Wlinois Central bonds were in demand, and seld largely at an advance. Cumberland Coal was heavy, without any alteration in prices. This stock je sustained by a party anxious to realize. As soon ‘as this party sells out we may look for lower prices— perhaps before. It is a mystery to us how it has been kept up to anything like present prices s0 Yong. Such, however, was not the fact. The absence of operators at the Stock Exchange is the principal cause of the present depression. The Danks will be full of money after the lapse of atfew weeks, when the bulk of the mercautile payments ave ever, aud then we can calculate confidently upon an active aud improving stock market. We musi not look for large receipts in March from any of the Western railroads. All the lines between this and the western end of Lake Erie have had a hard time of it lately. On the 4th inst., that eection of country was visited with the worst snow storm of the sea- 20n, which not only largely reduced their receipts, but increased their expenses to more than double the usual rate. It has been, on the whole, an un- fortunate season .for railroads, and must interfere materially with their dividend funds. We do not believe there iss road east of Lake Michigan that has earned a dollar net since the Ist of January last. The snow and the cold has not only restricted travel, but added heavily to the expenses; and those co" panies which have not actually lost money the past winter, may consider themselves fortunate. Francis Leland, Esq., has been appointed Presi dent of the New York County Bank, in place of Chas. A. Macy, Exq., who has been elected cashier of the Park Bank. Mr. Leland is one of oar mos saccessful merchants, and will prove a valuable ac- quisition to the instivution of which he is now the head. The steamship Arabia, at Halifax from Liver- pool, brings ceven days later intelligence. The news is in uo way important. Politically there has been no change. The Pearce Conference was progressing secretly. Stock speculators on this side of the’Atlantic must be prepared for the most start- ling reports. We shall have an abundance ot them before the conference terminates. They will all be ut forth for stockjobbing purposes, either to favor the bull or bear interest. Consols had advanced a fraction. The closing quotations were 91} a 91} per cent. By the previous steamer 91 por cent was the extreme quotation. The demand for money con- tinued active at full rates. Cotton was without change, with a dullmarket. Breadstuffs were lowe:+ The Atlas Mutual Marine Insurance Company has failed, and we understand it will be a bad one. The Sompeny has been embarrassed for some time. Last December it obtained help to the amount of $300,060 from certain parties, in the shape of notes, with the hope of being able to work through, but the dirastrous etorm of January 5 placed the com- pany beyond all redemption. The steamship Northern Light, from Nicaragua, is about due at this port, with two weeks later news from California and the usual se: monthly remittance of gold. The Park Bank has called in the final instalment of ninety per cent on its capital. It is payable on the 31st inst. The bank will commence business on the Ist of April. The Phenix Fire Insurance Company have de- clared a semi-annual dividend of ten per cent; the Minnesota Copper Miaing Company, ten dollars pershare, payable one-half June 1, and one-half Bept. 1.
