Arrival of the Steam Frigate Powhatan. OUR NAVAL COBRESPONDEt CE. Unrrep States I’'nic.ts PownAtAN, Nenvorx, Va., Fed. 14, 1856. Cruise of the U.S. Steamship Powhatan in the Waters of China and Japan—Her Duty During Three Years —Her Immense Spced—-Captain McCluney’s Trestty with the Sultan BorneoArrival of the ship in China—Journzy to Japan—Portuguese Bigary Corrected—Trip to the Fel- low Seam A Lool: at the Manchow Turtars—Relicf ts the Russians in Japan—The Batlle with Chinese Pirales— Number Slain by the Powhatan—Mortuiliiy; un Board. ‘Thinking that it may be of some Laterest t> your read ers to hear something of the whereabouts of this fine stoamer,I scratch you few hasty lines, giving a brief review of her performance durivg » three years’ cruise in China end Japan waters. The Powhstaa left Norfolk on the 1th of February, 1863, to join Commodore Perry's Japan expedition. With @ fine crew of men and well officored, she startod full of hope and anticipation. A fine run of Afteen days enabled her to reach Madeira, where, coating with despatch, she proceeded under sail alone, with buckets off the wheels, to within a few hundred miles of St. Helena. A fair op- portunity was thus given to try the capacity of the ship, Doth ana rieamer and eae sailcr; atid it may beas well in this place to say that she has proved herseif in both une- <ualled, and beyond all reprcgen aso failure. She is, perbeps, the must perfost war steamor in tho world. Speeding under a consumption of forty tons of coal per day, at the rate of cloven kno's, she has frequently ran 270 miles with that fue); and sailing with a drag of wheel arms, im moderate winda, say at force of cight knots, she has mad the run from Cina in ——— days, twenty of which were under eail with only light trades avera- ging at a force of 3. From St, Helena to Cape Town, Mauritius, Singapore snd thence to Labuan, in Borneo, where a treaty of com- merce was made by Captain McCluney with the Sultan of that empire, xo quietly did she perform her work, that the 26th of July saw her anchored in China water in eighty-four ruaning days from the United States, a great- er paxt of the way against strong head winds. Fioding Commodore Porry had salied for Japan some wocks before, she imnmdiately left to joinhim, Procecd- ing as far as the 100-Choo Ielands, and sscertaining thet the Commodore was upon his return from bis first and short visit, eho returned to Hong Kong. The inierval between the sailiug ot the whole foree which was gradually concentrating near Macao was spent in attending to those duties which are so peculiar to the wants of our commerce in Coins, ard which our mer- chants are wore imperative in cemancing there than elsewhere on the globe. On the 11th January, 1864, the squadron sailed by divi- sions for the Loo Chooa and Japan. The movements of that squadron are #o well known, that 1t would be useless to relate them step by step. Suilice it for the public to ‘know that the Yowhatan bore her full share in all the operations, Some changes being mede, she became the flag sbip, end from hsr decks and cabin emanated all actions which ‘inally concluded in the treaty of Kanna- gu > ‘pon the v1.hdrawal of the squadron from Japan the Powhatan visited all the porta in China. At Ningps, finding that the actions of a Portuguese lman-of-war—iho Don Juan—bad se.foualy affected tho safety end interests of the American miesionary resi- ts, Captain McClunsy promp'ly despatched an armod expedition to demand redress and a forbearance from such actiona fn future. This was promptly accorded. Upon the wrrival of the Powhaten at ong Kong, she was laced at the disposal and orders of Mr. McLane, Untied tes Comr:issioner. After convoying Lim from place to piace aw only great men shouid ve conveyed, a visit, in ompany with SirJoha Bowring, Governor of Hong Kong, KXc., to the mou h « the Pei-ho, near Pekin, was project- 4. The month of October saw the Powhutan im the joal waters of the Yellow sea, awaiting the diplomatic tion which all the world knows fade, In thie almost known and never visited sea, the Powhatan was the rst American man-of-war to drop her anchors at tho foot of the ‘great wall."’ Hor boa’s entered that bar- jered river which runs by Pekin, and her crews looked pen the great canal and saw, for the first time, the lanchow Tertars, giving a very diffrent ides of Chins id the Chinese than wnat ono gathers from the river at of Canton. MONEX MARKET. Mowpar, Feb. 18—6 P. M. ‘The news from Enrope via Halifax has not pr '- duced any material change in prices. Tho market this morning was moderately active, and quotations were wel! sustained. At the first board Harlem ad- vanced 1 per cent; Hudson River Railroad, }; Michi- gan Southern, $; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 4; Cleve- land and Toledo, }. Nicaragua Traasit declined $ er cent; Cumberland, 4; New York Central Rail- road, {; Erie, 4; Reading, 3. Erie was the principal attraction to-day. We understand that the old oom- bination has passed away, and that a new party is in the field. A very large quantity of stock has been thrown vpon the market within the past ten days, and it is reported that there is afloat in the etreet between thirty and forty thousand shares. In the face of thia supply the price is well sustained. Michigan Southern opened and closed firm, at a slight advance. Some of the leading stock receded a fraction or so at the first board but there was nothing of consequence pressing for tale, Milwaukie aud Mississippi were in demand, and scme small sales were made at Saturday's pri- oes. Galena and Chicago sold to the extent of one hundred and twenty-two shares, in amall lots of tea and fifteen each. The market price of ‘his stock is firmiy sustained. Nicaragua Transit is one of the heavies stocks on the list. We notice daily trans actions at sixty days, buyer’s option, and it looks as though tho partica purchasing were preparing a trap for the shorta. Cumberland Coal has evidently no very strong backers. There were reports, some days since, of a corner, but we sce no evidence of it in the street. New York Central Railroad is too big a toad to carry at present prices. In the event of a reaction in the market generally, this stock will probably feel it first of all, and perhaps to a greater extent than any other dividend paying railroad stock on the list. Railroad bonds are gradually, bat steadily, appreciating in market value. Galena and Chicago first mortgare bonds sold at 99 per cent; Terre Haute aud Acton second mortgage bends at 75 per cent. After the adjournment of the Loard the following sales of bonds and stocks were made at auction by A.H. Nicol: $19 600 Con New Jersey RE Ist m 6,000 Lackewona & West. BR RR. E civ. {chmond RR rt. At the s2coad b d the market was not co baoyent nor 60 active. Cumberland feil off 4 per gua Transit, There were moderate ding stocks, without change in prices, bot the tendency ai the close was downwanl. CGa- lena abd Chicago was sold more freely this afternoon at the morning’s prices, The eales of the Nicaragua Traneit, seller four months, are well known to be ade on account of & purty recently connected with the xoanegement of the company. It would be weil for the preeut board of directors to revise the San Francisco agency. Operators in the stock market ore not satisfied with the telegraphic accounts from Haiifox of the steamer Cunada’s newe, and prefer waiting the arrival of the mails and private leiters. ‘The advices, as far as received, are calculated to create a pause in the upward movement of stocks.
