Mr. Isidor Mobr, a friend | ef the Levis, took the letter to the Governor. A letter from Mr, Mohr corroborates this statement in al) |, Ste details, The suit seems to have been originated by a lawyer, without the consent of the parties most inte- wemted, ‘Mies Keene presented @ new five act play on Monday might, under the above title. It is the work of Tom Taylor amd Charles Reade. It wes first produced at the opening of the Saint James’ theatre, London, about two years minee, when Mr. G. Vandenhoff, Mrs. Seymour, Miss Glynn and Mr. T. Mead sustained the principal parts. It ‘bas also been piayed at the Boston theatre and im Cali- fornia, It was-cast at the Broadway last season, for the benefit of the Misres Goughenheim, but never acted. The seene is laid in England, during the reign of Charles the Beeond, and the plot illustrates the loves of the Dake of ‘Bishmend and Frances Stewart (Ia belieStewart.) Rich. mond is on the seas pitching into the Datch, and eomning home he finds the King in love with the Stewart. & grand row ensues between the lovers, Richmond get- ting full of patriotism and claret, (queer, for that Dake— ‘the patriotism, not the claret,) afiixes his autograph to some treasonable papers tendered by « fifth monarchy man, Major Wildman, and does several more things tend- ig toenrage the other Stewart. After a great deal more ‘talk than there is any necessity for, Nell Gwyn, the ac- ‘wees, steps in and makes s treaty of peace all round: ‘The play seems to have been written for the purpose of @ontrasting two types of female character aa seen in the Selly, rollicking, laughing actrese, and the haughty and fMigid court beauty. This part of it is very nicely done, Dut there is not enough of it for more than three asts. ‘It will be seen that the authors have taken some Mhertice with the Muse of History—a lady who must be ‘mre to that sort of thing by this time, however. The Plot of this play is too much elaboxated, and it sometimes ‘Decomes tedious, for the reason that one has no Late Snterest in or sympathy with any of the characters, unti ‘Mistress Gwyn begins to diplomatize between Richmond and his Jove. The arch and sprightly manner in which ‘Mins Keene gave these scenes was, traly refreshing; but ene should not be obliged to wait so long for it. This ‘was the more apparent, as most of the actors failed to sive that light and gay spirit to the scene which the posh requires. The King (Mr. Dickinson) was infected with « mild melancholy, which, however pleasant and interesting it may be at times, was deci- @edly out of place in this part. There was none ef that courtly recklessness, that exquisite urbanity, that never ceasing flow of spirits, which made Charles the idol of his people, while they knew that he was hum- Dogging them in the most awful manner. My Lord Buckhurst (Mr. Coandler) should have been @ court Dutterfly, # gallant, who, if he had lived in our day, ‘would have made the most extraordinary waistcoats, the tightest of trousers, and had the nattiest of terriers and the fastest of trotting horses. But Mr. Chandler made ‘him a commonplace person, not at all fascinating either im dress or manner. Mr. Jordan was very good in Rich- mond, and he delivered the excellent speech to the memory of Cromweli very finely. La Belle Stewart was aeted by Mizs Reignolds. It was an uneven performance, lacking vigor and finish, but still good in parts, Miss Reignolds improves. If she will give this part more dignity, and induige less in mock heroics, she will find her account with the audience. ‘The play seems to have been written chiefly to display Nell Gwyn, in a favorable light. The biographers have Gealt lightly with Nelly, whose vices seem to have been rather the result of bad company than a bad hed. She ‘was a sad rogue, however, notwithstanding what they many say about her; and her idea of ‘sport’? was some- thing of the roughest. Miss Keene gave us a nicely @olored picture, sobering down the stronger tints, and sending the people away with a very favorable opinion of “poor Nelly,” as her royal master called her. If there ‘was apy fault about Miss Keene’s acting, it was that she refined the character a little too much. It was highly @lished by the audience, and must be classed among her most successful efforts, Miss Keene never looked pret- fer, and her costumes were exceedingly rich, tasteful ‘and correct. I Nell had stepced out of her frame at Hampton Court Gallery it could not have been more ‘watural. Mr. Rea played Major Wildman with much uno- and Fithough at times it was a@ little too ’intense, yet on the whole it was quite rey done. epys—the unfortunate Samuel—is bur- by the author, and Mr. Johnston wisely con eluded to make him funny, andsave him from y, a8 a whole, is quite interestin ig. weeds the nc sors, however, and wiil undoubtedly Pe Sere house was full’ and the peopie apparently oat Court Calendar—This Day.
