FUNANGIAL AND COMMERCIAL. | The abseace of specie exports from this port last week places the importations more in excess than usual. The detaila of importations and exporta tions during the week were as follows:— Commmnce oy tum Port op New Yora. IMPORTATIONS OTHBR THAN DEY GOODS. Phy. Value. MOEBY MARKET. Sunpay, Feb. 17—6 P. M. ‘The stock market yesterday closed buoyant. There (was an active demand for all railroad securities, and holders were firm at our closing quotations. The money market is decidedly in favor of a very active @peculative movement. The brokers are full of Beans, and outsiders full of confidence. Specula- tors for a rise believe that, in view of our great do- tmeetio prosperity, of our great internal resources, ‘and of our future position, stock securities generally, ‘and railroad bonds and stocks particalarly, rule at prices presenting sufficient attractions for outsiders, and that they will without doubt, when the season is farther advanced, when the weather is more favor- able and navigation unobstructed, when all kinds of business is more active, and activity takes the Place of inaction, enter the market as purchasers, and give @ great impetus to prices. We have during the past four months been accumulating gold. Nearly the aggregate of our receipts of California gold in that time has been re- tained within our own limits. We have pro- bably added to our specie basis, since the exporta- ion of bullion ceased, from fifteen to twenty mil" lions of dollars. But a smal! portion of that amount bas gone into the banks. It has been disposed of in @ much better way. It has gone into general circu- lation, and served materially to improve the circula- ting medium of the country. It has enlarged the basis of private credits, and given an impetus to in. dustry of a substantial and healthy character. Our internal condition is on the whole very flattering in very particular, and we see at present no good rea- gon why we should not realize a degree of prosperity during the present year’ equal to, if not greater, than ever before known. No fears need be entertained, in our opinion, in regard to future shipments of spe- cie. Under the most active demand for exportation we have never exceeded our receipts from Califor- nia; and in the event of a resumption of shipments, our imports will keep our present supply food. The fact that we have within the past Mr months added to our stock of precious metals between fifteen and twenty millions of dollars, should strengthen public confidence in the operations of our financial system. The people at largeare rich. The farmer has received enormous prices for his large surplus, the mechanic finds full employment at re- Mmunerative prices, the merchant cannot complain of the extent of his sales, the amount of his profits or of the punctuality of paymenta. All of our works of in- ternal improvement show large receipts, and aze likely to pay better than heretofore. All these things point to good times, and it would be folly to attempt to resist the current, which is now setting so strong- ly towardsa general appreciation in every species of property. A few weeks willfree external naviga- tion from obstructions and extraordinary delays and dangers, and open our internal water communica- tions; a few weeks will bring us mild and pleasant weather, when all will fee) like engaging in some new enterprise, or entering into some new field of speculation; then we may look for one of these ac- tive and exciting periods which have heretofore tended to such rapid developements in our internal resources, and which has given us, in comparatively a few years, the wealth and strength of the oldest nation of the old world. The Tribune gives the following version of the affair we alluded to a few days since:— ‘The facta of the so calied failure we understand to be Simply that @ corner having been made in Southern igen stock, Mr. Jacob Little cid not, on one or two days of this week, cetiver the stock called from him, not willirg to pay the advanced price askei by those who beki the cash stock. The party to whom the stock was going, Mr. Leonara W. Jerome, had, we understand, mo itiom to press Mr. Listle; and, we presume, had he done 60, that gentieman would have Able amount of difference. The matter simply in Mr. Little’s taxing the resoonsibility of not delivering atock which could not be obtained excepting advance, while the correr was perfect, wi'hout, how. ever, attemptirg to evade bis eventual lisbliity. ‘In the case of a weak party, thix might jartly be considered & jeilure; but in this case, where no one could ques:ion the abi.ity to meet any contract, the matter assumes a dif. ferent aspect. No one doubted for a moment the ability of Mr. Little to pay any difference in prices, but that was not the point at issue. The stock was not forth coming at the time it was due, and all the quibbling in the world cannot alter that fact. The big fish of Wali street should be kept to their contracts as well as the little ones, or the broker's occupation’s ‘Albert H. Nicolay’s regular semi-weekly auction Bale of stocks and bonds will take place on Monday pext, the 15th ¢nst., at 124 o'clock, at the Merchanta Exohange, The act authorizing the New York and Erie Rail-’ road to construct their track through Bergen Hill to their contemplated new depot site on the Hudson Fiver, passed the New Jersey Assembly yesterday, without a dissenting vote.
