NEW YORK HERALD, SATURDAY, MAY 24, 1856. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY Bankes. Fuupay, May 32—€ P. M. There was po change of consequence in the stock mar ‘Ket this morning. The tendency was upward, and ia two or three ins anees ragua Transit improved \ per cen’; Chicago and Rook Inland, 5; Gelewa and Chicego, . All other stosks Opened and olosea firw at prices previously current. We motion a sale of Wisconsin Late chore Railroad stock this morniag at 714s, buyer sixty days. This company ‘will pay a divicend of four per cent in adout five weeks. The money warket is gradual y, but steadily, improving. Sterling Exshang’, first ciass, was by no means firm to- day at qcote lone, sud the stamebip Atlantic, from this port for Liverpool to morrow (‘aturday), will mot take outover $200,000 in +prcie. The rext semi-monthly remittance from Califorpia must be near at band. it has been wineteon (sys on the way, and must be along by the miadle of next w:ck—perhaps before another European shipment, The bank account for this week must bee wery favorabie ove. It is the opinion of some of the largest bavkers and exchange drawers that money will eoon be easier than has been known for many months. Thisc mcided exact/y with our views, expressed overand oversgain. The month of June will see a ple:hora Of money in th's market beyond all doubt. Bayerso good divicend psying ctccks on time, their own option say thirty or sixty days, need have no apprehensions, Ii ‘will make very jit le ciffurence whether Mr. Crampton is Gismisced or not, ihe subject has been talked about so gauch , and is now so we.) understood, that the mountain which baa been so long in labor will at last bring forth a mouse, The effect has been already anticipated ten-fold, and we shall not be surprised to see stocks twe per cent higher im less than two days after Mr. Crampton’s dis, missal than the day before. Th» improving condition of the money market will more ‘ian neutralize all the imaginary po.i'zeal troubles. The accumulation of money must ture the attention of outsiders te good stock invest- mentain aa ticipation of tne appronsning dividends, Every steamer from Europe will bring better financial and com- meroial news, All the Exropean markets for our greststa- ple products were, at the latect dates, ins very satisfactory condiiion, and a very active demand for breadstuffs exist, on this side of the Atlantic for export, at improving prices. At the second beard the stock market was altogether ‘better, Mlinols Central bonds advanced \ per cent; Ni- earagua, '%; Mic: igan Central, 34; Evie, New York Central Railroad, %; Michigan Southern, . The re. ceipts of the Erie Railroad Company in tweaty days in May, this year, amounted to $519,(00. The total earn- ings fer the month, last year, was only $461,000. The Erie Company have just concluded s very favorable ar- rangement with the North Shore road, or what may be Detter bnown as the CaradajGreat Western rond, connest- ing at the Suspension Bridge. This will give the Erie Company a great increase of passenger business, and enable passergers, by this road, to see that work on their way tothe West. It is undoubtedly » great attraction totravellors for pleasure. The macagess of the Erie Com- pany are securirg feeders to their road in every direc. tion, and uncer the superintendence of Mr. McCallum this Toad is mansged for the benefit of the company, and not Of individuals, as is the New York Ce ntral. The Assistant Treasurer reports to-day as follows:— Paid om Treaeury account.... Becetved om Tressury account. 131,761 00 Balance on Treasury account. 19,710,017 68 Paid for Asesy office...... +» 68,767 18 Paid on diaburrirg checks. + 18,438 26 ‘The eurrent cptrations of the Treasury Department on the Zist tast., were as follows:— For the redemption of stocks... For the Treasury Departmen’ Fer the Intertor Department tof the navy..... . Repayment on acecunt of the navy.. ‘The total amount of revenue collected at the port of Bantisgoce Cuba during the month of April is $70,884 18K, being an ic crease of $12,275 123 over the sum col- lected im the came month last year. There is mow very tittle doubt but thet Mr. Crampton will be dismissed. Advices received this evening from Washington about settles the matter. It will be seen by am editorial ariisle from the Union (official), in snother