NEW Yc’. Cy @inted Fillmore was received with chers, groans and hisses. ‘The Ely resolutions were temporarily laid on the table, to be taken up at a later hour. At 9 o'clock the ant!-Fillmore delegates left the hall, and arenow in consultation at the Adams House. They will probably issue a call for a convention to elect dele- ates to the New Yoru Convention, of June 12, Boston Weekly Bank Statement. Boston, May 6, 1856. France Called on to Protect the Cutholic Church in Mexico—~ The French Minister at Mexico the Special Protector of the Pope’s NuncioeThe Complication in our Foreign Relations The Effect om American Politics, dc., fc. A new complication has taken place in our foreign rela- tions, involving not on'y the question of peace or war abroad, but of political confusion at home. France has _ deem called on to interfere in Mexico for the protestion of ‘the property of the Catholic church lately seized by Pre- sident Comonfort. Whether Louis Napoleon will accept ‘the call, and step forward as the defender of the church im Mexico, is s question no man cananswer. That it affords him an excellent chance of extending his power, and giving vent to the restless military element of the empire, is evident. Such a course would also bring to his support the power of Rome—a power just as essential for the stability of his dynasty as was the alliance with England necessary to his legitimacy. “Yt is a very serious consideratien how far England has gommitted herself to France, and to what extent eer Jeon can influence public affsirs ance the Channel. Evgland is bent on sustaining her claims in Ceatral pgp and France determines to protect the rights of Catholic church in Mexico, the ‘ Western policy”’ — ently alluded to by Napoleon? may soon become @ reality, and we msy be called upon to ‘face these two great Powers single handed. A few weeks will show it your correspondent’s informa- tion is correct. Trial of Steam Fire Engines in the Park. Quite a large crowd assembled in the Park yesterday Morning, to witness the trial between the rival steam engines, which had been advertised to take place for some ‘weeks previously. The trisl was to decide the award of Prizes offered by the city, as follows:—$500 for the best working model, $300 for the next best, aud $200 for the. third best. The following engines were entered:— Lee & Larned, New York, fall size model rotary pam. ae &larned, do., ‘small model reciprocating Dump. jamesSmith, do. small ¥. C. &J. 8. Burnham, Yorkville, small model. The Committee of the Board cf Councilmen, before whom the trial progressed, were John H. Brady, John Kennard, George Merritt, John Baulch and Jacob L. Smith. Asthe committee were too modest to suppose they eould give a correct description themselves, they invited number of the best known engineers attached to the large steam works throughout the city, to assist them in forming a proper judgment, and several of them were on the ground. fire Marshal Baker, Chief Carson and other well known members of the Fire Department were also present. Tee & Larned’s engine has already been partially de- seribed in these columns, The engine weighs 6,500 lbs., ‘and the boilers are so constructed that a very large surface is exposed fo the action of the flame and thus steam is generated in a very little time. This 4s done by means of a coil of tubes contained within a coil of larger tubes, the annular spaces being filled with wa- ter, with a flame inside the inner tube and outside the outer one; thus converting the water into steam at short notice. This engine is to be of six horse power, Mr. James Smith entered a small model, a two inch and a half cylinder engine, of about s third horss power, with separate tubular boiler. It was three feet high and two in diameter, of simple construction; pump and cylinder working ina line with one piston rod, with « stroke ot four anda halfizches. Diameter of steam cylinder, two and a half inches; of pump, two inches. Its peculiarity consists in # spring to throw the valve open, and its great merit was its simplicity of construction. Burnham’s ergine was an upright tabular boiler, thirty-two inches dismeter, seven feet high, and had two engines and two pumps, workiag vertically on the side of the boiler, Pump and engine has a stroke of seven and three quarter inches. This was about eight horse power, and its cylinder seems disproportionably Jarge, compared with the boi'er, It is rated at eight horse power. All the engines being declared in readiness, the signal was given, and at 11:45 A. M. the boilers were fired up. The water began to spout as follows:— No, minutes. Pounds of Steam. 12 80 14 & to 100 . 22 ‘Smith’s one-third horse power enginge only ak twenty feet hose, and out of « five-sixteenth inch nozzle threw a thin stream sixty-five feet. Burnham’s, with a three-quarter inch nozzle, threw 125 feet from fifty feet of hose. The inventor of this mode] claims that, with an engine of 7,000 pounds, they could throw 110 feet through a three inch nozzle, which would be s tremendous stream of water. Lee & Larned’s succeeded in throwing 185 feet through soneand one-eighth inch nozzle, and 150 feet through sone and one-sixteenth inch nozzle. This was effested by holding them up at an angle of forty-five degreas. Potated towards the zenith they did not extend over one hundred feet in height. Nothing occurred to mer the interest of the occasion, though the trial was not deemed satisfactory, owing to the smaliness of the models on trial, which disappointed the crowd. There is no doubt but that steam engines could be brought into play with very fine effect fm large fires, as the stream of water is so continuous as to bid defiance to anything a hand engine could effect, and no doubt but that they will be very generally used even- tually, The time taken to start the fire is of course the great difficulty, and will interfere with their being brought immediately into use for small conflagrations. ‘The committee reserved their decision as to the award Of premiums, whieb, no doubt, will be decided to-day.
