BY THE HOUSE PRINTING TELEGRAPH, No. 21 WALL ‘OTREET. Haurax, April 14, 1856. The royal mail steamship Cambria, from Liverpooi on the 29th ultimo, arrived here at 6 o’clock this morning, She sailed again at 10 o’olock for Boston, where she will probably arrive in season for her mails to go forward on Wedresday morning's train. i On March 29, exchanged signals with the bark Carpatic On the 4th inst, passed the steamship Africa off Cape Clear. The Cunard steamship America, from Boston, arrived at Liverpool at midnight on Wednesday the 26th ult., and the Collins steamship Baltic, from New York, at 7 A.M, on Friday, the 28th ult. Tkere is no news of the missing steamship Pacific. The news is three days later than that recerved by the Washington, but presents no feature of decided im- portance. ‘The difficulties alleged to have presented themse:ves in the Paris Conferences just prior to the Washington’s departure, are understood to have been removed, and it was confidently expected that the treaty of peace would be signed within « few days. The London money market waa more stringent. The closing quotation for censols on Friday evening was 923% » 9254. The Liverpool cotton market was quiet, at about the same quotations as were advised by the Asia, although for the ordinary qualities an eagier tone prevailed. The tales during the week, comprising only five business cays, amounted to forty-two thousand bales, of which some twelve thousand were taken by exporters and spesulators. In breadstuffs there had been « general decline trom the pices of the previous Friday, more particularly upon the lower dercriptions— the falling off 1n flour being equal to about 1s. per barrel, and in wheat to 3d. per bushel. For fine wheat 4 slight advance had peen established. Corn was dull at the decline advised by the Washington. The provision market was esrentially unchanged. For Jard there was an improved demand, at former rates. THE PEACE CONFERENCES. The Peace Congress met again on Thursday, the 27th ultimo, all the members being present. It is said that the deliberations were important, and it was confidently believed that the treaty of peace would be signed on Saturday, the 20th of March—the day the Cambria sailed, ‘The Paris correspondent of the London News saya the Court tradesmen have been ordered to prepare illumina- tions for Saturday eve: definitely—other papers say Sunday; force wan week; but all agree tha: it will be eariys, Bcd yee iagindly ee ae ee ‘tated that the diplomatic cr of b te remembered tl 5 hat on bled, leg, with he ex: peeet of that terminating te their labors. tt is re. ported that Napoleon fully rupposed thetr business was voneluded, and that he atliced | the guns of the Invalides to announce the conclusion of pence at the same time he 7e Deum was being celebrated for the birth of his (on. ABloody Drama in Monroe Street—Diaboli- cal Attempt at Murder—Arrest of the Ae- cused Party, dic. Yesterday afternoon, about two o’cleck, the neighbor- hood of No. 27 Monroe street waa thrown into » great state of excitement in consequence of an alleged attempt at murder having been made upon the person of a young ‘woman, named Catharine Haltmeyer, her parsmoar, Frederick Webber. The circums!ances attending the case, as far as we could learn, appear to be as follows:— For nearly two years past the woman referred to and the man Webber have been living together as man and wife. Webber, by his dissolute and extravagant course of life, incurred the dire displeasure of Catharine, who aeter- mined to leave him and become the mistress of another man, named Charles Beekman. This act on the parte the woman incensed Webber awfully, and he determi ed, if she did not quit Beekman’s company, to have his revenge. Catharine succesded, however, in necreting herself from the eyes of Webber, and for » time escapedail harm, Yesterday afiermoon, the parameur, finduxg that this woman boarded at No, 27 Momree street, along with Beekman, repaired to her rooms, ané finding her in, demanded $30 from her. * She refused te accede to the demand, when Webber became very indig- nant, and finally, in a great passion, drew from ide pocket @ penknife, and commenced an indiscriminate attack upon the man Beekewsan and the woman Halt- meyer. The former retrea:ed from the room, after hav- ing been cut across the face, but the woman was net so fortunate. Webber, it is alleged, caught her by the hair, and stabbed her im various pisces about the head and neck, until the blood flowed in tor. rents. The pdor. woman succeeded im making her way to the street, when’ an alarm was raised, end chase was given Webber. Officer Prenderghast, of the Fourth ward police, hearing of the oscurrente, hastened to the scene, when he me: Webber and took him inte custody, Dr. James R, Wood, who was attending a patient in the neignborhood, was notified of the ocomr- rence, ani proceeding to the spot, did all in his power to alleviate the sufferings of the wounded woman. Upom an examination it was found thet the jugular vein and earoud arteries had been cut, and thet the life of tme unforiunate creaiure wasin imminent danger. Accerd- ingly Ccroner Gamble was notitied of the perilous condition of the woman, and preparations were made by this official to have an ante mortem examination taken. The dying woman being intormed tuat her case was hope- lees, Was requested to make a cying declaration ia re- gerd to the facis of the case. ‘Che ususi form having nage ne through with, the woman’s affidavit wae taken, a8 follows:— THE ANTE MORTEM EXAMINATION, Catherine Haltmeyer, reriaiog at 27 Monroe being examined, says: I lived with Frederick Webber for twenty months, and 1 supported him all that time, | live wow with Mr. Charles Beeman; this ft about’ noom, Webber came .nto my room, on the third story, rear 2% Mionroe street. and asked me to give him toir:y dollara; 1 tole him I did not have any money; he shen grabbsd hold of me. and said he rhould have the money; hy had aa open knife in bis hand; it was a pocket knife; he cut me on the neck with the knife; he ran cown stairs ai atter him into the grocery store; he also attacked a.
