2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MOREY MAREST. Weosespay, April 16—6 P. M. Te tendency of prices at the opening this morning ‘was downward. Lower prices ruled througout, with ‘one or two exceptions. There were large sales of all the leading stocks, of which a /arger portion than usuai was for cash. at the first board Missouri 6’s declined '; per cent; California 7’s, ; Cantom Company. *; Erie Reil- poad, ; New Jersey Railroad, 3s; Michigan Central, Reading, ; Hudson River Railroad, 4; Michigan South- ra, 4; Muinois Central Railroad, {; Galena and Chicago, 1. Nicaragua Transit advanced 1 per cent; Chisago and Roek Island, %{. Cleveland and Toledo closed firm at yes- terday’s prices. Reading fell off under the influence of reported receipts. The net ineome of this company up to the Ist of April, this year, is about $230,000 Joes than to the same date last year. The falling off in met revenue during the four months ending that date amounts to nearly fifty per cent, compared with last year. It will take a Jong time to make up this deficieney, and put the boot on the other leg, and one-third of the Prevent fiscal year has passed away. The stockholders cannot complain if there is no inerease in the business of the road this year. The reed last year was very pro- @ustive. Galena and Chicago sold to the extent of 150 hares this morning, opening at 1143, and closing at 1233¢ per cemt. The news from Costa Rica has had a favorable effect on Nicaragua Transit stock. It advanced about one per cent, aad several hundred shares were sold, principally for cash. The accounts are yet entirely of one-sided character, and due allowance must be made for exaggerations. We shall not hear from the Walker side for some time, and in the meantime the news just re- esived will cheok emigration to Nicaragua. At the second board there was a pretty general im- provement in all the leading stoeks. The great move ment was in Chicago and Rock Island. This morning it closed steady at 94 per cent, and this afternoon there was am active demand at 96 9.9634 per cent. The corner in ‘this stock is working well at present. Cieveland and To- Jodo advanced % per cont, and 79 was bid at the close. vie was a fraction better. Reading closed at 92 per cent ash. Galena and Chicago was offered at 113% per cent» and no ss'es, The entire business of this road for the first three months of this year was not equal to that of ‘the month of October last year. Railroad bonds are not freely offered, and those in the market are steadily ap- Preciating in price. This class of securities will be sought for more and more, at better prices. The supply is not Jarge, while the absorption is going on silently and stea- @ily, although gradually. Sales were made to-day at the board, of Harlem 2d Mortgage bonds, at 76 per cent, ‘Pais includes the interest zince Feb. 1. Wedo not know ef safer and cheaper investment in the market. The Ist Mortgage bonds are quoted at 86 to 90 per cent, and reno better than the second bonds. The latter are se- eured by s first mortgage on all the real estate, rolling stock, &¢., &c., of the company. ‘The Norwich and Worcester Railroad Company earned fm Moreh, $28,458 87, against $23,466 49 for the same month last year, showing an increase of $4,992 28 for the mocnth this year. The Secretary of State of Wiseonsin reports in the trea- suryon the 3lstof March, the sum of $84,728 71, of which $29,422 05 was in gold coim, $64 50 in silver coin, 945,200 86 im bank notes of Wisconsin, and $41 30 in ehecks and certificates of deposit. The Secretary says ‘that he has not yet sufficiently examined the books of the Btate Treasurer to state how much money should be in the treasury. The Acistant Treasurer of this port reports to-day as $29,008 16 152,797 70 836,113 59 id for Amay 1,627 05 Paid on disbursing checks. . 70883 44 ‘The warrants entered at the Treasury Department, ‘Washington, on the 14th inst., were as follows:— For the redemption of stocks. -$4,129 89 For the Treasury Department. ‘483 00 Fer the Interior Department. The steamship Osprey, belonging to the New Granaja Canal snd Steam Navigation Company, was totally des- troyed ty fire at Kingston, Jamaica. She was fully in- sured. The (ity Bank has declsred a ba'f-year’s dividend of 4 per cent. The Gas Light Company has declared a half. yearly dividend of 5 per cent. At a meeting of parties interested in the third mort wage bonds of the Columbus, Piqua and Indiana Railroad Company, bearing the endorsement of the Cleveland, ‘Columbus and Cizcinnati Railrosd Company, the Balle- fontaine and Indiana Railroad Company, and the Ladians- polis and Bellefontaine Railroad Company, held at the Astor House, in the city ot New York, on the 16th April, 1866, at which over two-thirds of the issue of bonds—say ever three hundred thousand doilars—was reptesanted, M. It is also presty certain that the stock will be well matured by the payment of stock dividends. The company is authorizes, it appears, to issue new stock until its capital amounta to $7,200,000, and we have nodoudt the management will freely use the power placed in their hands by the constitution. In a few years the Galena and Chicago Railroad, at this rate, will cost as much per mile as some of the most expensi Eastern roads. Beef was without change Orleans and » half millions of dellars during the past yesr by the issue of new steck, bonds, &c., ali of which has been expended on the road, and yet we see by the sdove cireular that all the net earnings of the company over ten per cent are to be paid to the stockholders in new stock. We have @ little curiosity to know what the managers intend doing with the money. In the annual report for the fisoal year ending May 1, 1855, the chief engineer makes a detailed estimate, showing that the amount required to complete and stock the entire line of road was $1,375,000, Independent of this, the sum of $242,824 61 was required to pay off the floating and eleventh dividend certificate and interest due February 1, 1866, or in round numbers the sum of $1,617,824 51 was , required to meet all floating liabilities and expenditures for construction account. Nearly the whole of that sam has been raised; and as no other outlay of capital is al- Tnded to in the report, we are at a loss to account for the necessity of issuing stock for fature dividends. The stockholders appear to be powerless in the matter. They are forced to look en quietly, and see what has been and still is a fine, productive property dilated time and again, until it must finally fall into the same slough alongeide of the Eastern roads.
