The books of this company open on the 26th inst., and we Jock fora very metive demand for the stock before that date, to mest short contracts. The stock is not plenty, amd prices must advance. Reading was active thio morning, but prices were not maintained. The bears will have their way in this stock for s time; but as soon ae the coal business opens for the season new buyers will be attracted, and without doubt an advance wealized. There was more business in Galena and Chi- ago to-day than usual, at better prices. Michigan Southern and Michigan Central were a little heavy, with wmall sales. An advance in both of these stocks is be- yond a doubt before many days pass away. Whitehouse, Som & Morison, No. 54 William street. The ioliow:ng -emarks relative to the construction of The remaining link in the great middle route between the Atlantic and the Mississippi river, appeared a few aye since in the columns of a eotemporary:— A charter has just been granted by the Legislature of Pennsylvania for a road trom Allentown to Reading, whieh is designed to form the last link neeced to eonnect tbe West with New York, by what is termei the Great Middle route, which is made up of the Blew Jersey Central, Lehigh Valley, Penosylvania Central roads, &. Another route from Allentown to Aubura, to connect with the Dauphin and Susque- hanna, and thence to Harrisburg, is alao projected, and acharter tor this route was obtained some time since. ‘The same object—connecting New York with the West— ia to be secured by either route, and that such a connec- ‘ion should be made is of gzeat importance to the pud- Tio generally, and te this city in particular. It is one of the most amepectent i limes of yet unfinished road in the eountry, p—only about thirty miles—in fn othcswise pre as Denning from New York fe the Mississippi river, cannot, long continue uncom pleted, Dut one of these roads is needed, it behoov the ‘ies in interest—those connected with the road, 4am the Zast and ihe West, which are to be benefited by the filling up of this gap—to investigate the matter, and after @eciding upon which is the cheapest and most feasible ve concentrate their efforts upon building tha: rather than by civided efforts fail to secure the com: pletion of either. Which of he my has the we have not, at present, form an opinion; but it is of great importance to New Werk that one of these roads should be built, and that ly. Both of the routes alluded to may be feasible enough, Dut only one of them is required. The construction of Both would divide the travel to the injury of each other. One is sufficient, and the one that takes the strongest hold pom the public mind will attract the most ospital, ana be constructed at the earliest day. We agree with our eotemporary in all he says about the great middle route ‘to the West, but are decidedly opposed to the constraction ‘ef competition roads on any part of the line. They fojure each other without doing the publie any good. We suall Ieeartily advocate the tmmediate construction of one of ‘these roads, and for the protection of the interests of all, eppose the construction of the other. The great middle Boute is destined to supersede all others to and from the ‘West, so far as the city of New York is concerned, and al} the links in the chain forming that route should be properly constructed, properly managed and and properly located to insure the greatest @iciency and expedition in their operation. We have no eepital to throw awsy upon visionary projects or upon experiments, and it is therefore necessary to concentrate our resources upon the most feasible line, and carry it forward at once to completion. A few days will, we ‘rast, decide this point, for no time should be lost in open- xg this important route to the Micsissipp: river. The Ohio and Pennsylvanis Railroad Company, the Ohio and Indians Ratiroad Company, and the Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad Company, forming together a line ef 465 miles in length, are to be amalgamated into one yy, under the title of the Pittsburg and Chicago Railroad Company. Authority has beon obtain:d from the State Legislature for the union, and the stovl solders of the rerpec.ive companies are to be assembled to ob- tein their sanction. ‘The annexed statement exhibits the quantity and in wome instances the value of mann feom Great Britain to the United “tates, a: months ending March 16, 1865 and 1856:— Wwrorts mto THe Uxrreb STATES FROM GREAT Getton yarn, Ibe, Gotten inread... The general navigation and commerce of the Southern provineee, as well as the general trade between them and the United States, are decreasing, owing, it is alleged, to the settlement of the diffinities that have existed on the River Platte, The more liberal tariff, both on imports and exports, attracis a large bulk of the trade of these provinces to that quarter. This resolution explains itself pretty clearly. The company is simply bankrupt. It cannot pay the interest on its bonds, and sppeals to the endorsers. Such thi have happened in this country; but that our Canadian neighbors should be guilty of such @ piece of financering is the most astounding thing in the world. It is not at all strange that the Yankees should fail and repudiate, according to the British code, but we can hardly believe that the British capitalists would suffer such a thing to oceur in their financial operations.
