ly possible to converse with them twenty utes before the question is asked, “ What ch do you attend? How do you like the tor?” Mrdame Pfiffer, in her recent kK of traveis, alludes to this very peculiar- jy. Everywhere—oa railroads, or in steam- oate, or at hotela—she wae pestered with fnqniries as to the character of her religion end the difference of her creed. Miss Marray algo ailudes to the vapid tone of our conversa- tion with equal surprise, and Ler work contains Many sound aad valuable saggestions for the improvement of her American sisters, which we trust will not be overlooked. We are compsied to adwit, then, certain faults in American society, which, uorepaired, are giving the taste and the ambition of the Jouvg entixely a wrong direction. To be rich, tahe gay, to be fachicnable, is now the chief hope of the young women of the country. The men of the country sim at wealth with no less earpestoess, and the result is seen in the in- Congruities, the ill-filied positions, the extra- vagance, the folly, and, in truth, the wretch- ednecs of msrried and uamarried lite. The American fireside, at least in our large cities, is vo longer'@ place where maternal love and paternal counsels form the habits and princi- Pies of the yonng. The educationof the heart an of the temper is out of date ; the examplea of domestic suavity are few and far between. ‘The daughters are thicking of their dressesor their beaux, and Yourg America rushes into the sirect to smoke segars, or to “lubricate” at the hote), or to lark it at the Bowery. In England and in Germany the women ne- wer forget their domestic duties nor the re- sporsibilities of their sex. The most elegant, the most accomplished, do not disdain to be- come yeod housekeepers, nor to use their own Dende in many of the preparations of the pan- fey. Thy often keep the acoounta of the family andsettle its bills. He-e, not one wo- - manin a hundred knows anything about figures, or can write an intelligible receipt. In France the mariied women are, when ne- ocrsity compels it, the best assistants of their » husbands, snd in the upper circles, their wit, their intelligence, their spirituality and prac- tical talent are truly remarkable. Here, it seems as if the sex were satisfied with the life of dolie, to roll their pretty eyes, and be dan- died on the lap of pleasure, ‘We trust that theee remarks of ours will have some effect on those sensible women who tead the Heraup. They will perceive that we have not gone deeply into the subject, for it is ore too minutely delicate to be enlarged upon in @ newspaper; but the future of this republic will be bright or cloudy, precisely as the wo- men ehall exercise their influence on their families and direct the early training of their children. Our faults of society, which appear to be surface faults merely, have in fact a deep weated origip, and should be corrected, Kansas—We have been waiting to hear of the deaths, and the battles, and the sieges and the slaughter that were to come off in Kansas. But somehow, the news don’t come. All the fighting out yonder appears to be done in the columns of New York journals, This is very like a swindle. The Kansas people have roused us to come and see them fight and die. Why don’t they do it? Curtain! curtain! Police Intelligence. Arne? or River Prrates.—Oflicer Barry, of the First ward police, yesterday forenoon captured two young men, calling themselyes Patrick Kearney and William Hare, charged with robbing the brig Alcenes, of Proyi- ence, Rhode Island, lying in the stream off the Battery. ‘The mate of the brig came on deck and found three young men in the act of putting a sail into their boat valued ut about $15, The mate hailed them, and tol them to put it back; they refused, sprang into their boat, uud rowed off with the sail. Edward Eldridge, captain of the brig, was just making the vessel to come on board, and saw the away. The mate called to the cap them; he did so—the rogues rowing ahead of the captain, and made pier No. 4. Just as they got ,on the pier the oflicer succeeded in cap- wiring the two above named, the third fellow escaped. ‘They were taken before Justice Osborne, who committed them to prison for trial. Much credit is due to ofticer Barry for the part he took in this matter, or the rogues would have escaped, It seems the officer was standing on pier No. 1, looking out towards the bay, when he noticed this suspicious movement, and hurried to tho pler in question, and captured the two as described. ‘The oficer has taken poss ‘ion of the boat in which the ac- cused partios came to the dock. It is about seventeen feet ong, painted green, with a yellow streak—no name or marks about it. ‘The sail was posenae to the captain, The officer can be found at picr No. 1 by any person claiming the boat. Naval Intelligenee. LAUNCH OF THE STEAM FRIGATE COLORADO. Norrouk, June 19, 1856. ‘This morning, precisely at 10 o'clock, the beautiful steam frigate Colorado, one of the six lately ordered by Congross, glided from her house at Gosport yard into the water. The launch was witnessed by an immense throng of admiring spectators. All the ship houses and yard ‘were literally fied with the beauty and fashion of the “twin sisters,’’ and the river was covered by steamboats, ‘veasels and small boats, and I can safely say that there mever was a more graceful and beautiful launch wit- messed from any yard in the United States. Before George W, Morton, Esq. Joxz 21.—The United States vs. The Brig Braman.— John Faunce deposed that he is commander of the reve- nue cutter, arrested the Braman, Captain Delano; said he was bound for St. Thomos and China; he said Mr. DeCosta was the owner; that he lived in New York, and put up at the Metropolitan Hotel. ‘A reporter of a morning paper deposed that the name of the Braman had evidently been rewritten; the words Braman and New York appeared to be newly painted; underneath the word New York was the word “Salem,” Several papers were produced and identified, and the case was adjourned to Tuesday next. a tombe bow!
