Itis only men of nerve who can take advantage of the present depression. Outsiders must be attracted by the current quotations of the leading Weat- ern railroad stocks, They are all doing avery large bu- siners and earning more money than ever before. The business of the country never was in ® more prosperous condition than it is at this moment,,and railroad traflic never larger. Whatever may be the price for the leading railread stocks among the bulls and bears, it will not in- fluence in the least the actual vatue as investments, and ‘those who can carry until they may have need have no fearsasto the result. The steadiness of prices at the stock exchange is pretty good evidence that the intrinsic value of the securities is rather abov ‘than below current rates. There are several importan matters hanging over the polit.cal world, but there is no danger of anything serious growing out ofthem. A fe days may clear away all the difficulties and misunder standings, and leave the horizon perfectly clear. But fo the quibbling of politicians we should long since hava arrived at a satisfactory adjustment of all the questions now at issue. Recent events will, without doubt, hastea the movements of the governments concerned, and giv us, we hope, a safe and speedy deliverance. Our finau- cial affairs are in a sound and satisfactory condition. We have nothing to complain of, and the indications point decidedly to greater abundance of capital and lower rates of interest. ‘The exportations of specie from this port last week were nct fo large as anticipated.