part of this paper, tha! the government have at last deter- "to uct and the probability is that the whole question ‘will be disposed of within the next week. It will bea great relief to all parties to have the dismisssl{made at once. Bo far as our foreign reiationsggenerally are concerned it will be better that Mr. Crampton shou'd go than stay. It will hasten the adjustment of all questions at isme between the two governments, and [bring into power in Great Britain a party more favorably inclined towards this country. No one can compiain of the tone of Lord Clarendon’s last despatch; but the present Ministry of England are dirposed, as we have had sbundant evidence of, to keep alive and agi‘ate questions calculated tokeep * the two countries in a continual excitement. Tne peo- Pe of Great Britain and the United States are sick and tired of this everlasting political turmoil, and notbing short of a change of Ministry in England will put a stop to ft, ‘The anoexed statement exhibits the aggregate value ef the imports and exports of the United States during the quarter erding March 31, 1856:—< Commmncs or raz GyrreD SraTms—Iuports AND Exports. It will be eeen that the actual net earnings of the road the year past were over 8 percent. Out of this, how- ever, must be deducted the State tax of about *; of one per cent, which roads in Maesachusetts are not subjeci to. The prospects of the road certainly look encoursging for the future, of which the cirectors speak as follows:— ‘This resuit of the year’s business, taken in connection with the present condition of the road, and 11s equip- ment, furnisbes us good reason to rely confiden'ly on the vatue of our stock, and affords full assurance of a fair re- turn on its investment. The water power on its line, which is now unoccupied, {s greater thea what has been already improved, and it must be early brought into use. The po, m of the Union doubles in twenty-five years, and its mapu‘acturing business increases in about the seme ra‘io, This busin for macy years to come, must be done in New Ergland, and thers is no location for this purpose so favoraole as is found on our line of route. circumstances render it quite certain that the valley of the Merrimac will shorti preseat one of the mostdensely peopled and thriving intetjor dit ricts ia the country, and will afford a permanent and profiiable business toour road. There was not much new ote in the market yester- day, except perhaps the abundance of garden produce everywhere to be seen. Meat maintains last week's prices, with the exception of corned pieces, which are two cents cheaper per pound. The poultry business is slack, wi h the exception ef spring shickens and wild pigeons, which are tolerably cheap and abundant. Pigeons make very gocd eating, and at present rates are chesper food than beef or mutton, Good butter is still 26 cents per pound, and eggs are cheaper than ever. Twelve were sellizg for 15 cents yesterday—the lowest rate so far this yoar. Fish is p.ontiful though rather dear. There isa good deal of fine mackerel and herring in market; shad, however, is having its last run, and is not 6o much sought afier. It is too oily # fish for warm weather. The oyster business 18 duller than usual. Vegetables loom up large- ly. Potatoes are cheaper. There is @ large quantity of magnificent Bermudas in market, which command a ready cale at $5 per bbl. They are by far the finest po- tatoes we have cyer seen in market. This is the more remarkable, as they are grown from the poorest known seed, viz:—the westera red. Last year the trade in this potato was $250,C00, all whick went to the island of Bermuda. Other summer vegetables are cheap, with the exception of tomatoes and green peas, which are poor and dear. Apples are runaing ont fast, while straw- berrics come in slowly. They were selling yesterday at 12 cents o dacket, and some of the dealers thought they would be dowm to six cents te-day. They will soon be chespenough. ~ The following tab!e shows the price of each article: — a 016 la n 1" © Smccee sco BISSIIS SEESSSIIISSIINSSZIBSEIS ISHII III eI Ssessszassessl SISSSS EEMHMSCeosessBElssensnes, OMIM S ween eoecoceoscooowecooosococjc]e a & a ° ry ry 2 a a o a 1 0 6256 1 BT 1 iy ° 00 J 15 oo 0 ~ Qo - 075 O76 ° 1 = 018 1 - @ om 0 _ 1 - 4a BSSSS BILLA SSSRSSSsieSscseese saisessei Strawberries, per basket...
