2 FINANCIAL AND COMMEREIAL MONEY MARKEE. ‘Tompay, April 1-6 P. M. ‘There was a little more life in the stook market to-day. ‘Shore were larger operations in al! the leading stocks, ‘and a pretty general improvement was realized. Nicara- gma Transit advanced 4 per cent; Erie Railroad, 4; Readizg, {; Hudson Railroad, %; Galeaa and Chicago, 44; Cleveland and Toledo, , There was more inquiry for Micaragua Transit. It opened at 18% and closed at 133¢ stock rather than pey !t. The cencern is now under New York management. The’ stook will not sell for any- thing. The anzexed statement exhibits the growth of cotton in the United States in each o! the past twenty-one yeartin Cortoy Crors or THs UnrreD STATES. Bales. 1846 and ’i6, 1840 aud "47. 1947 and 748, 1848 anc 4 1849 and ’6 1850 aad ’o, Bales. percent. Erie appears to be gradually improving under 18c1 acd 79: the influence of the recent report. There are, however, be and 1. Plenty of sellers on time at the slight advance, So long 1854 and °56. 2 8 ra!Iroad company continues to spend money in large amounts, so long the stock must rema'n depressed, The expenditures may appear judicious and they may add Jarge!y to the business snd income of the company, but 1844 and °45. ‘The consumption of cotton in this country in each of the past filteen years, accord’ng to returns made from the ports, exclusive of the inland consumption, was as # does not follow that they add anything to the | soiows:— met income, to that fund from which dividends, ConsvMrtion oF Corton iN THE Unrrep Stars. i paid, must be drawn. The proposed expendi- p tures in Jersey are undoudtedly required, bu ited “41 isp aad MA ‘they msy not prove profitable. The Erie Company will not meke the outlay at tbat point directly, bat it will do more or worse—it will guarantee six or even per cent on the expenditure, without deriving any benefit from whatever improvement may be realized in ‘the value of property. It merely leases the lan4, buili- ‘tinge, docks, &c.,f or a» term of years at a certain price, dividuals making the expenditure having the sole bene tofany enhancement of value the termination of the voad at that poiat may ultimately cause. The company probably could not avoid this difficulty, but it dees not weaken at all the point at issue. A large amount must be indireetly assumed for these improvements, and that ability aust be provided for before the stockholders can @erive any beneiit from their investment. It ia placing mother annual payment of about one hundred and fifty ‘thousand dollars between the stock ho'ders anda dividend, We therefore repeat, that so long as the company’s lia- Diisies are annually Increasing at the rate ot one to two millions of dollars, the stock cannot improve much in market value. The report jnut issued is an able @oeur ent, and does great credit to Mr. McCallum, the e@ompany’s superintegient, Every stockholder can now thorovgtly post himself mm regard to this property. We heave, for the first time, been able by this report to get = Proper insight into the affairs of the Erie Railroad Com- peoy; ard ifsuch exhibits are made annually, no one ‘moed hereafter plead igaorance of the company's condi- tion. ‘What makes this report partioularly valuable, ani Ste statements of ro much importance, is the cast iron onesty and independence of the company’s superinten- dent. The whole manrgement ia of a superior character, apd every man, fiem the President dowo, mesas to do Jast what fs right. Every confidence can therefore be placed ic the figure: and e2nclusions drawn from them fm the report. I* is only lately that we have been adie to may this much of the E.ie Railroad Company, and we wih we could now say as much, with equal truth, of the Mew York Central. That company wants a McUal- 1817 and "48. The quantity taken from the receiving porta by manu- tacturers is called the consumption. The amount in their hands on the 3lst of August, in each year, is gov- rned by the prospecta of the next crop, the state of the money market, &e., &c. This being a choap year for money, we can safely put dewn the consumption of the United States at 700,000 bales. This is undoubted- ly extravagant, but we would rather be over than under the mark. We also estimate an increare in Russia of 50,000 bales, increase in France 75,000, inerease in other parts of Enrope 75,000 bales--tetal, 200,000 bales --which, added to the increase in the United States, makes an ng- gregate of 300,000 bales, All over this Great Butain will get at her own price, for there 1s no other competitor in the field. We cannot hold ths surplus on this side of the Atiantic. We have not expital to spare for that purpose, and there is no alternative but to put it into the ports of Great Briain, aponsuch terms as the capitalists and man- ufacturers of that country may determinine, In the event of a speculative moveieat in cotton opening up ia England, upon the declaration of peace, we may look for prices being sustained, but without some such influence the large supp'ies of the raw material waust have an un- favorable effect on the market value. The estimates ail point toa large crop. The figures range from 3,300,000 to 8,600,000 bales. The iargest crop ever raised waa in 1852 and 1853, when it exceeded thiee and s quarter mil- lions of bales. Stock Exchange.
