ALLEGED EMBEZZLEMENT BY A CONFIDENTIAL CLERE —OURIOUS CASE OF REMORSE OF CONSCIENCE. Sergeant Bowyer, of the Chiet’s office, arrived in this eity youterday from Pittsburg, Pa., having in custody a young man named James McGrath, who stands charged wrth havis g embezzled about $3,000 from hia employer, Joba M. Habersham, of No. 13 Broadway. McGrath, it had for some years past been the confidential lerk of the complainant; and being well posted in the affairs of Mr. Habersham, was authorized by him, during the sickness of the latter, to transact all his business. Batire charge of the concern was placed in the custody of Mo@raih, who, it appears, was tempted by the opportu- nity thus afforded to defraud his employer out of » large ameunt ofmorey. On the 29th ot February last, while ‘Mr. Habersham was confined to his room, McGrath sad- @enly cisappeared, His sbsence at that particular mo- ment caused Mr. Habersham @ great deal of unexsiness. In a few weeks atter his sudden departure, McGrath wrote to bin employer, and, acknowledging his peculations, said he fit extremely sorry tor his misdeeds, and hoped tnat his conduct would not be looked ay harshly. Mr. Habersham immediately wrote to his brother William, in Georgia, and begged him to hasten toNew York and sttend to the affairs of the complain- aut. Upon examixing the books of the complainant it ‘was found that money to the amount of three or four thousand dollars had been embezzled by McGrath. Some days after the receipt of the first letter information oame from the Pittsburg police that McGrath had delivered himeelf up to the authorities In that city and was quite wag ‘be conveyed back to New York for trial. Ser- geant Bowyer was sent atter the fugitive, with the neces- wary documents. This officer arrived here yesterday, and ‘the prisoner was, upon being taken before Justise Os- borne, at the Mayor’s office, committed for examination. Oftieer Fox, of the Pittsburg police, says that McGrath was apparently crazy when he came to the station house, and ‘ined that officerstrom New York were continual: seeking bim with pistols and bowie knives. He seem much gratified when he heard that the authorities there were intent on sonding him to this city.
