Louis Repuslisan, May 1.] A vast smount of virtuous indignation is expanded in the proceedings of a mee ing of citizens of Lawrence, Banses Territory, giowing ont of the base attempt of a citizen of that piace to murder S. J. Jones, the Sherif ot Dovgias county. The mestirg was held on the 24°h, and the two men who have been most instrumental in stirring up bad blood and civil war ia that Territory— Reeder ana Kobdiason—*ere the mos: conspicuous actors an it, Reeder was the chairman of the meevicg, and ina Jong epeech, while hypoeritally deploring tee ast by which he li” ci a fellow deing wes sought to be taken, did not hecitate to address wo the people such argument3 as were likely to provoke ‘urther miecniet and other out- 3. The matter which ceewed to be uppermost with him was, that this attempt at assactination might injure the cause in which he sod they were engaged. He alluded to the poritions assumed by bis party in the Territory; to the resolutions adopted at the Big Springs; to the doctrine epunriatec there, ‘that they woula never submit to the laws of the lerritory as a permanent in. situation; but would set themselves about optaining re- mecies for the ur pose of getting rid of them; that the allot box and the courts aad oli peaceful remedies should be resorted to, and sfier there remedies had been ex- Jhausted, aad they had no chcice but to sit down under these laws permanectiy, or resist them by force, they would resist them without regerd to consequences. The courts have Deen sought, and I am sorry to say that little hope of redress is to be found there. The “heriffs ot the coun- ties are partisane, carefu!ly selected fur their work, and they select the jurors, who are partisacs. Arranged by pro-slavery men, that one of their pumber should be shot in the night time, and his life taken away, and all to make outs case to the preja- bog of the free State men of Lawrence! The characier of an fs illustrated by this speech, quite as clearly as ts was ilius’:ated in bis conduct at Sacramento, ani even since he haa teen a citizen of Kansas. ‘The same idea pervades his speech, and it is to g» forth to the world that a pro-alavery man was found willing to assastinate one of bis friends’ in order that the pecple of Lawrence should be made to suffer for the outrage. We extract further from his speech:—I hsppened to de out of town last evening, aad I supp.se I shall not be charged with the offence committed thea. But I understocd that an individual, who fs ob- noxious to individuals, as individuals, on ac count of individca: disputes, and on account ot his ha- racsing the members of the community, by little insigni- icant write, took his porition Isst evening in an exposed tent, without » guard near him; even when one shot had been fixed he sti had no precaution taken, bat placed himselfin ap expored situation, and while thus exposed a abot was fired and took effect. I trust, I pray, that it Will not reuult neriously. If the slave power of this country, n order to possess this Seeggnd required that Ur. Jones should lay his life or be exposed to the shots of his triends, taen Mr. Jones must expose his life—then these shots must be fired. They tried it on a free State man—it failed. Now it is , im order to get up another trouble, that it should be ® proslavery man, in gooi «ernest: and if the free State men would not go int» it, why, I will not say they themselves would do it, bu it'looks' very much as if that war the case. Of course no men in this community would approve ot thi and I would here eay, believing, aa I do, that this attack wan the work of an Assassin, to make capital against those of us engaged in this free State movement—and if I did not believe it, I would do the same thing—I will here say, that by the authority vested in me, as Governor of the Territ-ry of Kansas, { propese to offer a reward for ‘the detection of the assassin; and if approved by this community, I will offer a reward of $500 for the detection of the asrarsin and his conviction in the Courts of the United Stater. Prices were un- settled, and neither of the two great speculative parties predominated. All the leading railroad stocks were in demand at current rates, and the sales, buyer’s option, show that a large mumber of operators have confidence in the future. At the first board Illinois Central bonds advanced \ per cent; Canton Company, \; Galena and Chicago, 34; Michigan Central, 34; Michigan Southern, Chicago and Rock Island, 3. Erie Railroad declined { per cent; Reading, {. Harlem old stock sold down to 17% per cent, There was auale of Harlem preferred this morning at 50 per cent, but between the boards 523 per cent was offered for a large lot without finding sellers. ‘The company report that there may be a resumption of cividends on the preferred stock on the 1st of Januery next, This has crested a demand for it in the market. The best purchase of the issues of this company, beyond all question, ia the second mortgege bonds, The pre- ferred stock, of ceurse, comes after the bonds, and, as faras security goes, the bonds have much the advantage. If the preterred stock is worth 5234 per cent the several mort- gege bonds secured by the first lien in real estate valued atthe full amount, are certainly a desirable inveatment at current prices. C.eveland and Toledo was in demand, and the sales were quite large. It was well sustained at Satarday’s prices. There sre plenty of buyers on time, their own option, at cue aud two per cent abore cash prices. Tee road is domg a good business. The reseipta in April amonnted to $130,229, against $102,810 for the same menth last year, showing an increase of $27,419 for the month this year. This is full up to the estimate, After the adjournment of the board the following sales of binds and stocks were made at auction by A. H. At the second board there was not much change ia the mar! Prices were well msintained. Erie Railroad closed at 5634 a 563¢ per cent, firm. The recalpts of this road in April amount to $867,000. The earnings will bs more than $€00,000, against $517,000 for the same month last year. The receipts thus far in Mey have averaged $33,000 per day, and the prospest is very flattericg for a large business. In May last year the earnings were $461,804, aversging leas than $18,000 perday. Theearn- ings of the Erie Company in April this year will be nearly equal to those of ‘he New York Central Company in the same month last year. It is our impression that the per cent increase in the gross and net earnings of the Erie Com- pany this year will be much larger than the New York Central. The low prices ruling for breadstuffs and other pro¢uce will throw a large portion of that which heretotore the New York Central Company has obtained, upon the Erie caral, and the revenue of the Central Railroad is tikely to be seriously affecied by this losa of business. We notice 8 eale this afternoon of a small lot of Wise onsin Leke Sacre Railroad at 72 per cent, cash. The gross earnings of this road in the first tour morths of the present fiscal year have been far in acvance ct the com- pany 's estimates, and were then sufficient to guarantee a dividend in July of five percent. This company does avery large passenger busizess, which is admitted to be the mcat prcfitable for a railroad. Every road con- structed in Wiseonsix, terminating on Like Michigan, must act asa feeder to the lake Shore line. As the cities slorg the western shore cf Lake Michigan increase in popu ation and business, the local traffic of the Lake line must increase. We ure now wishin sixty days of a Givicend, and five per cent tanen off the present market price will put the etoce at 67 per cent, low enough, in our opinion, for a permanent tea per cent cividena pay- ing security, The steamship Arabia, from Boston for Liverpool, oa Wednerday, will take out about $100,000 in specie. There hes not been much demand yet for exchange. Sterling was not so firm, and drawers were not disposed to adate a traction in thelr rates. ‘The Assistant Treasurer reports to-Cay as follow Paid on Treasury account... $200,229 82 Reserved on Treatury account 148,314 71 Belapce ou Treasury secount 9,645,953 56 Paid on disbursing checks...... 82,362 04 The warrants entered at the Treasury Department, Washing'on, on the2i inst., were as tollo For the redemption of s'ocks For the Treasury Department For the Interior Department Yor Castoms.....
