offhand and nonchalante manner possible. His stories have nciness and freshness of interest which Cum- ig wanted, because they are told in an easy, natural, sportsmanlike way, which leaves the reader im doubt as to how much there is of truth and how much there is of fiction in them. The Scotchman ™“ lacked the art to varnish over his creations with sufficient plausibility to make them go smoothly down. Gerard, on the contrary, has the talent of *%, raconteur, which scems inborn in every Frenchman, and, startling and incredible as are many of his yarns, we cannot help attaching a certain degree of faith to them, from the apparent simplicity and truthfulness with which they are related. ~. The sacrifices of time, health and ‘opportunities which he has made to advance their interests should meet with some commensurate re- ward at their hands. There is no post that Col. Fremont can aspire to, to which his qualifications ‘and acquirements will not do honor. The most con- spicuous features of his character are energy and decision of purpose—two qualities which are, more ‘\ than all others, eesential in‘the Chief Magistrate of a nation situated as we are. We have only to read his life ‘to wee that he is ‘‘the coming mam” needed to give @ firm and healthy direction te our affairs, Had his hand been on the helm, the vessel of the State would not now be drifting on the shoals and quick- sands which beset it.
