The family and lodgers, of which there were a great nuniber, were awakened by « suffocat- ing amoke, which was so thick that it was with the Greatest difficulty that they made their way out. They were unable to put on their clothes, or to save any- thing. One of the second story rooms was filled with lodgers, and all made their escape with the excop‘ion of one man, named John Radley. His bed fellow pulled him, but was unable to get him awake, and he was left | prey to the devouring element. His crisped and blackened remains were found after the fire, tn the same position in which he was left. He was twenty-aix years oe & native of Ireland, and a carpenter by trade. He leaves no family. The builcing, with ite con- tents, was destroved, and house in the rear belonging to the same proprietor was cousiderably damaged. The contents of Woodruff & Robinson's storehouse were. to some extent, damaged by water. The fire originated in the bavement, most likely from carelessness or negest. ‘The logs sustained by McGan amounts to aout $2. insured for $1, 000 in the Mercantile Insurance Company w Yor! On Saturday afternoon a fire broke out under the statrs iv No. 7 Franklin pace. Officer Decker, of the Second district police, applied a few pails of water and suppressed the flames before much damage reeulted. MONEY MARKY. Scxpay, April 20—6 P. M. The stock market has not changed much during the past week. With more than the usual activity, prices for most of the leading securities have gradually appre- ciated, and there appears to be amidst the large specula- tive purchases a steady absorption of the most promi- nent dividend paying Cescriptions. The market value of the better class of stocks is at this moment considerably in sdvance of that ruiing at the same time last year, and it is weil known that in July and August last most of the Weatern railroad stocks ruled ten per cent above current quotations, We are at least month or six weeks ahead oflast year, and there is therefore every probability that prices will rule in Jane this year, as high as in Augast last year. Every dividend paying stock on the list {3 really worth now more than it was then, and should com- mand as much in the market. Then ths principal oa- tions of Europe were engaged ins war which threatened to last for years—now peace prevails, and capital and industry will soon become active again; while all the channels of commerce having been clesred from unzatural obstructions, will move along more freviy. Morey, which ot that time was required to furnizh the sinews of war, will now be employed im developing alithe elements of peace. Every branch of industry will receive additional force, and consumption will increase with pro- duction. Within our own limits there ia nothing to complain of, but, on the contrary, everything isin a very favorable condition. Tne country is fall of wealth, end well directed enterprise is sure to find adequate reward. There are no indications of wild speculation. Prises ‘or all the necessaries of life rule at remuners ing prices, and are at the same tims witbin the means of ail. There are ne evidences of extravegance, and credit has not been pushed to dangerous limits. The commercial classes find debts due promptly paid, and all the ramifications of trade are in a sound and healthy condition. With tne ineresse im populati:m and produetion, all works of in- ternal improvement judictously located must improve aa investments, and those who were among the earliest par- ebacers will realize rich returns on cost. With the ia- crease of capital we must look for lower rates and more moéerate profite. It will bea long time before we have a plethora of capital; but we bave no idea that interest will ever again rule as high in this country as in times past. We have, it is true, am immense country to develops; but our railroad system hes been carried to a greater extent during the past ten years than will be realized within tke next thirty. We shell not build o« msoy miles of road, or spendas much money on these works, within the next forty years ns we have during the past ten. The roace now in operation will therefore have a chance to strengthen themselves, and become establisned om a more permanent basis. The increase im railroads must for the future be very gradual, an‘ those now in existence, well Iccsted, must, under proper managemen', prove productive investments, We have gone on #9 rapidly, creating railroads, building upon borrowed capi- tal, and paying enormous prices for ', that 1 fs time there was a pause, to let the actual bnsiness wante cf the country approach nearer existing facilities. With the exception, perhaps, of Wisconsin, every Northern and Western State this side of the Mississippi river has a ays. tem of railroads equal, in extent, to their natural waats for the next twenty years. At the expiration of that time there will be very little necerrity for a new rond in any direction, and the o'd roads will be tna much more protperous condition than at present. We conld not now well dispense with any railosd in existence; but we pushed on their construction too fast— we got far ahead of the country’s wants, and now require time to equalize them. This fact must ha n important influence upon our supply of capital. As money asoumu- lates it must find employment. Railroads will not ab- sord it, and other methods must be devised. The soil may call into active ure more capital than heretofore. City improvement? may employ large amounts of mo- ney. ‘The manvfacturing and mechanical arts may at- tract larger investments, and business generally may take ite full share, but even beyond all the ordinary means of consumption there will be, without doubt, an accumula tion, and the accumulation must tend to a reduction of its market value. All the preduction ef Australia and California will, under the benign influeses of peace and prosperity, flow into and through natars! obannels, and thus form a basis for safe and legitimate credits, tea times in extent beyond the actual gold and silver put upon the market. We must look for lower rates of inte- rest on this aide of the Atlantic. As soon as the effects of the war in Europe have disappeared, and matters get settled down again into proper places, we shall begin to foel the effect of adding one hundred million of dollarr an- nually to the specie basis of the currency of the world, and inashort time realize its immense influence upon finencial affairs. For three or four days the money market haa hardon- eda little, The supply bas been fall, and ao eoarcity hae been experienced. The striageucy has been felt more in an active changing of loans, thaa in any other way. On Saturday there was s perceptible improvement, and the probability is) that we ehall have a permanent change for the better. Specie continues to accumulate in the Sub-Treasury; but the seazon for heavy imports is about over, and the deposits will not increase so rapidly. In sbout six weeks we shall draw pretty heavily upon the Assistant Treasurer's funds, to make up the seven and a half millicn payment on account of Texes creditors. Our exports of »pecie last week were about $700,000, and our receipts in the same time about $1,500,000.
