6 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEX MARKET. Parmar, Feb. 8—6 P. M. ‘The stock market was all in favor of holders and prmchasers for a rise this morning. There were very Jarge transactions in all the leading securities, and | ‘& speculative spirit of considerable force was appa- rent from the opening. At the fit board Illinois Central’ bonds advanced } per cent; Nicaragua ‘Transit, {; New York Centra! ailroad, 1; Erie, }; Hudson Railroad, }; Michigan Central, “3s Michigan Southern, 1}; Cleveland and Toledo, 3; Chicago and Rock Island, 1}; Milwaukie and Mis- siesippi;1. Galena and Chicago fell off $ per cent; ‘PMiaienri 6's, |. Erie, Reaaing and Michigan South- “gem were the leading cards, ticdlarly the latter. Southern has not been so,active fF many years, if ever before. The salea at the first-board to- @ay samap two thousand shares, The rise in this @teck,within the past ten days, is considered by dear speculators very great, but the current price ia: ‘nothing ‘compared with that which has ruled with: ‘the past twelve mouths. Last August and Sep- tember ‘the current market value was 104 a 105 per cent and we sve no reason why it should not touch these points again. Then it wes but a ten per cent stock. Now itis at least a twelve per cent investment at par. Buring the present fiscal year this company will de- rive a revenue from sources which, aix months ago, were almost unknown The opening of the line of read through Pennsylvania, connecting this city ‘with the West via Harrisburg, Pittsborg, Cleveland, Toledo, &o., makes the Michigan Soutuern a link in the great chain of roads from the Atlantic to the Westerndakes. The great Southern ronte, avoiding the high latitudes of the New York Central, must, @ming the winter months, command the bulk of 4ravel and traffic, particularly the transportation of c&ttle. The dangers and delays experienced the present winter must turn the attention of travellers and ehippers to the Southern route, and attract, for & portion of the year at least, a lurge portion of the through business. These movements all point toa great increase of traffic on the Michigan Southern Toad, and to @ very large increase in its reve- nee. Travel and trade passing East or West Dust be drawn to this road as a sort of trumk line, the diverging points from which will be Toledo and Detroit at the east, and Chicago at the west end of the line. It is these advantages of position that have attracted the at- tention of some of our strongest and shrewdest | capitalists, aud induced them to parchase to the ex tent exhibited by the daily sales at the stock board. Wyie was quite active to-day. It closed firm at oar quotations. Reading is gradually working up to the oid point, dividend on. Galena and Chicago fiuctuated considerably to-day. A very large quan- tity of stock was forced upon the market, both at and between the boards. New York Central Rail- road sold freely this morning. We understand that sales of this stock have been made to some extent within the past few days for the purpose of invest- ing the procceds in Michigan Southern, and that the proceeds of dividends in New York Central have been invested in the same way. This looks as though the right kind @ men were buying Michi gan Southern. At the second board the market was all up. Specalation has become quite active, and there is a strong movement in all the leading securi ies. Cumberland went up } percent; Nicaragua, }; New York Gentral, }; Michigan Southern, 1; Galena and Chicago, j; Ulinois Central bonds, j. Erie closed steady. The market closed firm, with an upward ‘tendency. The bears will find it uphill work to stem the current now setting tuwaras higher prices. Money is abundant, and likely to continue so. The country is fall of capital, and we look for the absorp" tion of a vast amount of sto:ks, and their withdraw- al from market. ‘The earnings of the Minois Centra! Railroad Com- pany .for January, 1856, amounted to $135,000, against $57,000 for the same month last year, show" ing an increase of $78,000, equal to one hundred and thirty per cent. The land sales figure up $175,. 000, averaging upwards of $15 per acre. The Pre sident-of the company has introdnced a new sye tem. the sales of land, which must be attended with the best results. Its advantages will soon be seen in the land sales of the company and in the revenue of the road. The road is ia the hands of a clase of men vastly superior to those who managed its affairs in its early history, and the final result of its land operations will astonish the financiers of ‘both the Cid and New World. The Assistant Treasurer reports to-day as fol- lows :— Paid on Treseury aczount. From Customs, ‘The Brooklyn and Jamaica Railroad has declared semi-annual dividend of four per cent; the Loril- Jard Fire Insurance Company a semi-annnal dividend of five per cent; the City Bank of Hartford, Ct., five dollars per share. The Haslem Railroad Company eared in Decem- ber, 1966, $91,182 37, of which $41,639 19 was from passengers; $34,739 66 from freight, and the balance from miscellaneous sources The report of the New Orleans banks for the week ending Jan. 26, shows an increase in specie of $381 620; in circulation, $155,595; ia loans, $373 397, and a decrease in deposits of $68,872, compared with the returns of the previous week. We learn there ‘are 720 subscribers to the capital stock of the Park Bank, nearly all of whom signed the articles of association on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week, at the City Bank. Those who have not signed will find the books of subscrip- tion all day Saturday, the 9th, at the counting room of Messrs. Howes, Hyatt & Co., 63 Murray street. ‘The architects—Messrs. T. Thomas & Sons—are now constructing the banking rooms in the building, (late Glinton Hotel), at the head of Beekman street, opposite the Park, which it is expected will be com- pleted om or before the first of April. Since the Park Bank. purchased this building events have that must add largely to the value of the property.and to the importance of the position. ‘There is now very little doubt but that the Post Office will, sooner or later, be on the site of the old NEW YORK HERALD, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1856. The interior merchants are not yet supplied with fall assortments of goods for the spring trade, and .where purchases have been made much, | delay has been experienced in forwarding them. Intercourse by steamers with the east through Long Island Sound, has been suspended, and goods have accumulated at both ends of the steamboat routes—th ee here waiting shipment, while produce and meanuiactures are waiting for shipment to the city. Phe bank was fortanate in ne. | PArt# of the country. The anction sales daring the past week have also been affected by the weather, and sales have been made on rather a limited scale, The advance in cotton of jc.a per pound, if main- tained, will benefit Southern merchants, and not only make collections from that quarter easier, but lead to increased conanmption and consequerit demand for dry goods. A half cent per pound on cotton on one and « half millions of bales in the country, would make a difference in favor of the United States of $3,000,000. Meat still continues very high, owing in part to the de- tention of the railroad trains; but that will not acesant for the inordinate prices that now prevail. They are not unprecedented atthe New York market, it is true, but while there was @ show of reason for dear rates last year, in consequence of the short grass orop of the previous summer, this year no such cause exists, denlors charge retail dealers too much i proven by the fact that when ealled upon to aupply hotels und the pud- Ke institutions their rates are very reasonabie. Tue following table shows the prices the Commissioners of That wholesa'e | Emigration egreed to pay their contractors for the year, some dayw sine, and also the prices retailers pay:— Yet the contract or at these rates expects, and no doubt wil, wake a good deal of money. Pouliry aud game is also high, with no prospect of re. duction. Bear’s meat is gétting scarce; venison is siili penty and really the cheapest meat in market, Fish is bigh, owing to the difficulty experienced by fishermen in pursuit of thelr calling.
