The ceftendant was impudent enovgh to ark the Court to believs that the Brandon register was a forgery. and yet he eontd not deiga to bring » single witness from his own family to set the matter at rest. To naturalize an alien at the time when Matscll came over, three thing: were necessary: he must make 6 ceport of himself, a de claration of intentions to become 4 citizen und obiatn certificstes of both these. He must prove that be is « good citizen, of good moral character, that he hes been ib this country five yesrs, and he must prove this by a citizen anc no? by an alien, and all these papers must be reoorde® at .ength, or the whole proceeding ta taval'd, Mr, Macell was bound to produce proof of baving taken ali these ste;s, but he hai rot proved one single tuing of ali these, Mr. Noyes contended that the record was mu tila'ed by & me oxe in the interest of the cefendantr that just encugn was removed to preclace some fatal «bjre- tions to its regularity, while enough was ieft to induce the presumpticn that it wae a regular naturalization. Mr. Bracy replied to the argument against the suff- ciency of the record, and eluciouted some cazeé which ho bad be‘ore cited.
