FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, SONEY MARKET. Fray, May 30—06 P, M. ‘The atock market shows increased activity, and better «prices ruled at the board. All the leading rallroad stocks were in demand. Erie advanced + per cent; Delaware and Hadaon, 134; Michigan Southern, %{; Panama, 3{; Cle Sand and Pittsburg, 3{;Galena and Chicago, 2; ; Cleveland vand Toledo, {; Ohicago and Rock Island, {. Nicaragua ‘Transit fell off 3 per cent; New York Central, 3. At the second board some of the most prominent railroad stocks ‘were better. Erie went up 3/ per ceht; Reading Railroad, 3<; Michigan Central, 34; Michigan Southern, 14. New York Oontral fell off 34 per cent, and closed heavy; Nioara- ua closed without change. The dispatch of Mr. Marcy ‘to Mr, Dallas, in reference to the dismissal of Crampton, @ives universal satisfaction. It is calculated to restore public confidence at once, and put the question foreve at reat. Ine few days the whole affair will be forgotten. Money is steadily working easier. Ths steamship Fulton, trom this port for Southampton and Hayre, to-morrow— Saturday—will not take out more than two hundred thousand doliars in specie. Operations in foreign ex- change for thia packet have been limited. We quote bills on London at 934 @ 93¢ per cent premium; on Paris, -5f. 1734 wf. 1644. There is very li-tle doubt but that the month of June will bring a perfect plethora in the money market, and an advance in the best class of stock securities equal to anything of the kind known for t™many monthe, Outside hoiders are evidently of this Opinion, which accounts for the little disposition exhibit- ed to sell, ‘The Assistant Treasurer reports to-dsy as follows:— Fed ca Srpeury account... ++ +$201,487 06 Received seeee 145,284 60 “ “ 9,988,727 66 160 45 ‘Paid on disbursing checks. 61,527 59 The payments to-day include $21,000 on California drafts and cheoks. The Treasury Department has given notice that the United States stock, issued by act of Congress of July 22, 1846, will be redeemed on the 12th of November next, ‘when the interest thereon will cease. The Vepartment ‘will algo purohase the stock on the following terms, ia addition to the interest accrued to the day of purchase, with one gey’s interest for the money to reach the vonder:— On such stock received at the Treasury between the lat day of June and 3lst day of July inclusive, one-half of ‘one per cent on the amount specified in the certificates. such stock received between the lst and Sist days of August, one-fourth of one per cent. We do not expect the autumn trade to begin before the first of July. The stocks carried over are said not to be much, ifany, larger than usual. The payments bave continued to be fair from most sections of the country; the only difficulty felt to any extent has beon Sbiefly in the grain growing States of the North and ‘West, where the fall in breadstuffs and provisions has interfered to some extent with collections. The spring Dusiness, upon the whole, has been satisiactory; though not perhaps 50 extensive as was anticipated at its com- mencement. Every year, with the increase of capita! and skil},improvement is made in the style and quality of Ame- rican manufactured goods. The character of many fabrics is now as well and widely known to the trade from their labels ag the value of a piece of American coin. To attain this reputation for standard makes has been the result of years of careful aud honest toil on the part of those wmanu‘acturers who produce them. This course, it is | @iscovered, ultimately pays better than anyother. For instance, the bleached water twist thirtings made by the York Mills, in Oneida county, are as well known to the trade and to consumers as the epecie coin in circulation During the past week there has been a good export demand for cotton g20ds. About 1000 bales of brown drills were taken for China at 8c., and about 2,000 pack. ages brown shee ings and shirtiags, for Mexico, chiefly for Tampico, at about 8c, for heavy goods. The whole valve of exports for the week ending May 20, amounted to $48,247, of which $36,000 were taken for Mexico; Braziy also took $8,000. The chief features in the spring trade of foreign dry goods bave been the extent of importations, (and so far as fancy goods were concerned were greatly in excess of the demand and the sacrifices made at the auction rooms, The losses on their importation have been immense, tailing in some cases'to neorly one-half of the cost and charges. Notwithstand- ing this wholesale slaughter, the cry has been “Still they come,” and the importers may still say that they have 4g few more of the same sort left.”” These losses, how. ever, must enure to those abroad, or on the other side of the water. Beyond the auctioneers who have sold them, nobody has been benefitted by an operation. The evilof forcing fancy silks and other fancy goods off by auction works its own eure, and those who suffer are not LUkely to repeat the game, In domestic goods Osnaburgs continue scarce and in good demand, with a limited stock. Our poultry and game list shows some changes, and snipe aud plover are in, while winter game has run out. With the exception of wild pigeons and spring chickens there {s not much doing in poultry. Fish does not show much change. Shad are running out and mackerel and herring are looming up largely. Butter was cheap in the early part of the week, but yesterday it manifested an upward tendency. Good Orange county, however, still sells at 25 cents a pound. Egga sell cheaper than they have done before for four years. Eleven and twelve are sold for a sbillio, Fruit begins to come tn pretty well. Apples are grow- ing searce, but strawberries are becoming plentiful, and yesterday cherries made their appearance.
